2. Types of Social Media

  • Blogs - A blog is a website where posts are listed in chronological order. Blogs usually have comments which are posted along with the original entry

3. Microblogs - Microblogging is a form of blogging where users provide brief updates and publish them on microblogging sites. Youve probably heard of Twitter. Microbloggers can submit their updates via the web, social media platforms (often referred to as clients), via text messages, instant message or even email. 4. RSS - RSS is a syndication format that allows websites and blogs to distribute their content as feeds to users.Instead of having to visit the website, users can sign up for the feed provided by the website or blog and using an RSS reader or aggregator (like Google Reader), access the feed. Users can sign up for as many feeds from different websites as desired and then access and manage those feeds all at once using their RSS reader. 5. Types of Social Media

  • Photo Sharing -Photo sharing sites allow users to upload and post their photographs online to share them with other users or to post on websites and blogs.

6. Podcasts - A podcast is digital audio that is distributed via the Internet for playback on a users computer or portable media device a mp3 player such as an iPod. 7. Bookmarking and Social News(digg, reddit, de.li.cious) - Social bookmarking allows web users to save, organize and share their bookmarks of web pages on the Internet (vs. their own computers). Social news sites allow users to submit web pages and articles and have other users vote on them. The links with the highest number of votes usually get featured on the site's front page. 8. Types of Social Media

  • Social Networking - Social networking services Facebook and MySpace being the most well-known- are websites that allow online users to connect and share information with other online users. New player: Google+

9. Video Sharing -Video sharing allows users to upload and share videos to video sharing website such as YouTube. Other users can watch the videos, comment on them, share them with other users and even embed them on their own websites and blogs. 10. Types of Social Media

  • Wikis -A wiki is a collaborative website that allows users to contribute to and edit the content on the website. Wikipedia is a well-known wiki. Wikifarms host multiple wikis and provide tools for users to create their own wikis.

11. Location services These services allow users to let the people they're connected to know where they are. These can be pushed out to other services like Facebook and Twitter. However, you can also hide your check-ins. From a business perspective, it's good to be in these so that your customers can check-in when they're at your location. 12. Let's stop here for some questions. 13. Types of Social Media

The Big Four

  • Twitter
  • I think of Twitter as a news feed.

31. If possible, make sure it's not one-way.

  • (However, some agencies might have to do one-way only.)

Twitter Chat schedule on Google Docs the list that I brought up which has Twitter chats listed in alpha order by hashtag. ( #ReachInt ) 32. The Big Four 33. The Big Four

  • Twitter - ReTweets RTs
  • A retweet is when you republish something from another Twitter user.

34. This spreads the word to your followers on Twitter. 35. It causes a ripple effect and that helps more people hear about it 36. Old format (still used a lot)

  • RT @reginawalton I'm having a great day!

37. The Big Four

  • Twitter - @replies or mentions
  • Want to reply to a tweet that someone else has posted or talk to someone on Twitter?

38. Use an @reply by using the @ symbol followed by the other person's username. 39. Why? When you use an @reply, the other person will see your post, even if he or she doesn't follow you. 40. The Big Four

  • Twitter Direct Messages (Dms)
  • A Message (previously called a Direct Message) is a private message sent via Twitter to one of your followers. (This is different than mentions and @replies.)
  • In turn, people you follow can send you a private message.

41. You cannot send a direct message to a user who is not following you Weiner he thought he was sending a DM. 42. The Big Four

  • G+ isn't on these sites yet because they've not opened the application programming interface (API) for developers.

55. Help!!! (aka platforms or clients) 56. Best Practices
