England by MC BuzzEngland's all time

From the vaults of Great Britain, comes the greatest of all timeEngland's all time 11, put into a compact rhymeAnd first of all we got Banks in goal, Gordon Banks was the man who withstood them all and in defence centre back just to be exact

We got our own Gary Cahill to represent thatAlongside Jackie Charlton who comes from way backAnd a real tough player that can play any flankLeft and right well that was closeSo I went with Gary Neville and Danny Rose

In midfield I had Beckham of course and on either side of him I kept a real strong forceI had Charlton again and his first nameBobby! And on the other side I had Paul Gasoigne onnit!!

So when my strikes squad were ready, I was ready to name themI had so many options to enter the game denThen it struck me? Who's the greatest player of all time...So I had Geoff Hurst as the striker for prime timeAnd on either side to deliver the balls right

I had John Barnes and I had Ian WrightStrikers in their own right but who could stop?John Barnes, Ian Wright and of course Geoff HurstSo there's my all time England 11

Now have your pick of the greatest team playerSince 66 I know I left out Moore, Keegan, Lineker, but can't pick em allSo now I'm gonna leave you with the team on the grid and watchEngland's all time 11 as they take to the pitch

Withdean Park DogWalking Community,

are looking for volunteers tohelp rebuild the fences at thepuppy park.

Close to 2,000 local peoplesigned a petition to supportthe rebuilding of the gates

and fences in March this year. The Council unanimously

agreed that the fence wouldremain if the group couldorganise both themaintenance work and raisethe necessary funds.

Community work to retainthe fencing started in May.Two of the most populargates have now been replaced(top central and bottom left asyou look up the hill). Theywere paid for by individualdonors, after a strongJustGiving campaign, whichcomfortably exceeded its£1,200 target within 30 days.

The next work day will startat 10am, on Sunday 26 June,

and will finish by lunchtime(1pm). Participants don't needany particular skills just abasic level of fitness. Toolsand techniques will beexplained by the ranger. Getdown there and show yoursupport!@savewithdeanparkfenceFacebook search WithdeanPark Dog Walking Community

Anew andmysterious

addition has recently arrived onBrighton seafront, in the form of threelevitating men, who appear to bebalancing onfootballs! The clever‘floating man’ opticalillusion, has beenseen in cities all overthe world and whileit certainly looksimpressive, the trickis all a matter ofsimple physics andthe ability to sit still!

ONLY IN BRIGHTON

You’re special. When did that become a doubleedgedsword of a compliment? What with Radiohead singing

how incredibly ‘special’ you are, as well as rosettes being givenout for decades labelled ‘special’ once actual race places inschool sports days had been won... well, it just doesn’t feelthat special to be special anymore.

The Special Olympics does a lot to address this. Theseathletes are incredibly special, just so impressive and aweinspiring. Proper puts my ‘walking instead of taking the bus towork’ minimum fitness efforts into perspective.

But when I am so dumbstruck by the magic of a friend, orthe fabulousness of a day together in good company – and Icall out the word ‘special’ in praise and honour of what I’mfeeling... well, it doesn’t seem to land with my admired peoplequite as I might hope. And I know this from the looks on theirfaces. You know the ones.

I’d like us to make a concerted effort, if it’s not too muchbother, to reclaim the shine of ‘special’. Add it’s sparkle againwith regular nonsarcastic use. Make ‘special’ special again.

Have you ever hit the sales and felt overwhelmed by theamount of bargains, crowds and countless piles of

clothes? You wouldn't be alone.Along with the excitement of finding great items at a

discount price comes the danger of impulse buys. I’m suremost of us are guilty of buying an item at 75% off that is nowgathering dust in the back of your wardrobe, the tags stillintact. Does this sound familiar?

Here are my top tips to ensure that you don’t slip into thebuy now, regret later scenario and you get the most out ofyour shop this summer. It’s all in the prepSorting through your wardrobe is the perfect way to work outwhat you have. You can get a clear idea of what you haveenough of and what items you’re lacking. Make two piles, onefor the charity shop or to sell and the other to keep. Make a listA list will ensure a targeted approach while bargain hunting.Once you've had a sort out, you can narrow down what youwant to look for, whether you want to replace a pair of jeansor invest in a new bag. This will narrow your shop down tospecifics and you will eliminate panic buys.Shop smartAvoid illfitting clothes. Is the garment two sizes too big orsmall? Leave it, the likelihood of you getting the time to alter itis unlikely. What to look out for?Look out for high quality pieces with great fabrics, don't getswayed by the price tag!AccessoriesBags are a great piece to look out for in sales as you can be abit playful and they tend not to date. Classic itemsLook out for timeless pieces and avoid trenddriven items, denim and shoes are always good items to look out for.Olivia is a personal shopper, blogger and fashion designer

Latest TV is proud to announce that we have appointedSophie Cook, as an onscreen newscaster and Head of

Diversity for for Latest TV. This is big news for us, for TV andfor progress, as Sophie Cook is the first ever transgender newsanchor in the UK and Europe.

Latest TV's CEO, Bill Smith, said: “Brighton is an island ofsanity in what can often be seen as an ocean of intolerance.Latest TV brought the first exclusively LGBT show to terrestrialtelevision, Q Tube and now we are appointing Sophie Cook tolead the LGBT TV news revolution!”

Sophie said of her new role: "It's a great honour for me to begiven this opportunity byLatest TV, and is a real stepforward for transgendervisibility and awareness.Brighton and Hove is aunique city, full of amazingdiversity and I'm proud tobe able to reflect this bybringing the news toeveryone in the city onFreeview, channel 7, VirginMedia 159 and across the world throughwww.thelatest.co.uk."

Ex newspaper editor, Premier League football and rockphotographer, former member of the RAF, motorbike racer andsuicide survivor, Sophie Cook hit the headlines in January afterbecoming the first transgender woman to work in the PremierLeague. Last summer, when coming out as transgender to herclub, AFC Bournemouth, Sophie feared that she would loseeverything. The club and the fans were very supportive and now Sophiespeaks at conferences nationwide, including Wembley Stadiumabout these fears and how she overcame them.

Sophie is currently making a documentary about footballversus homophobia, for Latest TV – coming soon!

One of the most glamorous people I know is MissAlternative Brighton, Stephanie Starlet. Stephanie was

probably one of the first friends I made when I moved toBrighton. She's a familiar face on Brighton's club scene andrecently appeared on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks.

Are you performing at Brighton Pride this year?Well all the details aren't confirmed just yet. But what I doknow is that I will be Djing at the Funky Fish for two nightsover Pride. I can't wait, it's going to be fabulous!

Have you got any otherprojects in the pipeline?Yes, I'm so excited, I've got anew club night at Subline, on StJames Street, starting soon. It'sa mixed night and I'll be playinga mix of pop and 80's music. It'sgoing to be a really fun night.I'm also busy working on mymusic projects too. You can listen on Soundcloud: 'The StarletFoundation'.

You were on Hollyoaks recently, how was that? All the cast were so lovely and so down to Earth. It was filmedat Lime Studios in Liverpool, which was actually the buildingfor the kids’ show Grange Hill! I'll be back in the show againsoon, which I'm really looking forward to. I loved working withTamara Hall (aka Grace Black), on Hollyoaks – she's such anice girl.

You were also in the iconic film Kinky Boots...That's right. We filmed for three days in Soho. It was a greatexperience and it's wonderful to be in such a great film.www.soundcloud.com/the starletfoundation

So it’s Greg’s birthday and both Peyton and I are invitedalong with a lot of our friends. This is the first time I’ve met

with them both socially. They both know about each other andthe whole situation is actually quite civilised.

Peyton knows that Greg likes me and has some suspicionthat I might be interested in him. He even keeps egging me onto ask him out which doesn’t settle well with me evenconsidering ourarrangement.

Greg knows that I spenda lot of time with Peytonand that I stay over at hisand is actually quite okaywith it and doesn’t stopflirting with me. Greg asksme questions about it all.Like, how are you two? What are you? When Ianswer as best as I can he always seems okay with it, I guessthis is 21st century dating.

So while I’ve been invited here to celebrate one of the guy’sbirthdays, I turned up with the other. Peyton didn’t really knowanyone, so I said I would go with him since his place was onthe way anyway. At the bar it was all civil and Greg bought around, nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn’t until Peyton had alittle too many drinks and started being affectionate when Iknew something was up.

When I asked Peyton: “What on earth are you doing?” hejust said: “I think we would actually be good together”.I knew it was too good to be true. It wasn’t until then that Iknew I didn’t want to date him properly. It was as if when I gotclose to acting on emotions, that I knew I just couldn’t do it. Itwasn’t what I signed up for.

In a drunken stupor he walked home alone and I stayed outwith the others. I wasn’t going to let him ruin my night and hecertainly didn’t.

Ifound myself watching the highlights of the trooping of thecolour a few weeks ago, an odd thing to do as I have little time

for the royal family on the whole, nor of the military. I have to saythough that it was fascinating to watch, the precision, theuniforms and above all the quality of the military bands, that is ofcourse excepting the pipe bands. I have a hatred of bagpipes thatborders on racism.

There she was, 90 yearsold and on her feet for farlonger than I would chooseto be, putting on a rather agood show despite wearingthe most green outfit.Perhaps the regal equivalentof a hivis jacket. It really worked, noone was going to miss her.

This element of royal tradition is extraordinary but it did makeme wonder if we are really making the most of it. I am confidentthat the pomp and pageantry that surrounds the royal family is amassive draw for tourism – but could we be doing more?

Perhaps we should look at selling a franchise of the whole to abig entertainment organisation, something on a global scale likeDisney, I mean look at their successes. Can you see it? DisneyWindsor? Daily tours, trains loaded with tourists clicking away.HRH looky likies on the corners doing the wave? Buy your ownknighthood (or perhaps that already exists).

Just imagine the merchandising opportunities, the icecreamsales, the ticket revenues… Of course I am jesting, howundignified would that be, would the world buy into it? Wouldtourists pose for a selfie with an imitation Prince Philip? I suspectnot, despite the fact that for years and years people have donethe same with a human in a fake fur Mickey Mouse costume.

I would be the first to admit that the Queen works harder thanyour average 70 year old let alone 90 year old and yes, she doeshave lots of privilege and luxury. But maybe at 90 she should betaking things easier, enjoying her horses and making the kidsreally pull their weight.

“ Perhaps the regalequivalent of ahivis jacket ”

With a restaurant scene here in Brightonthat is riding the crest of a fabulous wave

of cutting edge cuisine, we are often spoiled forchoice when it comes to dining out. Stylishmodern cuisine is one thing and I love it, butthere are moments when I want something else.Breeze is an ideal option. So by'something else' what do I mean?Well what I really mean is arestaurant with a simple menu, starters, mains and puddings anda menu that will deliver threesatisfying plates of food andsatisfy an appetite. What I want in addition is akitchen that cares about those dishes and theproduce that they use. Breeze does just that. It'sthe sort of place that you can get a satisfyingmeal, a well cooked meal and at a sensible price.

I was joined for dinner by Mr S who has arespectably good appetite and I felt confidentthat it would be satisfied. He started byordering the beetroot risotto balls. When theyarrived he looked on in amazement at the sizeof the portion, but he made light work of themand the cheesy sauce. Having been before Ichose the chilli squid which was as tender asone might hope and bathed in a chilli saucewith just the right amount of attitude. I likechilli but not when it damages your palate tothe detriment of the rest of your meal.

Mr S moved on to a plate of pork belly whichcame with kale, apple puree and chorizo mash. How many of you have ordered belly pork in a

restaurant and been presented with a tiny slabof meat. Not at Breeze, by other venue'sstandards this was a roast for four, really, itwas very large and came with incredible crispcrackling. Mr L of course made steady progressas he cleared his plate.

I chose the roast free range chicken whichwas equally generous and came on a bed ofstewed lentils with red pepper, sweet potatoand chorizo and all topped with crispy kale. Itwas a great twist on a classic combination, unctuous and very satisfying. The chickensupreme would have quite easily fed two very

well indeed.By now you might be

getting that Breeze'sfood is both well madeand satisfying, a greatplace for a heartyappetite. And on that

note we should have stopped, but in theinterest of my readers I pushed Mr S to have apudding, a very good apple crumble with icecream and I had a well made creme bruleewith cranberries.

To drink we started with Aperol Spritz then abottle of house red, very good, and finishedwith two piping hot espressos. Breeze looksgood, is ideal for large parties and is verysensibly priced. The service is excellent too, efficient and friendly. Over the last ten yearsBreeze has come very highly recommended bythe kids who take over my review pages eachsummer, but I would say that whilst obviouslybeing a great family restaurant, it is a goodplace for us grown ups to go when we want acomforting dining experience.Breeze, 98 Trafalgar Street, Brighton BN1 4ER01273 693377breezebrasserie.co.uk

> Country Ways – Carlene Carter/MidnightUnion Band/Carter Sampson

Brighton is somewhat a home from home for all thingscountry, roots and americana and here are some treats in

store the next couple of weeks.A third generation member of the Carter family, Carlene

Carter has been up onstagesince the age of four. Hergrandmother was MaybelleCarter, her mother JuneCarter (who married andperformed with JohnnyCash for most of her life)and with her and her aunts,Helen and Anita, they wereThe Carter Sisters. Now 60, she has a long history of hitwriting and critically acclaimed albums that span country, rockand americana. Her new album ‘Carter Girl’ is a brilliantcountry/roots/rock'n'roll affair that showcases what a talentshe still is, one who has never been in the shadows of hermore illustrious mother and stepfather. The album featurescontributions from Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.

Of a more contemporary hue, there's a fine double bill at theend of month featuring Carter Sampson (The 'Queen ofOklahoma') and Midnight Union Band. Sampson also has anillustrious family member in the form of Roy Orbison, butagain she has talent in abundance as can be heard on herrecently released fourth fulllength album, ‘Wilder Side’, a bigsounding countryrock album that speaks of the open roadand human emotions. Headlining is the newish Irishamericanafolkrootsrock outfit Midnight Union Band, a bandwho deliver a mix of heartfelt love songs and politicallycharged convictions, and whose brilliant debut album ‘Of Lifeand Lesser Evils’ was released in 2014.Carlene Carter, Thurs 23 June, Con Club, Lewes, 7pm,£16/Midnight Union Band & Carter Sampson, Wed 29 June,Prince Albert, Brighton, 8pm, £8

Last week I previewed some classical highlights from theCrossing Borders festival and this week I present a further

selection of what’s on offer. The festival is musically strong(and ethically comforting in these disturbing, confrontationaltimes) so I wanted to againhighlight the cultural riches thatopen borders can bring us.

There are some brilliantaffordable options, including adouble bill of Jali Burama Mbye(the ‘Kora King’) with HerbieFlowers (double bass) followedby Kurdish singer Suna Alan withGroup Raye showcasing music from Gambia to Mesopotamiaand Anatolia. (Latest Music Bar, Tues 21 June, 8pm, £8).

There’s also a world music singing workshop with JudithSilver: all are welcome and no previous experience isnecessary so it’s a unique chance to try out a different form ofsinging. (Latest Music Bar, Wed 22 June, 6pm, £3)

Jazz singers/broadcasters Ian Shaw and Claire Martin arejoined by Alice Russell and Natureboy to present some musicwith a local flavour in a packed show at The Old Market.Grupo Lokito will follow: a contemporary fusion of Congoleseand Cuban music, which sees guitars, rhythmic grooves andkeyboards combine to danceable effect.(The Old Market, Thurs 23 June, 8pm, £15)

Jali Fily Cissokho is a fantastic Senegalese kora player whocrosses musical boundaries himself: check out his recentperformance at Wood Festival on YouTube for a taste of hisvibrant, rockinflected tunes. The evening will also feature ashowing of the live enigmatic music/theatre project called DrSpira, which promises to be a “strange brew of music withechoes of punk, jazz, rock and blues”.(The Old Market, Fri 24 June, 8pm, £15)www.crossingbordersfestival.co.uk

COMEDYVICTORIA NANGLE

Many years ago DanielleWard was the

marvellously twistedmastermind behind cultmusicals Psister Psycho andGutted: A RevengersTragedy – both loved byanyone who caught them fortheir all too short runs, due tobeing jampacked withtalented comedians as castmembers (who elseremembers Sara Pascoe asthe slowwitted housemaid inGutted?). Now Ward iscreating new brilliantensemble pieces with her

comedy horror podcast ofsketches, songs and stories, again combining her ownsmart and dark comedy withsome very talented friends. This isSpookywookycocktailhour.

Recorded live, and thismonth joined by her Gutted

star Colin Hoult – whoplayed every one of the half adozen malevolent familyvictims – with his owncreations; as well as cocreator of both Psister Psychoand Gutted – the talentedMartin White; and also AnnaCrilly, as seen in Lead Balloonand Anna and Katy.

In short, you’re in for a truetreat of comedy from anawardwinning cast, workingto a devilmaycare format.What a delight!Danielle Ward & Friends,Caroline Of Brunswick, Tuesday21 June, 7.45pm, £7/5

BRIGHTON’S ARTY

We love a good moocharound an openair art

market – and there’s a realfestival feel to Brighton’snewest venue in theBrighthelm communitygardens. So head there thisSaturday 25 June for an artfest and so much more.

The advantage of beingoutdoors means that as wellas an eclectic display ofcreativity and the opportunityto buy direct from the artists, you can also look forward tobeing entertained by liveperformances. So far BAM!(Brighton Art Market) has

hosted a circus skills troupe, live music, Punch & Judy andmuch more. There’s a cafearea, too, so plenty of reasonsto while away a few hours inthe sunshine (hopefully!). Ifyou can’t make this month’sBAM!, the next event will be30 July.www.artymagazines.com
