TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema Music 20Gudalur Narayanaswami Balasubramaniam was born on

January 6, 1910.His father G. V. Narayanaswami Iyer, the popular Head-

master of Hindu High School, Triplicane, was a type-castTanjorean to the hilt. Music ran in the veins of Iyer and he wason first-name basis and intimacy with the legendary musicalstalwarts of the day Tirukodikaval Krishna Iyer (the violinwizard and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer’s uncle), ThirumarugalNatesa Pillai (the great nagaswaram-exponent T. N.Rajaratnam Pillai’s uncle), Palladam Sanjeeva Rao (the famedflautist), and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, the greatest Ro-man of them all. They frequently visited him at his home inMadras and often sang there. No wonder that music enteredthe soul, sinews and skin of the young lad, Balu.

“Right from my birth I lived in an atmosphere drenched inmusic and this helped to nurture, develop and sustain myardour in music”, GNB wrote later.

Blessed with handsome looks, charm and a malleable melo-dious voice, GNB received encouragement in music from hislearned father. And he did well in his studies too and secured hisB. A. (Hons.) degree in English Literature in 1930.

Like most middle-class Brahmins of the day, his fatherwished that his son should become a lawyer and move to LuzChurch Road, Mylapore where top lawyers lived in theirbungalows and garden houses! But GNB had already made uphis mind to be a professional performing musician.

Indeed he took his bow in 1928 by singing at theKapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore. It was a raving debut. Hehad received training under the noted violinist KarurChinnaswami Iyer and Madurai Subramania Iyer, bothneighbours in Triplicane. Besides formal training, he hadimbibed by sheer mental osmosis by listening to the greatlegends like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer.

Soon his fame began to fan out fast and ere long he was amuch-sought-after performer. His style of singing found in-creasing favour with music lovers and a ‘GNB-bani’ emerged. And, lo, GNB, the legend was born …..

Not surprisingly Tamil cinema spread out the red carpet tothe resplendent rising star and a Coimbatore-based film pro-ducer, A. N. Maruthachalam Chettiar first signed GNB for hismovie. Affectionately known as ‘Chellam’, he had promoted afilm company, ‘Chellam Talkies’ in association with his palslike the textile mill owner and moneybag of Kovai, P. S.Sathappa Chettiar. Its first venture was ‘ Bhama Vijayam’ ,a mythological about Lord Krishna, Sathyabhama andRukmini.

To direct the movie, the Hollywood-trained filmmaker ManikLal Tandon was engaged and, since he knew no Tamil, theCoimbatore-lawyer- turned-filmmaker C. K. Sachi was broughtin to assist him. Popular stage stars P. S. Ratna Bai, P. S.Saraswathi Bai (known as ‘Palayamkottah Sisters’ or ‘BaiSisters’) and M.R. Krishnamurthy were fixed to play Rukmini,Sathyabhama and Krishna respectively. (Krishnamurthi wasMaharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer’s younger brother and notedstage and screen star of his day.)

It was to play as Sage Narada that GNB was brought in. Hewas described in the posters, hand-bills and song books of‘Bhama Vijayam’ as ‘Hutchins Gramophone Plate FameSangeetha Vidwan’ as he was the first recognized Carnaticmusician to act in cinema. (Hutchins was a gramophonerecord producing company of yesteryears which had on its rollsprominent artistes to sing for it. Gramophone records werethen colloquially called ‘plates’.)

‘Bhama Vijayam’, produced at a cost of Rs. 80,000, collectedover Rs. 10 lakhs at the box office, an incredible megabuck inthe 1930s! Like most Tamil films of the day, it too had as manyas 59 songs! GNB sang eight of them in the classic ragasAtana, Sahana, Sindhu Bhairavi, Thodi, Senjurutti,Yadukulakambhodhi, Hindolam and Hamsanandhi. Interest-ingly Narada sang ‘Balakanakamaya’ in raga Atana and ‘ Kotinadhulu in raga Thodi, compositions of Saint ThyagarajaSwamigal, as duets with Lord Krishna! That was not all. In theend, all characters in the movie sang in chorus ‘Jana GanaMana’! Anachronism? Maybe, but nobody cared a damn.Surely those were the days! (To be continued)

CMDA lists commercial buildings failingfire safety norms

Sir, As per the directive of the Madras High Court, CMDA hasreleased the list of commercial buildings which have not complied withfire safety norms including many commercial complexes in the T.Nagar shopping area.

Considering that the CMDA is vested with powers to act and is thesole enforcement authority, it cannot abdicate its responsibility by justreleasing the list. This assumes importance in view of the fact that theDepartment of Fire and Rescue Department does not have power toact against violators. While it was made mandatory for building ownersto obtain certificates from the Fire Department, for reasons bestknown to the authority, it dispensed with the same. As a result of this, commercial buildings came up without proper safety norms. It mustbe pointed out that merely putting up the fire safety mechanisms doesnot in any way help ease the situation.

The Fire Department must conduct regular mock drills to find out theefficacy of the systems installed in buildings. Also, the otheraspect of rescuing people in case of fire accidents needs to be high-lighted.

With no setbacks and emergency exits in the buildings, how will thedepartment rescue persons locked up in a building that catches a majorfire? With no ventilation provided, many could die of suffocation.

One does not understand why the authorities do not pay attention tosuch aspects considering the dangers these buildings pose to thegeneral public and also the residents. T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Elders! Be wary of conmen!Sir, I would like to narrate an unpleasant incident that happened to

me a fortnight back outside Jeeva Park, T. Nagar. After my evening walk, as I left the park, an autorickshaw driver

approached me with some 100-rupee notes in his hand and requestedme to exchange them for a 500-rupee note. I got a little wary and askedhim why and he instantly replied that he was attending a marriage andwanted to present a 500-hundred rupee note.

Without another thought and finding the reply convincing, I gave hima 500 rupee note in exchange for five 100-rupee notes. He pretended tothank me and turned to leave, but suddenly raised his voice and flasheda 100 rupee note and told me that I had by mistake given him that noteinstead of a 500-rupee note.

I realised that he had deliberately picked a senior citizen walkingalone knowing that it is easy to trick and getaway with an old man. AsI was helpless, I took his 100-rupee note and gave him another 500-hundred rupee note resulting in my losing four hundred rupees.

I saw him in Mylapore on Aug. 20, but he managed to get away onrecognizing me. I could not note the auto’s registration number on bothoccasions.

I advise senior citizens walking alone to be alert and not to interactwhen accosted by such conmen. They are usually polite and smoothtalking and easily get away with their tricks if one indulges them. H.Nagesh Bhandarkar, Sri Krishna Apartments, 40, 8th Avenue,Ashok Nagar

Sir, There is a spurt in traffic on Raju Street, West Mambalam whichconnects Arya Gowda Road with 5th Avenue, Ashok Nagar.

Many vehicles, driven at breakneck speed, try to overtake oneanother. With the pavements in bad condition, pedestrians are forcedto walk on the road thereby risking their lives. The drivers show scantrespect for pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road.

Added to these problems, most drivers blow their horns withoutreason causing noise pollution. Even heavy vehicles ply through theroad at night giving no respite to the residents of the street.

With no central median or speedbreakers on the road, there is no lanediscipline among drivers as they try to overtake one another puttingthe pedestrian’s life in danger.

Another noise pollution we regularly face is the loud songs played

Noise of speeding vehicles affects Raju Street residents

through speakers and firing of crackers in the night in the name offestivals.

I request the traffic officials to take suitable steps like constructingspeedbreakers or a central median on Raju Street to control speedingvehicles. G. R. Padm-anabhan, 34, GothiGarden, Raju Street,West Mambalam,Ph: 93826 23000email: [email protected]
