Dancing. I love dancing. I don’t do it often enough outin the world, but there’s always plenty of it going on in

my kitchen and living room whenever I’ve got myhousekeeping groove on. I did venture out for a boogie theother day though. I can’t say I’m a particularly good dancer, but I am an enthusiastic one. That sounds ominous, but I dotry not to just be a bundle of flailing limbs knockingbeverages off tables and other dancers akimbo.

When we decided it was time to go I was shattered, butin a very good way. I used muscles that usually lie dormanteven through a yoga class, andI used them with joy. I grinnedat the DJ’s choices, I wasamazed at incredible versionsof familiar tracks only thatspecial tribe of ‘disk jockey’ isever privy to. And I thankedmy friend for taking me outdancing. I love dancing.

My sunglasses aren’t working and the burger isunsettling my already fragile stomach. I didn’t get

much sleep last night and while going outside seemed like agood idea at the time, lying in the Pavilion gardens on aSaturday with children running around seems inappropriateand my brain can’t cope with it.

I blame last night. It is so unlike me but also like me, atleast the me I am right now. My friend Peyton asked mearound his and we didn’t get much sleep. Well we gotabout an hour but we had better things to do, like sleepingtogether. I started staying round his when we realisedneither of us wanted a relationship but we still wanted eachother. It made sense since we knew there was no future sowe just decided to have fun.

So after managing to get some sleep, this morning I waswoken up by Greg calling me to ask me where I was. Lyingin another man’s bed with only a sheet covering me, Icompletely forgot I had plans with the person I actuallyfancied – I could be going to Duke of York’s. I’ve alwayswanted to go to the cinema since I hear they put on artsfilms and the building looks cool outside. I also wouldn’tmind grabbing some popcorn and hanging out. It’s a shamesince I could actually imagine being romantic with himrather than just getting drunk with Peyton. Greg and Ishared things in common rather than just our attraction toeach other but I’m too tired so I’m going to have to sit thisone out. I mean, I couldn’t just go from one man’s bed toanother man’s heart? Could I?

CAITLINAbout A Girl

Ihave always enjoyed eating out and, unlike many, I like toeat out alone. Dining alone offers two benefits. Firstly I

can order what I like without fear of being reprimanded forbeing too greedy or indeed too extravagant. If I want thebloody lobster I have the bloody lobster!

Secondly you can eavesdrop on neighboring diners. Okay,I know it's rude but hands up those of you who don't? Ithought so, we all do it.

Last night I dined alone at a favourite restaurant, TheChilli Pickle. It’s convenient for getting to the theatre forcurtain up too. I ordered my usual delicious supper andrelaxed with a beer. At a nearby table three people arrivedand chatted until a waiter asked if they were ready to order. They were not and asked for more time. On his return hewas faced with a barrage of questions. The menu in thisparticular restaurant is excellent and offers a wide varietyof dining options, deals and the like. But for one diner thiswas not choice enough and she wanted to take bits fromhere and there to create her dinner. My heart wept for thepoor waiter as he battled to fulfill her needy desires.

The waiter was patient and unphased, he broughtsamples of two wines for them to choose from andaccommodated the difficult diner’s requests with adignified calm. I know that we are led to believe that thecustomer is always right, but to what extent? On thisoccasion I was more convinced that the customer is alwaysright, even when they are wrong! Full marks to theexcellent waiter too for not losing his temper.

It’s that time of year again, when Brightonians around thecity dust off their superhero or villain costumes and think

about heading to the seafront for another epic battlebetween the good and evil! It can only be the Heroes Runvs Villains Run, in aid of Pass It On Africa.

The concept is simple: On race day, the teams will line upagainst each other and go head to head in a straight race tothe finish line. In both the 5km and the 10km race, the firstteam to reach 100 finishers will win the day. You don’t haveto be an athlete to take part, so the event is a fantasticopportunity for all the family to get involved.

As well as the 5k and 10k distances for the grown upWonder Women and Lex Luthers among you, there is alsothe everpopular Kids 500mDash plus a Youth Mile Race.Every runner will receive amedal and there will beprizes for the best costumesin all categories. Outfits canbe shopbought or homemade, but it’s best to think of thepracticalities of running in it before getting too carriedaway with the design!

The teams are also going headtohead in fundraising forPass It On Africa. Hero or Villain, one thing that everyonecan agree on is the importance of their cause. MattLambert, Pass It On Africa cofounder explains:

“In 2016 we aim to complete our three year developmentproject at the Nyantonzi Primary School in Masindi,Uganda. The objective is to develop the school into asustainable and wellperforming institution where all thechildren, girls and boys alike, receive a quality education in

a safe and secure environment. “Last year’s race raised £18,711 for Pass It On Africa,

every penny of which went to the Nyantonzi SchoolProject. The charity is run entirely voluntarily by a handful

of friends, so the race entryfee covers the annual charityrunning costs plus the cost ofthe race itself. This is how100% of fundraising can gostraight to supporting

education in Africa.“Pass It On Africa aim to raise £20,000 at this years race.

To achieve this they are asking each runner to try and raise£20 sponsorship. If this is achieved, you will not onlyenable over 800 young people to achieve a quality primaryeducation but you will also help them help themselves outof poverty.”

So, whether you wish to save the day as a hero or ruinthe day as a villain, sign up for a fun day out, and at thesame time help put a smile on the face of a child in Africa.Brighton Heroes Run Vs Villains Run, Sunday 15 May 2016,www.heroesrun.org.uk, www.facebook.com/HEROE5RUN

When I had my first interview for Latest TV News, TimRidgway asked me what kind of stories I wanted to

cover. I said that eventually, I'd like to be embedded in theMiddle East as a war correspondent. So on my first day, Iwas sent out on my first big scoop, only to find out I wascovering a "butterfly counting event". Hardly thepreparation I was looking for. But like Mr Miyagi in TheKarate Kid, he was teaching me a valuable lesson – that no reporter is above a story. Especially when it comes tolocal news.

18 months later and I've been enjoying my new role as anews producer and occasional anchor. What a privilege it isto produce the news, and what a challenge. To decide whatgoes in and what stays out, to guide reporters as they work,to determine how to present stories most effectively and toshape the way news will unfold. There’s an awful lot ofdetail and pressures that influence those decisions day today. News production is challenging in ways I neverimagined. I’ve learnt how to prioritise tasks, how to managepeople efficiently and how to smash out a local theatrenews script on a Tuesday.

Of course there's the more outrageous challenge oftrying to broadcast live news from a music bar on one ofthe busiest streets in Brighton. Some days we'll have afourpiece Spanish band sound checking as the live newscomes to a close. Other days a family of seagulls will cometo roost on the roof our studio, screeching over the chatshow.

Iwill be honest from the get go and say thatI am only occasionally tempted by the idea

of a burger. They did not form a part of mychildhood and have to be very good indeedto excite me. Few are very good with one ortwo notable exceptions here in Brighton thatI have written about in the last two years. Sowhen I was invited along to the launch ofStock Burger I accepted with trepidation.

First impressions were good, what is not tolove about a bar that champions local ales, beers and spirits. I started off an impressiveespresso martini madewith my favouriteBlackdown Gin. It wasthe first of manyexcellent drinks thatnight...

It was no big, comeone come all celeb 'B' list affair, but a farmore contained event with many of myfoodie writer chums and a goodrepresentation of the suppliers that therestaurant, part of a new chain, haveengaged with. Each made a short andinformative speech before the main event, the food.

I was invited to choose a main course andspotting a braised short rib, or Jacob's ladder,I was able to sidestep the burger. I need nothave worried as fellow guests tucked intosome pretty impressive ones.

First though came an array of side dishesand starters, and they were good, betterthan good in fact and in particular the

chicken wings which were delicious, theywere exceptional and I was in grave dangerof peaking too soon as I scoffed them down.

So finally that short rib. My word, what atreat, the best since a memorable short rib atthe Michelin starred Curlew at Bodiam. Nowthat is praise indeed. It was everything asweet cured beef rib should be, a sticky, unctuous, falling off the bone treat. A perfectblend of sweet and savoury. It was big too,and after my chicken wing fest I was sadlybeaten. I was pretty beaten by the puds

which I onlypayed lip servicetoo, but myfellow guestswere enthusedand made lightwork of them.

I liked Stock Burger, I liked the stylish andcomfortable interior. It may be part of agrowing chain but it has an individual look, and a fabulous position overlooking the sea.I liked too the fact that it works as both barand restaurant and with their policy of greatbeers and cocktails it makes an attractivenew option when meeting friends, especiallyas after a few drinks you can easily stay onand dine at prices that by modern standardsseemed to be very easy on the wallet. I hopeto go back soon, and maybe I will have oneof those very impressive burgers.137 Kings Road, Brighton, BN1 2JF01273 828260stockburgerco.com

Firstly, theybring out the comedy ofthe story. This is a deadlyfarce with the twists of agreat thriller. But it is thecast who bring the wholeto life and in particularJessie Wallace and ShaneRitchie. Wallace iscompelling watching, milking every last word forfull effect and using facialskills to enliven her superbperformance. The London based fourpiece have already achieved atremendous amount in their short time together. From

playing the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury, to touring withAltJ, and headlining various UK tours including a long soldout show at Brighton Dome, the rise of Wolf Alice fromopen mics to some of the biggest stages has beenstaggering.

Coming to London to study, and bringing his acousticguitar with him, guitarist Joff (Jonathon is his real name)soon ventured in to the open mic scene, where he metEllie, and started the Wolf Alice project. “I came to do adegree in London, a B.Ed, integrated with a teachingtraining qualification, which I just managed to finish, thanksto a very considerate tutor of mine. It was just me and Elliefor a couple of years. I met her out and about at open mics, and we did that circuit for a while. But, it’s hard to getnoticed at those kind of things, when you’re playing quietermusic. We had no money really, all we had was acousticguitars.

“It got to the point where we thought it was getting a tinybit tedious, doing the same circuit, not seeming to benoticed or whatever, so we decided to be a bit brattish, abit louder, and make people listen to us. A friend of ourssuggested Theo (bass) and Joel (drums). Neither of themcould play drums or bass, they were both guitar players, sothey had to pick it up on the fly. I think Joel had tworehearsals before we had a show. He was by no means adrummer at that point, but Joel is just one of thoseannoying people who can pick up anything and learn it.”

It seems so simple, doesn't it? And perhaps, this DIYapproach to getting it together and seeing what sticks, aswell as bagful of great songs, and endearing personalities, are the reasons audiences have taken to them soenthusiastically.Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Tues 22 March. SOLD OUT

MUSICJEFF HEMMINGS

Full disclosure: I sing in the Brighton Orpheus Choir. Ihave never sung in a choir before and it’s been great

fun; there is something special about becoming part of aglorious, magisterial whole: a powerful combination ofvoices. Singing in a choir is spiritually, intellectually, physically and musically invigorating, and I cannotrecommend it highly enough.

This Saturday we are singing Bach’s St John Passion. Thechorus plays crowds, soliders, and priests and also passescomment on the story outside the action in chorales. Thepiece is thrilling, with the dramatic story of Christ'scrucifixion told in complex interweaving choral parts.

The ‘Sleep well...’ movement at the end is a highlight tolisten out for, slowing the pace down for melancholicruminations anddeep, richharmonies. TheBOC will bejoined byprofessionalsoloists NicolasChisholm, Nicholas Warden, Shona Knight, Corinne Hulland Rory Green, as well as the Musicians of All Saintsorchestra and guest players.

Students can go for £6 and under 17s for free, so this is agreat opportunity for a newcomer to enter the stunningworld of classical music. I'm always moved when hearingchoral music in churches; the sublime architecture andacoustics lend a sense of grandeur and transcendence toperformances. The St John Passion is overwhelminglybeautiful enough for the secularist, the religious, or thetheistically indifferent to enjoy on a purely musical level. UB40 are performing at The Brighton Centre on May3rd despite the highly publicised, bitter '2B40' row

surrounding usage rights of the band name. They Formed in1979 with Ali Campbell at the helm and were pivotal indefining reggae for a generation. The band dominated themusic charts, selling 70 million albums worldwide duringthe ‘80s and ‘90s. Their national treasure status stillendures in the hearts of many, so how did it all go wrong?

Ali Campbell and Mickey Virtue quit the band in 2008,followed by Terence'Astro' Wilson in2013. At the time hecomplained that theband had become a'rudderless ship'saying his heartwasn't in the mostrecent album'Getting Over The Storm'. Speaking to The Mirrorsubsequent to his departure he said: “I cannot bear to seewhat we are offering to our loyal fans who have stood byus through thick and thin. I think it’s clear that I’ve hadenough of being depressed, as I’m sure other members are,but the difference is I’m not prepared to continue to bemiserable at home and work.”

The other 'UB40' are original members Robin andDuncan Campbell, (Ali's brothers) Jimmy Brown, NormanHassan, Brian Travers and Earl Falconer, who claim that AliCampbell et al have no right to use the name, accused

them of being a tribute band. In 2014 Robin, guitarist andvocalist reportedly said: “Ali is selling tickets as UB40 whenhe isn’t. He’s taken our name because he can’t sell ticketson his own. They are perfectly entitled to play any UB40tracks they like. What they are not entitled to do is topretend they are UB40.”

Ali is no longer on speaking terms with his brothers, andhit back saying: “Prior to me leaving, when it was fallingapart, Duncan said to me: ‘Stop singing, do your own thingand that way you’ll get what you’re entitled to.’ But when Ileft, I found out Duncan had joined the band in my place. Iwas furious. If you went to see The Rolling Stones andDerek Jagger turned up instead of Mick you’d feel a bitpeeved.”

Writs were served by the other UB40 to Ali, Mickey andAstro and a high court battle will now ensue. Latest 7 spoketo Mickey Virtue to get the low down.

How would you respond to the 'tribute band' jibes madeby the other UB40?When our fans come to our gigs they want to hear all ofthe old classics and they want to hear Ali singing them – it'sas simple as that. The songs are not the same if Ali isn’tsinging them. To call us the tribute band is ridiculous!

What will you playing at the gig in May?We will be performing all of the classics from the ‘LabourOf Love’ album with heavy sprinkles of our other material.

How does it feel to be touring together again? The last time was in 2008 and to be honest nothing has

“ To call us the tributeband is ridiculous! ”

changed for us. We are a band of brothers, it's always reallyeasy when we're together. We still get an amazing reactionfrom the fans wherever we go, the atmosphere is alwayselectric.

You're coming to Brighton in May, what do you think ofour city? We've been coming to Brighton since 1980, so we're reallyfamiliar with the city. I love the diversity, both with thepeople and musically. There’s something for everyone. Theshows are always really great, in fact every show we’ve everdone in Brighton has been amazing. There is so much loveand support from the fans, so we are looking forward tocoming down!

Who were your musical inspirations growing up?I grew up in the ‘60s, so there was so much great musicaround at that time, lots of pioneering artists. In particular Iloved Bob Marley and The Beatles.

What music to do you listen to now?Everything! I've got really eclectic taste, I think it's good tolisten to everything and not limit yourself. Reggae isobviously my first love, there's loads of fantastic musiccoming out of Jamaica right now, which I love.

What's the best advice anyone ever gave you? Don't get drunk before a gig – I listened and so far it'sworked out well for me. After the show? Now that’s adifferent story! www.brightoncentre.co.uk
