From the Pastor’s Desk Fifth Sunday of Easter
Theme: “Christian Joy Tempered by Trials”
My dear brothers and sisters, we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter. Life’s experiences
teach us that human beings cannot live without joy. However, if life consisted only of
funerals without weddings and new births, only of work without recreation (a party, a
show, a vacation), the burden of human existence would be unbearable for most of us.
However, expecting too much joy from life is also dangerous because it easily results in
disappointment. We should not long for the absence of problems in our lives. That is an
unrealistic goal since in this world we will have troubles.
In our first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles, (14: 21-27), we are told that,
“Paul and Barnabas put fresh heart into the disciples, encouraging them to persevere in the
faith.” In the different places where they were, the first Christians found themselves faced
with difficulties. Some of them were even persecuted for their faith in Jesus. The Jews
made trouble for them. And, at times, the pagans— those who were neither Jews nor
followers of Jesus also made them to suffer. Remember the recent bombings in Sri Lanka,
persecutions in Nigeria and many other Christian Countries of the world.

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas, celebramos el quinto domingo de Pascua. Las
experiencias de la vida nos enseñan que los seres humanos no pueden vivir sin alegría.
Sin embargo, si la vida consistiera solo en funerales sin bodas y nuevos nacimientos, solo
trabajo sin recreación (una fiesta, un espectáculo, unas vacaciones), la carga de la
existencia humana sería insoportable para la mayoría de nosotros. Sin embargo, esperar
demasiada alegría de la vida también es peligroso porque fácilmente resulta en decepción.
No debemos desear la ausencia de problemas en nuestras vidas. Ese es un objetivo poco
realista ya que en este mundo tendremos problemas.
En nuestra primera lectura de hoy de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, (14: 21-27), se nos dice
que “Pablo y Bernabé ponen corazón fresco en los discípulos, animándolos a perseverar
en la fe.” En los diferentes lugares donde Fueron, los primeros Cristianos se encontraron
con dificultades. Algunos de ellos incluso fueron perseguidos por su fe en Jesús. Los
judíos les causaron problemas. Y, a veces, los paganos, aquellos que no eran judíos ni
seguidores de Jesús, también los hicieron sufrir. Recuerde los recientes bombardeos en Sri

(Continúado de la página 1) No hay duda de que algunos de los Cristianos en la comunidad cristiana
primitiva y en estos países actuales que están sufriendo persecuciones
pueden haber estado perdiendo el corazón. Es posible que hayan tenido
dudas, preguntándose si la forma de vida Cristiana era realmente lo que
deberían seguir. Este hombre, Jesús, ¿es realmente Dios? Todas las cosas
que Él había dicho y hecho, ¿todo esto era verdad? Quizás gran parte de
esto, fueron historias inventadas por sus seguidores. Pablo y Bernabé son
conscientes de que todo esto no es fácil. Ellos ven que ellos también de-
ben alentar a estos cristianos, para que no se desanimen. Las palabras de
los apóstoles tienen el propósito de dar nuevas fuerzas a la gente para que
“perseveren en la fe.”
¿Qué significa “perseverar?” Significa no rendirse, no desanimarse.
Significa seguir haciendo lo que hemos empezado a hacer, sin que nadie
ni nadie nos lo quite. No permitir que nada, ni nadie, nos supere y nos
haga abandonar lo que nos hemos propuesto lograr. En palabras sencillas
para ti y para mí como cristianos, “perseverar” significa permanecer fuerte
en tu creencia; para ser constante en sus esfuerzos; Para ser firmes en el
camino de la vida hemos elegido como flores de Jesús.
Esto es lo que Pablo y Bernabé nos están diciendo a nosotros y a los
primeros cristianos. Que perseveren en su fe. Escuchamos lo que dijeron:
“Todos tenemos que experimentar muchas dificultades antes de entrar al
reino de Dios.” En el cielo tenemos una eternidad de vida sin problemas
reservada para nosotros.
Esto es algo que tenemos que seguir recordándonos. La vida como
Cristiano no es fácil, pero no debemos desanimarnos. Hoy, hemos venido
a OLGC a orar juntos. Hemos venido a alabar a Dios y agradecerle por
todas las cosas buenas que nos ha dado. Especialmente durante las últimas
semanas y meses. Creo que también hemos venido aquí para encontrar
nuevas fortalezas en las próximas semanas y meses, no encontrar fallos ni
juzgarnos y condenarnos. Esperamos obtener un “corazón fresco” para
enfrentar todo lo que nos llegará esta semana y los próximos meses.
Quiero decirles que hay muchas cosas que deberían darnos este nuevo
corazón y el coraje que todos necesitamos.
Primero, debemos tener corazón y coraje, porque Dios está complacido
con que estemos aquí este Quinto domingo de Pascua. Él ve en nuestros
corazones el deseo de acercarse a Él, y eso lo hace muy feliz. Él está
esperando para darnos sus bendiciones. Si nos fijamos en nuestra
comunidad (OLGC), hay mucho para animarnos. Mira y piensa lo que
pasa en nuestra parroquia. Hay muchos cristianos buenos y generosos.
Son muchos entre ustedes que están listos para ayudar cuando se les llama
y se les pide que hagan algo por la parroquia. Piensa en las multitudes que
nos adoraban durante la Pascua. Vea la cantidad de niños pequeños y
adolescentes que asisten a misa cada domingo en nuestra parroquia...
Desafortunadamente, con demasiada frecuencia, nos damos cuenta
rápidamente de lo que no se hace y de lo que no se ha realizado.
Tomemos el corazón de “la obra que ha sido completada por la gracia de
Dios” Esto significa que Dios está obrando entre nosotros. Esta es una
buena razón para encontrar valor para ser fuertes en nuestra fe. Ser fuerte
incluso cuando nos encontramos con dificultades. Permanecer firmes
incluso cuando algunas personas quisieran vernos abandonar nuestra fe.
No olvides que más que nunca, Dios está con nosotros. Él nos mantendrá
firmes hasta el momento en que Él (Dios) “limpie todas las lágrimas de
nuestros ojos” (Nuestra segunda lectura Apocalipsis 21: 1-5).
Finalmente, siempre que te resulte difícil ser un buen Cristiano, cuando te
desanimes y necesites fortaleza, acude a Dios. Escúchale decirte que está
feliz con tus esfuerzos. Pídale a Él que ponga un “corazón fresco” en
usted. Entonces tendrás el coraje de hacer lo que hicieron los primeros
Cristianos—“perseverar en la fe.”
(Continued from page 1) There is no doubt that some of the Christians in the early Christian
community and these present countries undergoing persecutions
may have been losing heart. They may have had doubts, asking
themselves if the Christian way of life was really what they should
follow. This man, Jesus, is He really God? All the things He had
said and done, was all this true? Perhaps much of this, were stories
made up by His followers. Paul and Barnabas are aware that all
this is not easy. They see that they too must encourage these
Christians, so that they do not lose heart. The words of the apostles
are meant to give new strength to the people so that they
“Persevere in the Faith.”
What does it mean “to persevere?” It means not to give up, not to
get discouraged. It means to keep on doing what we have started
doing, without being taken away from it by anything or anybody.
Not allowing anything, or anyone, to overcome us and make us
abandon what we have set out to achieve. In simple words for you
and for me as Christians, “to persevere” means to remain strong in
your belief; to be steady in your efforts; to be firm in the way of
life we have chosen as flowers of Jesus.
This is what Paul and Barnabas are telling us and the early
Christians. That they should persevere in their faith. We heard
what they said, “We all have to experience many hardships before
we enter the kingdom of God.” In heaven we have an eternity of
problem free living reserved for us.
This is something we have to keep reminding ourselves. Life as a
Christian is not easy, but we should not lose heart. Today, we have
come to OLGC to pray together. We have come to praise God and
to thank Him for all the good things He has given us. Especially
during the past weeks and months. I believe we have also come
here to find new strength for the coming weeks and months not
find faults or judging and condemning one another. We hope to
get a “fresh heart” to face whatever will come to us this week
and the months to come. I want to tell you that there is much that
should give us this new heart, and the courage we all need.
First, we should take heart and courage because God is pleased
with our being here this Fifth Sunday of Easter. He sees in our
hearts the desire to come near to Him, and that makes Him very
happy. He is waiting to give us His blessings. If we look at our
community (OLGC), there is much to encourage us. Look and
think what happens in our parish. There are many good and
generous Christians. They are many among you who are ready to
help whenever they are called and are asked to do something for
the parish. Think about the multitudes that worshipped with us
during Easter. See the number of young children and adolescents
that attend Mass each Sunday in our parish...
Unfortunately, too often, we are quick to notice what is not done
and that which has not been realized. Let us all take heart from
“the work that has been completed by the grace of God” This
means that God is at work among us. This is a good reason to find
courage to be strong in our faith. To be strong even when we meet
with difficulties. To remain firm even when some people would
want to see us abandon our faith. Do not forget that more than
ever, God is with us. He will keep us steady until that time when
He (God) “will wipe away all tears from our eyes” (Our second
reading Apocalypse 21: 1-5).
Finally, whenever you find it difficult to be a good Christian, when
you get discouraged, and need strength, turn to God. Hear Him tell
you that He is happy with your efforts. Ask Him to put a “fresh
heart” into you. Then you will have the courage to do what the
first Christians did—“to persevere in the faith.”

What are Mass Intentions? What does it mean to have a Mass offered for someone? An individual may request to offer a Mass for several reasons. For example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as a birthday or birth) or, as is most common for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. During the Mass, both the living and dead are remembered, and how the Eucharistic Sacrifice of our Lord is of benefit to sinners, both living and dead. “We have loved them during life; let us not abandon them in death, until we have conducted them by our prayers into the house of the Lord.”—St. Ambrose (337AD –397AD)
The tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. Inscriptions discovered on tombs in Roman catacombs of the second century evidence this practice.
