“A stitch in time saves nine.”

Mending while you wait: tears repaired, patches applied, buttons replaced, hems redone…..etc.

Community Center Lobby, Wednesday September 21st, 11 AM to 2 PM

I like to mend and have done it for friends and family for years. Now that I’m retired, I’d like to share my small talent with my community as well.

Hope to see you there.

Chiloquin Vector Control News On Wednesday SEPTEMBER 28 at 6:30PM the Chiloquin Vector Control District will meet in the Chiloquin Community Center Conference Room, 140 S 1st Street to discuss vector control business. The public is always welcome to attend our meetings. Topics include but not limited to bill paying and our contractor’s season ending mosquito control report. Next year there will be two Board of Trustee Positions that need to be filled. Any resident of the district over age 18 may apply to be a volunteer Board of Trustee member. Chiloquin Community Calendars Friends of the Chiloquin Library put out the Chiloquin Community Calendar each year. It is one of our very important fund raisers. We fund several children’s programs plus other library projects. If you haven’t seen the calendar, it has a picture by one of the elementary students that is the winner of our art contest in the spring. On the 2017 calendar, the picture will be artwork by 4th grader, Rose Penaloza. It has business ads from local businesses, and on each day of each month there are birthdays, anniversaries, memorials and meeting notices. If anyone is interested in putting their family birthdays, anniversaries, memorials or meeting notices on the calendar it is only 50¢ per listing. We have a limited capacity for business ads but still have some room. It is a great way to advertise. If you would like to ask about an ad, put something

on the calendar or order a calendar (they make great Christmas gifts and only cost $4.50 including shipping) please call the library at 783-3315 and leave your name and number to have a member of the calendar committee contact you. You can also sign up at the library to be contacted. If you ordered a calendar or put listings on the calendar last year, you will automatically be contacted by one of the calendar committee persons.

THRIVE (Tribal Health: Reaching Out InVolves Everyone) at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB) has received funding from the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention Grant to develop a suicide prevention social marking campaign for American Indian and Alaska Native military personnel and veterans. We are hoping to get input from the AI/AN veteran population on what materials should be developed and what messages should be conveyed. If you are interested in sharing your perspectives on the campaign, the survey will take 5-10 minutes to complete: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/THRIVEveterans Please share this link with anyone you think might be interested in contributing. We hope to have resultant materials disseminated nationally by May 2017, just in time for Memorial Day 2017. Your ideas and feedback are greatly appreciated! Respectfully, Celena J. East Rim Drive Open to Nonmotorized Recreation on September 17 and 24 CRATER LAKE, OREGON – Crater Lake National Park, in partnership with Discover Klamath, will host the fourth annual Ride the Rim days on September 17 and 24, 2016. On these consecutive Saturdays, East Rim Drive from North Junction to Park Headquarters will be closed to motorized vehicles from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to allow for nonmotorized recreation including biking, hiking, and running. Superintendent Craig W. Ackerman said, “Ride the Rim has grown in popularity each year. It provides an opportunity to experience East Rim Drive in a unique way, under your own power, whether you’re on a bike or on your own two feet. It is a strenuous endeavor, but the rewards of a slower pace, opportunities for quiet reflection, and healthy, vigorous recreation make it a special experience for many people.” Visitors on these days should expect a large number of bicyclists on park roads. Please ride and drive with caution and patience. Cyclists should ride single-file when sharing the road with motorists. Portions of West Rim Drive may be unpaved and some pullouts will be inaccessible because of an ongoing road construction project. Park staff recommend that bicyclists avoid riding on West Rim Drive if possible, because of rough road conditions and increased traffic from Ride the Rim participants, shuttles, and other park visitors. Ride the Rim parking is at North Junction, Park Headquarters, and the Picnic Hill area of Rim Village. Participants are encouraged to share rides to help ease parking congestion. A free shuttle will transport participants to the start of their Ride the Rim experience or to their vehicles at the end. The shuttle will run between North Junction, Rim Village, and Park Headquarters. This year, the shuttle will not carry bicycles in an effort to accommodate more people. A person or people from each party will need to remain with bicycles while members of their party park or retrieve vehicles. For single riders, there will be a limited bike valet at North Junction and Park Headquarters. Lost Creek Campground will close on the nights of September 16, 17, 23, and 24 to accommodate volunteers working to support Ride the Rim. Mazama Campground will be open on these days. For more information visit www.RideTheRim2016.com. Wow! Ride the Rim has exploded with registrations… There are now over 5,000 registered participants for Ride the Rim, about equally divided between the 2 weekends Saturday September 17th and Saturday September 24th, and most from far away points. This means we desperately need some extra help for both weekends. If you can help or know anyone who can, email or call Tonia at Discover Klamath. This should be a fabulous event with lots of chances to talk with riders about Crater Lake's Backyard. The route is open from 8am to 6pm as would be the shifts we’d need to fill. As the days slows down, some people can head home, and it will mostly likely be busiest in the morning as we check in registrants. You would be expected to bring your own sack lunch and a refillable water bottle, or drink of your choice.

Reduced blue-green algae and toxin levels confirmed; continued caution with pets advised The Oregon Health Authority has lifted the health advisory issued June 24 for Howard Bay located in the southwest corner of Upper Klamath Lake, northwest of Klamath Falls in Klamath County. Water monitoring has confirmed that the level of blue-green algae toxins are below guideline values for human exposure. However, the Oregon Health Authority recommends that people continue to be cautious with their pets in the lake because toxins are still above the very low exposure levels established for dogs. Oregon health officials advise recreational visitors to always be alert to signs of algae blooms in Oregon waters, because only a fraction of the many lakes in Oregon are monitored for blue-green algae by state and federal agencies. People and their pets should avoid areas where the water is foamy, scummy, thick like paint, pea-green, blue-green or brownish red in color, if a thick mat of blue-green algae is visible in the water, or bright green cells are suspended in the water column. If you observe these signs in the water you are encouraged to avoid activities that cause you to swallow water or inhale droplets, such as swimming or high-speed water activities. For health information, to report human or pet illnesses due to blooms, or to ask questions about a news release, contact the Oregon Health Authority at 971-673-0400. For information about advisories issued or lifted for the season, contact the Oregon Public Health toll-free information line at 1-877-290-6767 orvisit the Harmful Algae Blooms website and select “Algae Bloom Advisories.”

Yreka, CA — Permits for the 2016 fall mushroom harvesting season on the Goosenest and Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger Districts are now available. The fall mushroom season ends December 31, 2016. Permits may be obtained Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Goosenest Ranger District, 37805 Highway 97 Macdoel, CA and the Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District, 63822 Highway 96, Happy Camp, CA. Harvesting wild mushrooms is a popular outdoor family activity. Please take safety precautions when venturing out in the woods. Consider weather and road conditions before travelling. Let someone know where you intend on picking and remember that cell phone coverage is limited in many areas of the forest. Permits allow harvesters to pick varying amounts. Permits for four consecutive days cost $20 for 8 gallons. Each additional day of picking costs $5. Monthly (30 consecutive days) permits cost $50 for 20 gallons. A permit for the entire season costs $100 for 40 gallons. To ensure sustainability of fall mushroom harvest, the harvest permit includes specific conditions and restrictions which permit holders need to read, understand and insure compliance. Additional information regarding mushroom harvesting, camping and fire restrictions is available by calling the Goosenest Ranger District, at (530) 398-4391 or the Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District at (530) 493-2243. Yreka, CA--The Gap Fire, currently at 33,867 acres, was declared 100 percent contained September 17, 2016 at 6:00pm. No new no fire growth is expected. Management of the Gap Fire has been transferred from Norcal Team 1 to the Klamath National Forest and a Type 3 management team under the leadership of Incident Commander Josh Mathiesen. Crews will continue suppression repair operations as well as patrolling to insure the fire remains within the containment line. The fire is expected to continue to smolder and burn within the fire perimeter--most likely until season ending rains occur. Fire officials are asking visitors to avoid the fire area because of dangers associated with the fire and safety risk to fire fighters still working in the area. The public is encouraged to check with local District Offices, on websites or social media for information about current conditions before heading out to the woods. A new Forest Closure Order has been implemented for the Gap Fire on the Klamath National Forest—reducing the area affected by the previous closure order. Significant areas of land have been re-opened on the east and west sides of the fire. The Pacific Crest Trail is now open for hikers. Details are available on the Klamath National Forest web site at www.fs.usda.gov/klamath.

A soggy koala found the perfect vantage point to scope out a safe spot away from floodwaters in Stirling on Wednesday. Crafers resident Russell Latter captured a photograph as it perched itself on top of a fence post on Old Carey Gully Rd. U.S. Department of the Interior — at Denali National Park and Preserve. Mother Nature put on quite an amazing light show last week at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, occurs when a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields, interacts with the earth's atmosphere. It’s a phenomenon that occurs year-round, but it’s only in the fall, winter and early spring that there’s enough darkness to make them visible. Photo courtesy of Hobbes Barber.

New crab species discovered in Chinese fish market

Colorful freshwater crabs make attractive pets, and are being increasingly traded in South China’s pet fish markets, researchers say. At one such market, researchers collected a new species of maroon-brown crab with reddish-purple claws and legs, which belongs to both a new species and a new genus.

https://news.mongabay.com/2016/09/new-crab-species-discovered-in-chinese-fish-market/ Badger Run Wildlife Rehab: Purple Martins are an extremely rare site in the Klamath Basin, but I can personally attest that they do exist here after spotting several one day this summer repeatedly swooping over a pond (no it wasn't a swallow). Growing up in the Midwest I was always under the impression that these little guys ate lots of mosquitoes. Turns out they eat everything BUT mosquitoes. It was a "falsehood" attributed to the guy who made a fortune selling purple martin condos! They do like about every other type of flying insect though including flying fire ant queens. http://blog.nature.org/science/2016/09/12/purple-martins-the-bird-that-relies-on-human-built-nests/

Black-faced Hawk (Leucopternis melanops) by Magalie L’Abbé on Flickr. This low-density species has traditionally been believed to be restricted to Amazon Basin north of the Amazon River, but there are several records south of this river, in, for example, the Brazilian states of Pará and Acre, and south-eastern Peru.

A yellow-bellied sea snake swims off Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The reptile travels long distances for its relatively small size. Photograph By Adrian Hepworth, Alamy Overall the yellow-bellied sea snake boasts an incredible resume for an animal that weighs less than a mango. It breathes air, but can stay underwater for three-and-a-half hours. Its arsenal includes venom that can kill a person—though deaths are not common—and a paddle-shaped tail that helps steer the animal through the water. It never lives on land and can survive for months in a state of dehydration. Read the article

FCE (Family and Community Education)

Meetings are the 2nd Wed of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 3rd Wed of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
