Compass Parent Portal

The Compass Parent Portal is an online portal that allows you to access up-to-date information about

our school and your child’s progress. The portal is accessible via the web and also via the Compass

School Manager App (available for download via the App store on your device). There are many

different features including: Parents will be provided with a secure, personalised login to:

• Add Attendance Notes

• Communicate with your child’s teachers

• Monitor your child’s homework and learning tasks

• View Semester and Progress Reports

• Book Parent Teacher Conferences

• Consent and pay for school events

• Make school fee payments

• Access a News Feed

• Access student timetable and school calendar

Students will be issued with a Compass ID card. The card is used as a library card as well as Public

Transport Victoria identity.

Absences/Attendance

Parents are required to ensure their child attends school and to provide an explanation for their child's

absence from school (in advance where possible). Parents should notify Beaumaris Secondary

College of absences by adding an ‘Attendance Note’ on Compass. If the parent is unable to access

Compass, they should contact the office so that the absence is recorded as a parent approved

absence in Compass.

If a student is absent on a particular day and the school has not been previously notified by a parent, or

the absence is otherwise unexplained, Beaumaris Secondary College will notify parents by SMS.

Beaumaris Secondary College will attempt to contact parents as soon as practicable on the same day

of the unexplained absence, allowing time for the parent to respond. Please refer to our Attendance

policy for more information.

Please note that parents cannot edit or delete approval notes once they have been entered into

Compass – please contact the office if an approval note has been entered in error.

GOAL Group Wellbeing Program

Upon enrolment, each student is assigned to a GOAL Group/Mentor. Your child’s Goal Mentor will be

your first port of call for any academic and/or wellbeing concerns. Our GOAL program cultivates an

environment that supports the physical, social, intellectual and emotional development of every

student. Through this program, GOAL mentors build a community that nurtures and respects

individual differences and talents, creates a safe and supportive environment and celebrates

achievements. The GOAL program focuses on Gratitude, Organisation, Aspirations and Leadership.

The heart of education is the education of the heart and, as such, the very core of a caring school and

morally mindful education is a well-structured and considered wellbeing program that builds student

capacity across all areas. GOAL Mentors are key figures in the delivery of wellbeing programs to

students. Each GOAL Mentor plays an important leadership role in the College. Not only do they

maintain effective communication between students, their learning area teachers and parents, they

also have an integral role in the development of a collaborative culture.

The main focus of a GOAL Mentor is the wellbeing of each student in his or her care. GOAL Mentors

work closely with our Head of Wellbeing to create a structured and supportive wellbeing program. Our

Head of Wellbeing is a school psychologist and can provide further supports and guidance to students

and families.

House System

Our House System is central to everything we do here at Beaumaris Secondary College. Upon

enrolment students are allocated to a GOAL Group that is part of one of the following Houses that were

named by our students in our foundation year.

NAME COLOUR ORIGIN OF NAME

Ricketts Purple/Blue Relating to Ricketts Point and an original Beaumaris High House name

after Captain Thomas Ricketts, one of the early Beaumaris settlers

Beckett Yellow/Green Named after Clarice Beckett, one of Australia’s most important

landscape artists and Beaumaris resident

Waratah Red/Orange Native Australian shrub and local street behind the school

Southern Navy/White Relating to water (one of the world’s largest four oceans)

Our House System:

• Encourages a positive school spirit as a result of ‘belonging’ to a group of cross age students.

• Provides cross-age house activities and friendly competition.

• Provides the opportunity for students to develop leadership skills.

House activities include swimming, athletics, cross country, the Beauie Bake Off, House Dance-off,

Art competitions, Parent Tower Building competitions and more!

Our learning spaces are also named after our Houses:

LEARNING SPACE HOUSE NAME

Reading for Success

According to researchers (Anderson, Wilson and Fielding), the most able students read more and

encounter a wider range of vocabulary. By reading just ten minutes a day, students’ word exposure

increases by at least 1500 words per year. To improve student reading skills an expectation is for

students to have a book with them every day. Students can borrow a book from the Library or can bring

in a book from home.

Progressive Achievement Test (PAT)

Students tudents in Year 7 – 10 complete the Progressive Achievement Test (PAT) each year. The

PAT assessment measures what students know, understand and are capable of across domains,

and helps monitor progress over time.

Canteen

The canteen provides a lunch order service and over-the-counter sales during Break 1, Break 2 and

lunchtime from Monday to Friday. Lunch orders can be placed at the canteen from 8.30am daily or

on-line via QUICKCLIQ prior to 8.00am. Please visit the Canteen page of our website for instructions

on placing online orders and to view the menu and price list.

Bike Sheds

Bike sheds are available to secure the bicycles of students who ride to and from school. They can be

accessed via Reserve or Balcombe Roads. We strongly encourage students to bring their own bike lock

to use inside (or outside) the bike sheds.

Labelling

We urge you to clearly label ALL garments, in particular jackets and tops so that items can be returned

through our Lost Property system. Hats, bags, lunch boxes, drink bottles and shoes should also be

labelled.

Lost Property

Lost Property is stored in reception. All labelled items are returned to their owners and various

unlabelled items are advertised in the college newsletter. Any items that are not claimed by the end of

each term are donated to charity.

6

Page 8: Year 7 2022 Induction Booklet - beaumarissc.vic.edu.au

Personal Property

Beaumaris Secondary College understands that students may sometimes like to bring items of

personal property to school. The Department of Education and Training does not have insurance for

personal property of staff, students and visitors. Beaumaris Secondary College does not take

responsibility for items of personal property that are lost, stolen or damaged at school or during school

activities. Damage to personal property brought to school is the responsibility of the owner of that

property. We strongly encourage students not to bring items of value to school, or to obtain

appropriate insurance for such items.

Visiting the School

All parents or carers who visit our school during school hours, other than for the purposes of school

pickups and drop offs or for specific school events (e.g. Parent-Teacher Interviews, Concerts,

Assemblies etc.), are required to sign in as a visitor at the school office. Visitors must:

• Sign in on the Compass Kiosk, record their name, purpose of visit

• Provide proof of identification to office staff upon request

• Produce their valid Working with Children Check where required by this policy (see below)

• Follow instruction from school staff and abide by all relevant policies relating to appropriate

conduct on school grounds e.g.: Child Safety Code of Conduct, Sexual Harassment Policy,

Workplace Bullying Policy, Respect for School Staff, Statement of Values etc.

• Return to the office upon departure, sign out.

Please refer to our Visitors policy for more information.

Working with Children Check (WWCC)

Considering our legal obligations, and our commitment to ensuring that Beaumaris Secondary College

is a child safe environment, we will require volunteers to obtain a WWC Check and produce their valid

card to the office for verification in a number of circumstances. Please refer to our Volunteer and

Visitors policy for more information.

Child Safety

Beaumaris Secondary College is committed to the safety and wellbeing of all children and young

people. This will be the primary focus of our care and decision-making. The school has zero tolerance

for child abuse. The school is committed to providing a child safe environment where children and

young people are safe and feel safe, and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives.

Particular attention will be paid to cultural safety of Aboriginal children, young children, children from

culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as the safety of children with a disability.

Every person involved in the school has a responsibility to understand the important and specific role

s/he plays individually and collectively to ensure that the wellbeing and safety of all children and young

people is at the forefront of all they do and every decision they make. Please refer to our Child Safe

policy for more information.
