Why do you need demonstrative adjectives?

Demonstrative adjs describe the location of persons, places or things relative to the position of the speaker (the distance from the speaker).

What are the demonstrative adjectives?

The demonstrative adjectives can be grouped by whether they are masculine or feminine and singular or plural; or if they refer to things that are close to the speaker, closer to the person you are talking to, or far from both people:Close to you (aquí & acá = here) This & Theseeste, esta & estos, estasCloser to other person (allí & ahí = there) That & Thoseese, esa & esos, esasFar from both (allá = over there) That & Those over there—aquel, aquella & aquellos, aquellas

REMEMBER to make the demonstrative adjective agree with the object the speaker is describing.

These books (masc. plural / close to the speaker) = Estos libros That pen (fem. sing. / close to the other person) = Esa pluma Those drinks over there (masc. plural / far from both)= Aquellos RefrescosThis paper (masc. sing / close to the speaker) = Este papelThat car (masc. sing / close to the other person) = Ese carro.Those houses over there (fem. plural / far from both) = Aquellas casas

Mnemonic Device to remember the demonstrative adjs

This and These both have Ts (este, esta, estos, estas)That and Those don’t; (ese, esa, esos, esas)and if the object is far away,that’s the one that starts with A (aquel, aquella, aquell o s , aquellas)

How do Demonstrative Adjectives become Demonstrative Pronouns?

To use a demonstrative adjective (that car) as a demonstrative pronoun (that one), drop the noun and add an accent on the first “E”Dem Adj: Este carro (viejo)= This (old) carDem Pron: Éste (viejo) = This (old) one Dem Adj: Ese lápiz (amarillo) = That (yellow) pencilDem Pron: Ése (amarillo)= That (yellow) oneDem Adj: Aquel chico (alto) = That (tall) boy over thereDem Pron: Aquél (alto)= That (tall) one over there.*Follow this rule for all the demonstrative adjectives
