The Sick Man of Europe – Revolts Against the Old Order

 The Ottoman Empire was once a large, flourishing empire. Itstretched onto three continents (Asia, Europe, and Africa), and wascomposed (made up) of many different people and cultures. However,

by the !""#s, the forces of nationalism accelerated ($uic%ened) thedecline (the fall) of the &ttoman Empire.

 The fall of the &ttoman Empire can be contributed to many factors.&ne factor was that the &ttoman Empire was too large. 'ecause it wasso big, it was very hard to rule the Empire. It was hard to maintaincontrol, order, collecttaes, and modernize(improve) the countryand ma%e it moreadvanced and

industrialized. Thesultan (%ing) could notrule the entire empire byhimself. This led to himappointing (pic%ing)officials to rule differentareas of the empire.ome of these officialsthough, acted on their own self*interests and agenda, and not theagenda of the sultan. 

 The &ttoman Empire also consisted of many different areas, whichincluded people who spo%e differentlanguages, had different religions, culture, andethnicity from the &ttomans. As a result, the&ttomans had a hard time ruling people whowere different from them. All these cultures inthe &ttoman Empire led to disunity (notbeing united). As nationalism movementsbecame more successful in Europe, such as in

Italy and +ermany, other cultures began tobecome influenced by nationalism. In !,the Serians in the northern part of the&ttoman Empire won independence from the&ttomans. In !-", nationalistic movementscaused the +ree%s to rally together in the&ttoman Empire. 'y !-", +reece had won its

nationalistic war, and became independent. hortly after +reece,

omanians and 'ulgarians revolted, and set up their own independentnations. !ationalism revolts were leading people in the &ttomanEmpire to fight for their ethnicity and freedom. As a result, many newindependent nations came out of the &ttoman Empire.

In addition, other problems eisted, specifically in economics. The Tur%s were unable to raise enough money from its people. Thus, the&ttomans Empire was unable to modernize itself, li%e 'ritain and therest of Europe did. They were unable to industrialize their empire" unable to improve science and medicine, and unable to moderni/etheir army and military weapons. As a result, many nations began toengage in war with the &ttomans. 'y the mid !""#s, the &ttomansbecame %nown as the #Sick Man of Europe$. They received thisname due to the rapid ($uic%) lost of land and decline of the &ttomanEmpire. 0ot only did the &ttomans lose land due to nationalism movements, they lost land due to other European countries all

attac%ing them. ussia attac%ed from the east, and too% over easternports of the &ttoman Empire. Austria attac%ed from the north, andtoo% over an area of land called 'osnia. 'ritain and 1rance attac%edthe &ttomans in 0orth Africa. 'y the late !""#s, the &ttomans lostover half their empire in span of a little over -" years. 1rom !2 345, the &ttomans continued to decline and lose their empire, pieceby piece.
