Today’s Gospel calls us to a radical awakening; a taking stock
of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. We are called to be
prepared and alert, that embracing the Kingdom of God is not
a passive experience, or indeed a ticking of a box exercise; I
went to Mass – check; I gave money to charity – check. Jesus
demands more of us; He is asking for our very being – All
that I am! We are to put God first and surrender all our attach-
ments to Him – our family, power, possessions. It is not so
much that we aren’t to love them; rather, we have the freedom
through God to be in the right relationship with the world
when we put God first. Embracing the cross is daunting and
frightening at first sight, however, God wants the best for us,
and we are not left alone if we choose to follow Him. We
pray today to trust in God.

This Sunday’s Gospel
Provide your children with a list of things that they are
responsible for, mixed with things that they like to do—for
example, make their beds, take out the bins, go to the park,
do homework, watch television, have a snack, feed the cat.
The list should reflect their responsibilities and favourite
recreations. Tell them to pretend that visitors are coming and
ask which of the things listed should be done first. Explain
that this is called setting priorities.
Remember the Gospel . Ask them what Jesus says is the most
important thing for them to do. Jesus tells us that the number-
one priority is to follow him. But just as it is not always easy
to do the things we are supposed to do before doing the fun
things, it is not always easy to be a follower of Jesus. Yet
when we put Jesus first, we will be truly happy
St. Ciaran 9th. September Ciarán was born in around 516 in Co.
Roscommon. His father was a carpenter
and chariot maker. As a boy, Ciarán
worked as a cattle herder. He founded
the Monastery of Clonmacnoise with ten
fellow companions. As abbot, he worked
on the first buildings of the monastery;
however, he died about seven months later
of a plague, in his early thirties.

TUESDAY, 6TH SEPTEMBER AT 7.30pm
In JOHNSTOWN PASTORAL CENTRE
Topics: Asylum Seekers and Refugees in
Direct Provision Centres
Homeless People on Dublin’s Streets
Fr. Paddy Byrne from Portlaoise Parish will speak to us
of their Justice group’s experience in serving refugees
and asylum seekers in local Direct Provision Centres
and homeless people on the streets of Dublin.
Direct Provision Centres were established by the
Government in 2000 as Ireland had increasing numbers
of immigrants. These Centres are far from ideal with
lengthy waiting times and unsuitable living conditions
where residents do not have the right to work.
We hope to learn from Fr. Paddy Byrne and Portlaoise
Parish’s experience in local Centres
and their visits to the homeless people in Dublin city
and to do something similar for the residents of Direct
Provision Centres in the Dublin area and for the home-
less people on our streets.
