Dear Parishioners,
The Gospel this Sunday is about the two disciples who are in a
journey from Jerusalem to Emmaus. Luke portrays this last
chapter of his Gospel as journey of wondering and thinking as
these two disciples struggle to believe in the Resurrection of
Jesus. This last chapter as well brings to fulfillment the Gospel
of Luke as he centers his own theme on “epigonosko” – a deep
knowing and seeing the presence of Jesus.
We recall that his Gospel comes to us with a series of questions
regarding “who” is Jesus. When Jesus declares a woman’s sin
forgiven, people ask: “Who is this who forgives sins?”; when
Jesus stills the windstorm and the disciples ponder: “Who then
is this, that he commands even the wind and water, and they
obey him?”; as Herod hears about all that Jesus has been do-
ing, he asked: "Who is this about whom I hear such things?;
when Jesus himself poses this question to his disciples: "Who
do people say that I am?; And Jesus asks us, “Who do you say
that I am?”
Through these questions, Luke models his Gospel to help us
draw closer to God and to better understand ourselves in the
life of faith. The journey to Emmaus is presented to us as a
journey of knowing, as a journey of recognizing the identity of
Jesus, again a journey of “epigonosko.”
Perhaps, the Road to Emmaus becomes a familiar road for
many of us as we continually search and recognize God espe-
cially during these difficult times. Within a very short time,
Coronavirus has come with a huge shock and it has challenged
our attitudes and behaviors radically. The world is out of con-
trol and many people don’t know where to turn. In many ways,
we have come to accept human limitations. During this time,
we ask God to “Stay with us…,” just like what the disciples did.
“God alone is our refuge and our strength, a helper close at
hand in times of distress” (Ps.46:1).In return, let us also stay
with Him as we continue to believe in God and live our faith.
Have a Blessed Sunday and I want to reassure you of our con-
tinued prayers for all our parishioners.
