Fifth Sunday of Easter Theme: “A branch cannot bear fruits by itself…”
We are told by Jesus Himself this 5th Sunday of Easter what is going to happen when we
are separated or distance ourselves from Him. In the gospel of John ,15: 1-5, Jesus uses
an imagery of branch removed away from the tree that withers or dries up to teach us
something very important in our Christian life.
Let us hear again the words of Jesus: “I am the vine, you are the branches. Cut off from
me, you can do nothing. Any one who does not remain in me is like a branch that has
been thrown away, he withers.” Let us try to see more clearly what Jesus wants us to un-
derstand. He is telling us something about Himself. You remember last week in John 10:
11-18, He also told us something about Himself, and about our ourselves. He said that He
is the Good Shepherd, and we are the sheep that belong to Him. This week, He is telling
us that He is the Vine, and we are the branches.
I said before that branch dies when it is cut off from the tree where it belongs. We belong
to Jesus, we are part of Him like branches are part of a tree, they belong to that tree. He
adds that cut off from Him, we can do nothing. Why does He say that? Because we can
do things when we are alive. Without life in us, we can do nothing. St. John Paul II taught
us, “Life without spirit isn’t fully human” The life of the branch is fed by the sap. Our
life, as Christians is God’s life in us. And this life of friendship with God is fed or nour-
ished by God Himself.
This life of God in us, we received it at our Baptism. On that day, we truly become God’s
children. Since then, God’s life is in us, God Himself lives in us; if we allow Him to do so
… His life in us is fed by living in special union with Him through Jesus. He Himself tells
us what we need to do to remain alive. “Make your home in me, as I make mine in you.

Quinto Domingo de Pascua
Tema: "Una rama no puede dar frutos por sí misma ..."
El mismo Jesús nos dice este 5º domingo de Pascua lo que sucederá cuando nos separe-
mos o nos alejemos de Él. En el evangelio de Juan, 15: 1-5, Jesús usa una imagen de una
rama alejada del árbol que se seca o se seca para enseñarnos algo muy importante en
nuestra vida cristiana.
Escuchemos nuevamente las palabras de Jesús: "Yo soy la vid, ustedes son las ramas.
Fuera de mí, no puedes hacer nada. Cualquiera que no permanezca en mí es como una
rama que ha sido arrojada, se seca. "Tratemos de ver más claramente lo que Jesús quiere
que comprendamos. Él nos está diciendo algo sobre sí mismo. Recuerdas la semana pasa-
da en Juan 10: 11-18, Él también nos dijo algo acerca de Sí mismo y acerca de nosotros
mismos. Él dijo que Él es el Buen Pastor, y nosotros somos las ovejas que le pertenecen.
Esta semana, Él nos está diciendo que Él es la Vid, y nosotros somos las ramas.
Dije antes que esa rama muere cuando se corta del árbol al que pertenece. Pertenecemos a
Jesús, somos parte de Él como las ramas son parte de un árbol, pertenecen a ese árbol. Él
agrega que, separados de Él, no podemos hacer nada. ¿Por qué dice eso? Porque podemos
hacer cosas cuando estamos vivos. Sin vida en nosotros, no podemos hacer nada. San
Juan Pablo II nos enseñó: "La vida sin espíritu no es completamente humana" La vida de
la rama es alimentada por la savia. Nuestra vida, como cristianos, es la vida de Dios en
nosotros. Y esta vida de amistad con Dios es alimentada o nutrida por Dios mismo.
Esta vida de Dios en nosotros, la recibimos en nuestro Bautismo. En ese día, realmente
nos convertimos en hijos de Dios. Desde entonces, la vida de Dios está en nosotros, Dios
mismo vive en nosotros; si le permitimos que lo haga ... Su vida en nosotros se alimenta
al vivir en unión especial con Él a través de Jesús. Él mismo dice (Continua en la pagina #3)

". Si vivimos en unión con Jesús, en Él y Él en nosotros, perma-
neceremos vivos, y más aún, daremos fruto en abundancia. ¿Qué
significa esto? ¿De qué tipo de fruta está hablando?
La imagen de la vid y las ramas nos anima a fomentar el compa-
ñerismo dentro de la comunidad de fe. En esta su primera epís-
tola, Juan nos dice que hay dos mandamientos: creer en Jesús
como el Hijo de Dios y la necesidad de amarnos unos a otros
como él nos amó. La comunidad de fe llena del Espíritu nos
permite conocer mejor a Jesús y amarnos unos a otros como
hermanos y hermanas en Jesucristo. Cuando verdaderamente
llegamos a conocer a Jesús (no como una idea sino como una
Persona viviente en nuestras vidas "y nos amamos unos a otros,
las obras del Espíritu se hacen evidentes.
Algo más sucede cuando vivimos en Jesús y Él en nosotros.
Mira lo que nos dice: "Si permaneces en mí, y mis palabras per-
manecen en ti, puedes pedir lo que quieras y lo conseguirás".
Estas son palabras muy claras. Esto significa que, cuando le
pedimos a Dios nuestras necesidades, o las necesidades de aque-
llos a quienes amamos, nuestra oración será escuchada. Pode-
mos estar seguros de esto.
Puede ser bueno preguntarnos a nosotros mismos, de vez en
cuando: "¿De verdad vivo en Jesús y Jesús en mí? Y para encon-
trar la respuesta, puede hacerse otras preguntas. (I) Cuando miro
a la gente, ¿los miro con Jesús? (II) Cuando tomo una decisión,
¿lo hago con Jesús? (III) Cuando hago planes, ¿los hago con
Jesús? (IV) Cuando hago cosas diferentes, ¿las hago con Jesús?
En otras palabras: ¿comparto con Jesús todo lo que vivo día a
día? ¿Me vuelvo hacia Él, está Él presente en mí, de vez en
cuando durante el día? Este es el tipo de vida que El quiere ... Él
mismo nos ha pedido que así sea. "Haz de tu hogar en mí como
yo lo hago en ti" ...
Finalmente, probablemente alrededor de su casa, o cerca de ella,
hay árboles. Quizás usted, el padre o la madre de la familia,
podría cortar una pequeña rama. No de una manera que arruine
el árbol, que es parte de la creación de Dios, sino una pequeña
rama. Colóquelo cerca de la puerta principal de su casa. Será un
recordatorio para todos los miembros de la familia que entran y
salen que debemos permanecer unidos a Jesús y obtener vida de
El. Mientras lo miras, de vez en cuando durante la semana, re-
cuerda las palabras de Jesús. Recuerda que Él quiere vivir en ti y
quiere que vivas en El.
(Continued from page 1) Whoever remains in me, with me in him, bears fruit in
plenty.” If we live in union with Jesus, in Him and He in us,
we will remain alive, and more still, we will bear fruit in
plenty. What does this mean? What kind of fruit is He speak-
ing about?
The image of the vine and branches encourages us to foster
fellowship within the community of faith. In this his first
epistle, John tells us that there are two commandments: be-
lief in Jesus as God’s Son and the need to love one another
as he loved us. The Spirit-filled community of faith is one
which allows us to know Jesus better and to love one another
as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. When we truly come
to know Jesus (not as an idea but as a living Person in our
lives” and love one another, the works of the Spirit becomes
evident.
Something else happens as we live in Jesus and He in us.
Look at what He tells us: “If you remain in me, and my
words remain in you, you may ask what you will and you
shall get it” These are strong word indeed. This means that,
when we ask God for our needs, or the needs of those we
love, our prayer will be heard. We can be sure of this.
It may be good to ask ourselves, from time to time: “Do I
really live in Jesus and Jesus in me? And to find the answer,
you can ask yourself a number of other questions. (I) When
I look at people, do I look at them with Jesus? (II) When I
make a decision, do I make it with Jesus? (III) When I make
plans, do I make them with Jesus? (IV) When I do different
things, do I do them with Jesus?
In other word: Do I share with Jesus all that I live from day
to day? Do I turn to Him, is He present in me, from time to
time during the day? This is the kind of life he wants… He
Himself has asked us that it be so. “make your home in me as
I make mine in you” …
Finally, probably around your house, or near it, there are
trees. Perhaps you, the father or the mother of the family,
could cut a small branch. Not in a way that will spoil the
tree, which is part of God’s creation, but a small branch.
Place it near the main door of your house. It will be a re-
minder to everyone of the family who goes in and out that
we are to remain united to Jesus and draw life from Him. As
you look at it, from time to time during the week, remind
yourself of the words of Jesus. Remember that He wants to
live in you and He wants you to live in Him.
