Chandan Mehey AS MEDIA STUDIES – Magazine Induction – Student Booklet Cover One (PAGE 1) Why has this particular person been chosen to go on the cover of this magazine? What is the relationship between the person on the cover and the reader? Uma is an actress, films such as Kill Bill. Recently split up with Evan Hawks, something the readers can relate to. Quotes from Uma and her ex; “But we’re so different” and “That’s why your relationship works” She’s dressed on the cover as Sophisticated and not showing any cleavage. What areas of life do they assume the reader is interested in? How do they work to attract readers? They assume the reader is interested in Celebrity gossip, and ‘Fasion/Shopping/Beauty/Helahth/Homes’ is on the footer with a white font which attracts the reader by contrasting (almost anchoring, Uma’s dress). How do they address the reader (directly or indirectly, formal or informal)? They address the reader directly in 2 nd person with headlines such as: Wake up your Make-up That’s why your relationship works The magazine isn’t informal but isn’t that formal too with not too complicated/sophisticated vocabulary, e.g. ‘Fashion’s Hottest Looks’. There isn’t a lot of Colloquial language used. What colours and fonts are used? Why? The magazine uses some bold fonts throughout, because ‘Uma’ is in italics, Serif font (showing sophistication). With ‘Carbs, Sleep & TV’ in black, but still not bold. There is a limited colour palette made up of sophisticated Pink/white/blacks and the audience for Red is Middlebrow-Highbrow. What does the magazine cover promise the reader? Why should they read it? The footer of the bottom of the magazine promises the reader them things already, ‘Fashion’s Hottest Looks’, ‘Ways to lose weight’, ‘colours to buy now’. They still want to read the magazine to find out more about Uma, and her love life because now she’s broken up she is like a normal person, not a celebrity, which we can easily relate to, therefore making us want to read on.

AS MEDIA STUDIES – Magazine Induction – Student Booklet Cover One (PAGE 1) Why has this particular person been chosen to go on the cover of this magazine? They address the reader directly in 2nd person with headlines such as:

• Wake up your Make-up • That’s why your relationship works

The magazine isn’t informal but isn’t that formal too with not too complicated/sophisticated vocabulary, e.g.
