Sports has never really been my bag. There, I’ve said it. Withlimbs that grew too fast and then flailed about on the schoolfield, hardly ever coming into contact with anything they weresupposed to (like catching a rounders

ball or kicking a football), I soon realised thatthe most prized position I could ever hope toreach in a sports team was ‘intimidatinggoalkeeper’ in netball. And I wasn’t evenparticularly good at that, as despite my in-excess-of-six-foot-frame by the time thesecond half of the game came around theother team would have sussed out that Icouldn’t mark for toffee.

Since those early scarring childhoodattempts at exercise I have found that thesimplest way for me to stay fit is with acombination of walking absolutely everywhere, and ‘frolicking’ – whichis to say playing in the sea, climbing trees, and assorted other activitiesup to and including wrestling for the remote control.

Watching sports is a bit more of a laissez-faire thang for me. I don’tlike the jingoistic fanaticism that can take over, but put me in a pubwith a big screen and a group of pals and I’ll be on the edge of my seatin no time, sucking in my breath at the near-misses and shouting reliefat points, goals and new world records.

I even managed to get tickets to go along to the WimbledonChampionships this year. It’s a bit of a lottery as to what days andcourts you get, and that works well as a leveller. People go along for thetennis rather than as fan-boys and -girls for specific players meaningthere’s less fanaticism and more general appreciation for everyone witha racquet on the courts. Bonza!

Plus there’s the whole Wimbledon experience. A Pimm’s? Don’t mindif I do. And I’ll walk the calories off on my way back to the station.Lovely jubbly.

The best way to get between Brighton, Newhaven, Seaford andEastbourne is the Coaster (whether for work, shopping or anevening in Brighton), the last bus back isn’t until after 11pmall week. It’s also a fantastic way to get out and about in the

fresh air and enjoy what is probably the finest coastal scenery in thesouth east. Whether it’s a gentle stroll or an invigorating walk, thereare spectacular views everywhere. And you don’t have to retrace yoursteps, catch another bus further along! Or just sit upstairs and watchall that magnificent scenery from the comfort of your bus seat.

Smart, stylish, comfortable, eco-friendly double-deck buses run upto every 10 minutes Mondays to Saturdays, every 15 minutes onSundays. For a faster journey use the 12X buses, which are limitedstop between Brighton and Seaford, every 30 minutes on Mondays toSaturdays. New buses on the route are fitted with Free WiFi.

They have wide doors with a stepfree entrance, a level floordownstairs and fabulous views from the big picture windows upstairs. We should all be using our cars less, particularly when there is a goodalternative. Add in parking problems and cost, and you can see thatgoing by Coaster makes sense.

Between Seaford and Eastbourne the views are spectacular, andthere are plenty of things to see and do to enjoy a great day out in thismagnificent corner of Sussex.

Seven Sisters Visitors’ Centre is a good start to finding out about thearea. They can advise you of the best walks to suit your interests, ability and how much time to allow. And there’s a marvellous café!

HOW TO GETTHERE:Catch Coaster 12 to theSeven Sisters CountryPark. The bus drops off atthe Park Centre.

We won the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)club of the year award recently and an award for the StarburstElements Electronic project at the Big Bang Fair. The Big BangFair is an event held every year at the South of England

Showground and it is superbly organised by STEM Sussex. Somethingthat really shone through during the judging was the children’s passionfor their projects. The children have been working really hard duringtheir lunchtime and afterschool clubs in order to get them finished.

When people come through our TARDIS doorway into the STEM centremost people have the sameinitial reaction – wow! Parentssay that it makes them want tocome back to school. We haveturtles, a Galaxy Pod Ant Farmand an incubator with quaileggs in that will hatch out anyday now. We then have ourarray of telescopes, our 3Dprinter, our Raspberry Pi’s andArduino’s plus electricpowered vehicles and swampboats. Also not forgetting ourNatural Cosmetic Beautyrange with glass fusing plusthe Starburst ElementsPeriodic Table project.

Recently visiting our STEMcentre were students andteachers from Darwen AldridgeAcademy. The Vice Principleasked me, “but how do youmeasure the effectiveness of itand what about exams and asyllabus?” My reply was, “wellwe don’t; that is the point! Weare tapping into children’s(and adult’s so it seems)natural curiosity for the world around them”.The only thing I’m keen to measure isengagement and has it re-lit a human desireto discover and find out more?

I just don’t understand where the drive hascome from to measure and analyse everyaspect of a child’s schooling. It certainlywasn’t the case in my day. In the educationsector’s eyes, if it can’t be measured andjustified then it clearly can’t be a good thing. We are talking about developing humanbeings here, not robots or a product from theend of a factory line.

Data collection has gone crazy in Britain. Idon’t think there is any other nation that tests and analyses data onschool children quite like we do. So who exactly is driving this mass datacollection agenda and what are we actually doing it for? Our wellqualified schoolchildren are less creative and less equipped for enteringthe workplace than ever before. I’ll just take a wild stab in the dark butmaybe there is a correlation between how we are now teaching ourschoolchildren to effectively pass tests rather than developing a richunderstanding of the world they live in.

If evidence is needed then here you go… at a recent STEM lesson wehad a very shy year 10 girl who is in the bottom set for science absolutelysmash the top set at a STEM challenge. The challenge was to see howmany beads could be raised within a polystyrene cup by building a windturbine. Most were managing around 3-6 beads, her wind turbinemechanism lifted 38!

Agatha Christie’s most popular thriller comes toTheatre Royal Brighton

And Then There Were None is the world’s best selling mystery ever, with 100 million copies sold to date. On its publication in 1939, onenational newspaper considered it one of “the most genuinelybewildering Christie yet written”, while another commented:

“Christie stands in a class of her own. No one else in the world would haveattempted to manipulate a plot like that. To show her utter superiorityover our deductive faculty, Mrs Christie even allows us to know what everycharacter present is thinking and we still can’t guess!”.

Encouraged by the response to the novel, Christie then wrote her ownstage adaptation. The dark and captivating tale thrills and enthrals, as

murder unfolds… A group of 10 strangers is lured to a remote island off thecoast of Devon. Upon arrival it is discovered that their host,

an eccentric millionaire, is missing. At dinner a recordedmessage is played accusing each of them in turn of having

a guilty secret and by the end of the evening the 10guests become nine. Stranded on the

island by a torrential storm andhaunted by an ancient

nursery rhyme, one byone the guests

begin to die.And with onlythe fallenbelieved tobe innocent,

who amongstthem is the

killer?

The all star cast includes WestEnd and TV star Paul Nicholas(Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, JustGood Friends) as judge SirLawrence Wargrave. He is joinedby Colin Buchanan (Dalziel andPascoe, Dangerous Corner) in therole of retired police inspectorWilliam Henry Blore, with SusanPenhaligon (Bouquet of BarbedWire, A Fine Romance), aseccentric spinster Emily Brent,Mark Curry (Blue Peter, TheWoman in Black, Charley’s Aunt) asDr Armstrong, Verity Rushworth(Emmerdale) as Vera Claythorne,Frazer Hines(Doctor Who,Emmerdale) asRogers and BenNealon (SoldierSoldier, Doctors) asPhilip Lombard.

Over twenty years ago Iwent away on myholidays only to returnto find that my lodger

had committed a murder in mykitchen. Don’t get over excited, ina fit of domesticity he had decidedto defrost the deep freeze – usingmy favourite kitchen knife – andhad punctured the vital organsand rendered it dead.

He was beside himself withremorse and when it came to mybirthday that year he went crazyand bought me a juicer, a reallypucker model with a massivemotor that would juice hardvegetables, not just soft fruits. Iloved that beast and it became afirm favourite – at the weekends.

To be honest it was such a faffto clean the parts that I only hadtime at the weekends. A few yearsback it finally died after a goodand long service. Sad as I was I didnot miss the cleaning of that fiddlymicro-blade that did the job, nordid I miss the huge amount offibrous pulp that it threw out. Itwas okay when I had a garden anda compost bin, but when I movedto a gardenless flat it just createda mountain of compost thatattracted all kinds of bugs.

A few weeks back I was offereda device called a Nutribullet. Itpromised to reduce almostanything to juice without creating

the fibrous waste – and it was easyto clean. Why not I thought, and afew days later it was delivered.

That night I read the book anddigested the contents, appropriately as this, it wouldseem, was to be very much aboutdigestion. I did not however use itas that night, like Old MotherHubbard, my cupboard was bare.

The very next day, after leavingthe office, I trundled off to fill mybag with fresh fruits andvegetables. I bought spinach andbroccoli, nectarines, herbs, applesand carrots. I added some freshchillies and ginger and a pile ofcitrus fruits too. I got home anddecided to give it a whirl. Wellwhirl is hardly fitting as the engineis pretty fierce and it is easy to seewhy the blades beat everythinginto a smooth submission. I madea mix of orange, carrot, nectarineand ginger. Whizz, pour, devour. Itwas delicious and as promised thegoblet and blade rinsed so easilyunder the tap. Follow me: latestandrew

The drink was good, heartyeven and I soon realised that thelarge goblet was certainly toomuch for one and moved to thesmaller cup provided.

The next morning I made onewith broccoli and fruit and addedherbs and lemon juice. It wascertainly a filling start to the day, perhaps a little too large still as Ihad some left which I sealed andrefrigerated – not great as even inthe enclosed cup it oxidised andwent bitter. A lesson learned, fresh is best with this device –although since I have made anexcellent lemon concentrate thatkeeps well and diluted in sparkingwater is delicious.

Week one I was vigilant, ahealthy mix of fruits and veg everymorning had me feeling good, despite a rotten summer cold, andI even lost weight – around 8lbs –which was useful as my DJ wasgetting a tad snug and I hadoccasion to wear it that Sunday.

Week two went equally well, and I was really getting into aroutine. My Nutribullet was mynew bezzy mate and myevangelistic fervour spread, threefriends on my recommendationwent out and bought one.

Thus far my Nutribullet was ahealthy change in my life. Then Ifell off the wagon, well not quite. Irealised that I could use it tomake rather impressive cocktailstoo. First a stunning frozenmarguerita, the beast crushes icewith no effort and it certainly getsthe most out of those limes – butdo wash them first and try to getunwaxed. And yes, I did put themin – skin, pith and all.

Next I made a frozen strawberrydaquiri with basil leaves and blackpepper, I know, so sophisticated. Ido advise that you use a spiritmeasure when doing this as it isall too easy to go mad with thebooze.

I still have the juice in themornings, apple carrot and gingertoday. Cocktails are a weekendtreat, as is a bacon sandwich onSunday. Well I’m no saint.£99.99www.highstreettv.com

It’s thirty years since I first cameto live in Brighton & Hove. Backthen I was a commuter andmuch as I loved living here I

found that the culinary scene wassomewhat wanting. Okay, I knowthere were a few gems dotted about, but amongst the over 300restaurants they were fairly sparse. That said, in comparison to the retailfood scene back then the restaurantwas positively marvellous. Iremember well lumbering mygroceries back from Soho on analmost daily basis.

How times change, now Brightonis one of the most happening placeson the UK food scene and, given thesize of the city, we are lucky to havea remarkable number of first classplaces to eat, at almost every leveland of course price point.

This was certainly highlighted afew weeks back when the resultswere published for Britain’s Top 100Restaurants. The NationalRestaurant Awards are the resultsof the votes of 150 industry experts, spread across all regions of the UK.You cannot, therefore, enter theawards. The academy of voters ismade up of chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and critics and otherfood experts and gastronomes.

Each voter casts seven votes, based on their best restaurantexperiences over the previous 12months. They must vote for somerestaurants outside of their ‘home'region, as well as a number withinit and they list their votes in orderof preference. Other than that, there are no set criteria - aside fromthe proviso that they have eaten inthe restaurants for which they voteduring the period in question.

Therefore, any type of restaurantin any UK location, serving anycuisine in any style is potentiallyeligible for inclusion in the list.

Restaurant magazine simply add upthe votes to create the list. In theevent of a tied number of votes, thepreference ‘weighting’ comes intoplay.

Given these criteria the followingrestaurants should be extremelyproud of their achievements this year.

Michael Bremner and hisamazing team at 64 Degrees came

in at number 24, a brilliant result forthis astonishing venue thatcontinues to delight and surpriseguests with their inventive dishesand the simplicity of the concept. To come in the top 25 of this 100strong list is tribute to the hard

Alun and Dawn Sperring haveworked very hard to raise the profileof regional Indian cuisine in the UKfor ten years now. Chilli Pickle goesfrom strength to strength and notonly have they won this accoladebut they have raised their game byleaping up the chart from 55 in 2014to 42 this year. They add this to afine list of awards and trophies thatalso saw them crowned top take-away at the National Curry Awards.

It would be mean spirited not toraise a hat to chef Matt Gillan andhis team at The Pass at South LodgeHotel in Lower Beeding. Matt is anextraordinary talent, his menus

Recently on PostFeature we looked at the lost world of the Britishsitcom spin-off film with a review of 1971’s Dad’s Army: TheMovie. Cinematic spin-offs of popular wireless programmes firstappeared in the 1930s with Band Wagon although they remained

a rarity. Even after Hammer Horror adapted BBC classic The QuatermassExperiment for the cinema in 1953, there was a slow take-up. The Larkinswas released on the big screen as Inn for Trouble in 1959 and Whack-O!,the BBC sitcom about aheadmaster obsessedwith caning his pupilswas made into 1960’sBottoms Up – thehumour remainingresolutely ‘British camp’,clearly!

These filmadaptations were, atthis time, star vehiclesfor comedians andcomic actors, much asthe TV showsthemselves had been. However, thecommercial success oftwo mid-60s DoctorWho films toldproducers thataudiences were willingto pay big bucks to seetheir small screenheroes in colour. Theywere also happy to payto see more ‘adult’scenes inserted into thenormally family friendlyworld of primetime viewing. Cinematic versions of sitcoms generallygained much higher ratings from the board of censors than their televisedversions and are all the better for it.

Expanding a sitcom into a feature film is often cheaper to produce; itsfamiliarity to the audience cuts down on the advertising budget and thestories are based around small-room situations, even if the location of theroom changes. For example, Hammer Studio’s three spin-offs fromLondon Weekend Television’s show On The Buses repeated the sameformula but in different locations and created some of the top earners atthe box office in 1972.

However, the very low budgets do create a fascinatingly dismal view ofEngland, shooting in real spaces with gloomy lighting and bleakbackgrounds. Much like The Inbetweeners films, the standard plot devicewas to send the main characters on holiday… but unlike thoseHollywood-financed films, these were to the local Pontins or camping ona desolate hillside! What could be more British?

The greatest benefit of these low-budget blockbusters is that theypreserve once-popular television series’ whose actual shows have beenlost. Amongst the well-regarded and still oft-spoken series such as TheLikely Lads, Porridge and Bless This House are For the Love of Ada andThat’s Your Funeral – shows I certainly hadn’t heard of before researchingthis article! Full disclosure: my mother was in primary school when mostof these were released.

What is your favourite big-screen version of a series? Man About theHouse, Please Sir, Rising Damp? Or are you an Entourage fan who lovedthe new film? Tweet me and let me know. For my review of Dad’s Army(1971) type my name and the title into the YouTube search box to find mychannel and many other reviews of great old films. FROSTS IN JULYBRIGHTON’S ARTY

So what I thought I'd do this week is begin every sentence of mycolumn with the word "so". So why on earth would I do that, you're asking? So wouldn't it make me sound absurd? So wouldn'tit soon become enormously irritating?

So wouldn't you want to march around to Latest HQ and slap me reallyhard? So wouldn't you be frustrated to discover I don't actually workthere, that I just email this column on a weekly basis? So, yes, you would.

So I'm doing it – starting all my sentences with "so", I mean – because, well, it seems to be what everyone's started doing now (well, noteveryone, not my mum, she's 90, but an awful lot of people, and indeed alot of awful people). So I don't want tofeel left out.

So I even heard abloke doing it on thenews the other day,a bloke in an actualsuit and tie, giving areally serious pressconference, butbeginning all his answers with "so". So despite the immense seriousnessof whatever it was he was fielding questions on, not a word of it sank in,not into my own personal brain at least, so distracted had I become by hisridiculous "so" habit.

So what exactly is going on here? So why have people started doingthis? So how come our wonderful, rich language has been reduced to thislemming-speak, where everyone picks up on the same idiotic habit andnobody dares pause for a moment and say, 'So, hold on, guys, why havewe started speaking this way..?' So God knows, you tell me.

So will people learning English, I wonder, be told from now on to startevery sentence with “so”, rather like people who learn German are told tostart every Noun with a capital Letter (my brother actually does thatanyway: he's not German, he's just a buffoon), or all their words in afunny order to put? So it wouldn't surprise me.

So what I'm actually wondering is whether it's started to annoy meeven more than that other thing, where people insist on ending everysentence with a rising inflection? So it sounds like a question?

So I think it's on a par, I really do. So, what with that, plus the otherhabit that thoroughly gets my goat, where numpties constantly use theword "hashtag" in everyday speech, I find myself wanting to scream, orrip my hair out or, better still, rip someone else's hair out, hashtagtheydbloodydeserveit.

So at least I've achieved my objective, mind, of starting every sentenceof this week’s column with "so".

So I know what that's left you thinking now.So what..?

These two plays, Ukimwi andVeils, address the controversialtopics of veiling and HIV/AIDS withhumour and humanity; putting realfaces on these complex and oftenmisunderstood issues. The plays

also explore the bigger picture ofintercultural relations and whethertwo very different cultures can evercome together with respect andmutual understanding.

Veils, the original one-actversion of Coash's highly acclaimedfull-length play of the same name,is set in the weeks just prior to theEgyptian revolution and features anAfrican-American (veiled) Muslim

When aprotest against the banning of veilsat their university erupts into a fullscale anti-government riot, Intisarand Samar are surprised to findthemselves on opposite sides of abitter cultural divide.

The fact that I like comedy in all its formsis no secret, so it feels rathersymmetrical that at a time when BBC3 isbeing moved to an online-only platform

a book of scripts from the 1960s of a classic TVcomedy ‘All Gas And Gaiters’ comes my way.

‘All Gas And Gaiters’ was a contemporary of‘Dad’s Army’ and ‘Steptoe & Son’, actuallyexceeding these classics’ viewing figures butcaught in the great video cull of the BBC oftencited in stories of ‘lost’ episodes of ‘Here’s TheWay To The Holy Grail – No, Really’ and ‘TheTruth About What All Men And Women ReallyWant, In A Nutshell’ (possibly these may havenever been found but you get the gist).

As well as the sweetly entertaining scripts of clerical shenanigans, thatgive you an idea of what could very feasibly be some of the inspirationsfor ‘Father Ted’, what is really engaging are the intros to each episode. The writers, Pauline Devaney and Edwin Apps, were a couple at the time,as well as jobbing actors. No longer together, their emails andcontextualising touch on the good – and the bad – of working for thegood old Beeb in the good old days.

They got six months to write six episodes! Whoa! And Devaney had togive some of her directions through Apps, because older male actorsdidn’t really take well to instructions from a lady. Hmm.

Fast forward to now and it has just been announced that the channelthat was becoming the first stop for innovative breakthrough comedy onmainstream TV is moving to a strictly web-based format. I’m talkingabout BBC3. Champion of Nick Helm, Pappy’s, Funz And Gamez, Gavin &Stacey... loads!

Perhaps we are going backwards. Angela Barnes has just announcedthat she has a brand new BBC Radio show of her very own, and everyyear the hits of the Edinburgh Fringe find their way to Radio 4, from TomWrigglesworth’s letter to Richard Branson to Mark Thomas’ ‘Bravo Figaro’memoire to his father. Perhaps the revolution has come back to theairwaves where it started with The Goons and Round The Horne.

Two current stars of radio comedy – Mark Steel and Nathan Caton – willbe found at the Caroline Of Brunswick next Tuesday with a double headerof Edinburgh previews. With a ticket price of just £8, know that you cansimply tune into iplayer on your way home and listen to more comedygold from these two. It’s all there. Until they decide they need the tape, ofcourse, and it drifts into legend. All Gas & Gaiters – www.durpey-allen.co.ukwww.carolineofbrunswick.co.uk

Well it'sback as a live theatre show madefor around £3.68. Very much atongue-in-cheek pastiche of theoriginal, albeit with an obviousamount of love/respect for theshow but able to wallow in someof its absurdity. As close to a pantofor kids nearing 40 as you can get.The props are awful, the setdilapidated, however that is part ofthe show's charm and it is side-splittingly funny. It started with MichaelMcGlynn’s evocative arrangementof the ancient ‘Media vita’ chantwith fauxbourdon and drum, beautifully sung by LawrenceDean. Then followed elaboratepolyphonic versions from 16thcentury by Sheppard and Gombert,a richly harmonised Bach Chorale, and a brightly heroic hymn fromMendelssohn. The programmeended with Purcell’s glorious‘Funeral Sentences’ which includethe same text. Magically, the clockof St George’s chimed over the lastchord.
