The last time I tried to makemy own jewellery, I was a bitambitious – the resultingnecklace came apart during

an enthusiastic drinks order in arestaurant, and my wildgesticulation flung the pieces intothe bread bowl of the family sittingnext to us. They were veryunderstanding. But that’s the lasttime I use my teeth instead of pliarsto tighten fiddly jewellery clasps.

This is why I am so in awe of events like theBrighton Craft Fair, which showcases a bountyof handmade pieces from local jewellers andcraftspeople – I’ll try to contain my envy at their skills, and just pick myself up somethingnice at this year’s event. For more on what’slined up, see page 19.

The Brighton Art Fair also visits the BrightonDome Corn Exchange this September, so if

THE COPPER COLLECTIVE

A group of eight youth organisations, collectively called The Brightonand Hove Youth Collective, launched their fundraising campaign thisweek, creatively titled ‘The Copper Collective’.

They are asking everyone in Brighton and Hove to collect up alltheir copper coins from around the house, office, car, shop or gardenshed, bag them up and then hand them in to venues who arehelping to collect across the city.

It is hoped that over the next few months, The BHYC will havecollected in most of Brighton and Hove's errant copper coins. Themoney can then be put towards the worthwhile activities andservices that help support young people across the city. AlthoughThe BHYC do receive central funding, this only provides basicsupport, and more help is needed. The prospect of a newseafront leisure centre onthe King Alfred site isabout to move another

step closer. Property developersare being invited to take part in abeauty parade with one ofBrighton and Hove’s seafrontpearls as the prize.

At stake is the chance to build agym, sports halls and swimmingpool. The chances are that it willbe a 25-metre pool althoughplenty of people believe that thisis our best chance to have a 50-metre competition pool like the K2in Crawley.

If pools are a potential financialdrain, the reward comes in theform of 400 flats – the enablingdevelopment. The public spacesare paid for from the profits ofnew homes, with high hopes that40% of those homes will be forpoorer people on the councilwaiting list. Inevitably, hundredsof flats – several storeys high – willattract local and vocal opposition.

They will also attract investors. At a developers day lastNovember, 65 people went alongfor 40 organisations as part of 29teams. In the coming months ashortlist of two, three or even four

companies or consortiums is likelyto be drawn up and whittled downuntil a preferred partner is picked.

Among the names in the frameis Cathedral, the company behindthe scheme at the old fruit andveg market on Circus Street,Brighton. The scheme was grantedplanning permission last week.Cathedral is also working with thecouncil on plans for PrestonBarracks in Brighton.

Another potential developer –with strong local roots – is RobStarr, from Hove. After leavingschool he started an insurancebusiness from scratch and turnedit into one of the country’s leading

brokerages. His vision is for anintegrated arts and leisure centreknown as The Lyrics. He has learntfrom others’ mistakes and alreadyshared his plans widely, carryingout considerable earlyconsultation.

This is not the first time thatBrighton and Hove City Councilhas tried to tackle the dilemma ofthe King Alfred. Frank Gehry, thearchitect who designed the widelylauded Guggenheim Museum inBilbao, was involved in the lastattempt, led by local developerKaris. The £300 million schemeincluded more than 700 flats.Planning permission was grantedbut the credit crunch and achanging political climate locallyput paid to the project.

Feelings ran high on both sidesof the debate. The experience maywell have coloured the carefulapproach being taken this time. Across-party group met just over afortnight ago and an update waspresented to the council’sEconomic Development andCulture Committee last week. Some suspect key decisions areunlikely to be finalised this side ofthe elections next May. But thefoundations are being put in place.

A project spec is ready todiscuss with developers. It’s notset in stone. There is still pressurefrom some for an Olympic-sizepool and from others for adestination in keeping with ourseafront string of pearls. To mixmetaphors for a moment, there isa risk that the end result will beneither fish nor fowl.

The council is also aware of theknock-on effects of building 400homes on the site. At one of RobStarr’s consultation events, it wassummed up by one of thoseattending, who said: “Theelephant in the room is transportlinks.” Council officials are taking afresh look at how people movealong the seafront betweenShoreham Harbour and BrightonMarina.

There is at least one moreelephant in the room in the formof school places. Demand will beeven greater if the council HQ atnearby King’s House is convertedinto housing, and hundreds ofhomes in the area around HoveStation are built.

One solution may be to puthousing on the King Alfred siteand build a pool somewhere else –perhaps near the station or on theSackville Trading Estate. It wouldcomplicate the picture and delaythe date on which the first spadehits the ground, but may ensure aprize-winning result.

Eighteenmonths agowe introduced aLeisure Card scheme in the cityto help those on lower incomesaccess our Freedom Leisuresports facilities at a discount.

Since then, almost 1,300people in the Brighton andHove area have signed up totake advantage of the 40%discount on a range ofactivities. The most popularfacilities have been theswimming pools and gyms.

The discount card scheme ismeans-tested and is open topeople who are in receipt ofcertain benefits, includingthose with disabilities andlooking for work. Research hasshown that about a third hadnot previously used leisurecentres at all, but 90% nowvisit at least once a week. Intotal they’ve made over 34,000visits to our six local leisurecentres, which is a huge steptowards better health.

The scheme wouldn’t bepossible without the supportof Freedom Leisure, the socialenterprise that provides theseservices at council-ownedfacilities. Combined with thefree swimming we provide forunder-16s and the multi-million-pound refurbishmentof Withdean Sports Complex, the city has better, moreaffordable sports facilities.

Not only does this improvethe health of the city’s poorestresidents, it also saves the citymoney in the long term byreducing future health costs.

According to the NHS,physical activity helps preventmany common major illnesses –including cutting the risk ofheart disease, stroke, diabetesand cancer by up to 50%.

It’s brilliant to see theLeisure Card scheme workingso well and I encourage allresidents who are eligible to take up this scheme.

Property developers are being invitedto take part in a beauty parade withthe King Alfred as the winner’s prize

There is a study out, trying to figure out “why lesbians tend to be overweight”, and it

is totally misdirected. It isn’tlesbians who tend to be plump, it is good cooks, and who was the best cook ever?

Answer: Your mother. No one in the world made

better macaroni and cheese, orapple pie. When your mum madeyou breakfast, no restaurant couldmatch it, and certainly your dadcouldn’t do much at the stoveexcept for an outdoor barbecue, or one fancy company dish like his famous crab cioppino.

The obvious truth is that it isn’tlesbians who have to fight their weight, it is anyone – male, female, straight or gay – who loves to cook. If you have a way with food, you are going to taste what you create … and those itty-bitty spoonfuls of chocolate custard or Alfredo sauce go straight to the hips.

Look at our own darling, AndrewKay. He has never cooked for me(yet) but he knows good food. He savors the texture, recognises the bouquet of herbs and spices, and respects dramatic cuisine. His silhouette is certainly not angular; it is just round enough.

For my part, I refuse to go to a skinny person’s house for dinner. I am not going to waste a meal onsomeone who doesn’t present each dish with a bit of flair and an eye for flavour. I made that mistake only once. A woman who shall remainnameless, in case she figures out why I am always busy at dinnertimewhen she calls, invited me over for a gala holiday celebration. She wasthe type who spent mornings at the gym, bench-pressing hundreds ofpounds. Afternoons she worked out on the trampoline, and evenings she did Zumba. The truth is I should have known what to expect.

I appeared, wine in hand, with an empty, expectant tummy and whatdid I see? Pizza delivered from the corner shop, pre-sliced mass-producedbread, and instant coffee. I know you won’t believe me, but the onlyspread available was Marmite. There wasn’t even background music to hide the gagging of the guests. I immediately feigned a headache and hustled over to the nearest Waitrose for a gourmet experience.Dinner is a terrible thing to lose … especially if you skipped lunch.

So I am campaigning for people to stop casting negative aspersions on corpulence. Give me someone with a decent amount of curves and a good wiggle to their walk and I will immediately lobby to share a mealwith them. If you are lean, buff and tanned I would not dream of touchingyour soup, much less your flambé cherries jubilee. Show me a comfy,well-padded cheerful person in a flowered apron and I am right there at her dinner table. I promise to bring the wine.

FAT AND THIN

(did I mention that?). Getting theladder in and out of the room is,erm, an experience. No one likesdoing it, but do it they must!

I actually quite enjoy hearingthe ladders coming. It’s like a stampede of crescendoingcrashes; a tidal wave of noise as the ladder ricochets off the wall and clutter, naturallyunderpinned by a healthy array of profanities. It makes for a wonderful soundscape.

We needed the ladder becauseone of the lights on the BrightonLights set was hanging lower thanan assembly of infrequentlywatered fuchsias. A bitter irony for a show titled Brighton ‘Lights’.The only way to remedy such a disastrous issue was to get the ladder out and realign thepoorly thing.

I got the ladder. Made my wayback up. Started to realign. Cameback down. I was scared, dearreaders. But not scared to fall; I was scared I’d drop the light.William, our director, barked at me to get down. He realigned it inseconds. Everyone congratulatedand cheered him. I was told to put the ladder away. Which I did, very loudly. Lights, cameras, ladders away? Action!

“Has anyone seen theladder?” Silence.“Nobody?” More silence. I heard an inaudible

whimper from Gemma, thedutiful runner ... “It’s in thedownstairs cupboard, isn’t it Gemma.” Again, anotherwhimper, this time a little more audible. The answer, as I already knew it would be, was yes.

The downstairs cupboard atthe studio is dark, damp, dingyand of course, scary. Oh yesand it smells weird. Reallyweird. Much like any room thatcontains an amalgamation ofstuff so I can never really figureout what is stored in there.Sometimes paint, sometimescarpets, chairs, lanterns, blow-up dolls, board games, wires, books, toilet seats … the list does go on. Naturally, this is where all the lovelyladders live, in a room that is tricky to navigate whilst also smelling very weird

But at least hear me out on this before I appear in The Argusfor all the wrong reasons. Likemany music fans, I was veryexcited when Kate Bushannounced that she was going to perform live for the first time in 35 years. It was a similar feeling to when Prince announcedhe was playing in a few shedsaround London and David Bowiedecided to release a single, while everyone was asleep.

But I’m not one for sitting onthe internet at 9am and refreshingevery five seconds (unless Freddie Mercury comes back fromthe dead), so I ignored the ticketsgoing on sale and resigned myselfto never seeing her live in mylifetime. It obviously sold out in seconds, as did the extra dates she put on.

Ispend more than half my lifestanding up in front of eitheran audience or a TV camera –and I feel no fear. It was not

always so. For years and years Idreaded having to put myself inthat kind of exposed position; Iwould feel nauseated, sweat andtremble at the very thought of it.School events were a nightmare, Icould do a bit in a school play butnothing with more than a fewlines, or I would freeze. Not sonow. On the contrary ... theproblem is getting me, once I havehit my stride, to shut up.

The fear disappeared when Iwas about 18 and went to ChelseaSchool Of Art. There, I joined amadrigal group. I had always likedsinging and I could read music soit seemed like an ideal way tomeet people.

Pretty soon I could warble myway with the best of them;Dowland, Byrd,Palestrina, Monteverdi,Mozart, and later onbits of 20th Centurystuff that certainly keptme on my toes.

We didn’t perform as such – anoccassional party with friendsbut little more – but it did kill thefear and when, two years later, Iwon a scholarship, I was able toput that fear firmly to rest.

In those days, Thames Televisiongave out a clutch of travelbursaries and I was lucky enoughto win one. It was enough cash totake me to circus school in Londonand Paris, and there the fear oflooking like a fool was turned intoa love of playing the fool.

I could get up in front ofstrangers and act, as my motherwould describe it, the ‘giddy goat’.I loved it. I loved the make-up andcostumes, I loved the trickery, thesilly gait, the buzz of seeing justhow far you could push things andthe desperate scramble back tosafety and/or dignity when youpushed too far.

much I can get away with. It’s fun,so why not?

Well, there are reasons whynot, as I found out over theweekend. I was on stage onceagain, presenting a live show andhaving fun with my guests andthe audience. In doing so I madethe statement that, as an out-

and-out fatty, I could never bedescribed as being ... well, best not to repeat thereference for fear (once

again) of offending. I hadoffended, though, and I was trulysorry. I had gone a step too farand an apology was required. Irepeat that apology here. I hadnot meant to offend; sincerely notmeant to. It was simply a case ofmouth engaging before brain.

The moment my faux pas hadbeen brought to my attention Iapologised in person, only to betold that my apology was notwanted. I suppose the offendedperson has a right to say that, butit did leave me somewhat adrift ofwhat to do. I was sorry, I am stillsorry – but no amount of mesaying that can actually changewhat happened or what hadcaused the offence.

I apologise that my tactlesshumour, a device that I used totake the mickey out of myself, touched so raw a nerve. In future,I will just describe myself as beinga fatty.

Autumn harvest has to be my favouritefoodie time of the year, and what betterway to celebrate than with three of myfavourite Brighton chefs. Hosted by

Drakes Hotel in their stylish restaurant, westarted the evening with a great G&T made withSarah Thompson’s delicious Sussex BlackdownGin; my kind of a drink every day of the week.

Down in the dining room the guests wereseated at large sociabletables. This was a sharingevent, sharing the joy ofgreat seasonal food, andpretty soon the roomwas buzzing withanimated conversation, only punctuated by thearrival of a clear chickenand vegetableconsomme. Perfection –crystal clear, packed withflavour and a deliciousstart, as were theselection of bread rolls hot from the kitchen.

Chef number one was Rob Carr, a seniormember of the Hotel du Vin Bistro team on aregional basis. He revisited his InternationalChef Exchange starter, this time giving us twoscotch quail’s eggs with a curry mayonnaise. Itwas a hearty start to the evening and one thatwent down extremely well.

Rob’s dish was served with a glass ofRidgeview Fitzrovia presented by Mardi Roberts,a member of the Ridgeview family team. Thisfine sparkler was served to Barack Obama onhis last state visit to the UK, and Ridgeviewwines were served at the Queen’s DiamondJubilee celebrations – hardly surprising, as theywin medals across the globe.

Drakes’ very own chef Andrew MacKenziewas in charge of the main course, and he too

took inspiration from his ICEx dinner with amain course of veal rump and sweetbreadwhich he served with perfect turnips and achanterelle spätzle that had me smacking mylips with pleasure. MacKenzie can always pull itout of the bag, but this dish was exceptional. With this we drank a great red from the RhoneValley presented by Paul Milne of Enotria, arecent sponsor of the food festival.

Onward todessert – this time,it was the turn ofnew star chefMichael Bremner, whose restaurant64 Degrees wasvoted in at number36 in the NationalRestaurant Awardsafter only beingopen for sevenmonths. Not thatany of us were

suprised by this; far from it. Michael and hisamazing team have been stunning us with finedishes since day one, and right now it is one ofthe hottest restaurants, not only here inBrighton but across the South East. Michaelopens his new 64 Degrees in London’s Pimlicothis month, and I wish him the very best of luck.

For dessert he made us a dish inspired by thechef that he swapped with for ICEx – a vanillapanacotta, blood orange and cake confectionthat was delicious. It was an homage to chefBas Oonk of Basaal in Den Haag, and I waslucky enough to have him and his wife Loes atmy table as guests of the festival.

Enotria treated us to a delicious sparklingwhite, this time sweeted with a dosage of icewine, which was an extraorinarily delicious fizzwith a delicate, perfumed sweetness.

Andrew Kaywith

We finished with a platter of fine Sussexcheeses presented by David Deaves of LaCave a Fromage, and a glass of elderberryport, again from Sarah Thompson.

All in all, a stunning meal in good company, each course punctuated with a post-dishinterview with the chef and wine maker, orpresenter. I left deliciously satisfied, if a little tired from my thoroughly enjoyablehosting duties.

Port has the longest‘official’ history of any wine in the world (the

appellation was created in the Douro in 1756) – butis now trying to secure foritself a solid future, too. Anevent organised this year on the appellation’s anniversary date, 10 September, in the city of Porto, marked the inaugural Port Wine Day and certainly got discussions going. The image of port has traditionally been rather stuffy: an after

dinner drink to be enjoyed over cigars, and most particularly byBritish gentlemen. Is it possible for the industry to leverage thattradition, yet embrace modernity? The governing body, Instituto

dos Vinhos do Douro e do Porto (IVDP), believes so. This body says the port

industry has at least fourstrategies underway for adapting to current consumertrends and habits. First, to garner the interest of the younger generation withdelicious cocktails like Portonic,

and to push fashionable rose port. Next, to hit the ultra-premiummarket with beautifully packaged, limited edition bottles. And theindustry is trying to push port as something to have with, rather than after, a meal (in much the same way as we might pair a firstcourse of foie gras with sweet wine). Perhaps the most exciting initiative is in the category of aged

white ports. There’s one category called Old Tawnies, which areclassified at 10, 20, 30 or 40 years old. But now producers such asSymington, Niepoort and Taylor’s are going back into their cellarsand seeking out aged tawnies which may even be more than 100years old – but very affordable.

Hello! How has today been treating you?Very well, thanks for asking. And you?

Also well, thank you.You are renowned for having a curious mind. What was the last thing that made you go;“Ooh, I wonder what’s behind that idea?”There’s an advert for a deodorant, I’m not surewhich one, but the thrust of the ad is that thisdeodorant won’t leave marks on your clothes. Itboasts that it’s been proven to be mark free on 100colours. a) I can’t think of 100 colours, b) it alsosays it’s been tested on 120 colours. So basically,it’s scientifically proven to leave a mark on onein every six colours. And this is their advert!

What’s your favourite website in your‘bookmarks’ list?I don’t have one favourite. I have practical sites that I visit regularly to do practical things but the joy is in alighting on the oddities. Recent favourites include two sites that use a narrow focus on a niche interest as a springboard to great essay writing. Theyare http://withbillyconnolly.tumblr.com/ and http://shatnerstoupee.blogspot.co.uk. One of them seeks to decode what it means to beBritish by examining the celebrities present at a 1985 recording of An Audience With BillyConnolly, and the other studies film and TVthrough the prism of William Shatner’schanging hairpieces. You can probably guesswhich one’s which. Genuinely great, passionatewriting on both of them. And not the cheaplaughs you might expect. Sadly, neither havebeen updated in a while, which is why newthings are always sought ...

What is your favourite word? I ask this in the spirit that my favourite word is ‘whoops’,because it means there’s a story either before or after it that’s intriguing.Quidnunc. I am a quidnunc.

Your latest show involves more PowerPointpresentation work, which you have been usingfor years now. If you could make one requestof Microsoft in the next upgrade of the

application, what magic wandinnovation would you add to it?I wouldn’t add anything to it. I’d take stuffaway. I use it because it’s a simple way ofputting information in front of an audience. All the bells and whistles just make things more complicated and less punchy. Simple is good.

So, I know it’s a boringquestion, but can youplease briefly outline what we can expect fromyour latest show? It’s not that it’s a boringquestion ... it’s just one that nobody wants toanswer. Comedy works bysurprising an audience; byhijacking one thought and turning it intoanother. Telling the audience what they canexpect is a way of ruining that. I suppose youcan tell them the topics that will be discussed, but even that’s useless isn’t it? The funniestthings to me are the topics that sound likethey will be the least promising. There’sno point doing comedy about stuffthat’s obviously funny, as there’snothing for a comedian to add.

So ... am I whittling itdown? I’ll be talkingabout stuff that doesn’tsound like it will befunny. But it will be.In reality, people whoneed moreconvincing than thataren’t exactly mytarget audience.I’ve got a friendwho only readsromance novels. She won’t pickthem up unlessthere’s a man in auniform on thecover. Preferablyriding a horse. The first thing shedoes is read theback page to see ifit’s got a happyending. She won’tread the rest of it ifthere isn’t a happyending. If there’s acomedy-goingequivalent –someone who onlygoes if the posterfeatures a man in atie and there’s apromise of at

Investigative-style comedian Dave Gorman talks toVictoria Nangle about PowerPoint, deodorantstatistics, and William Shatner’s hairpieces

least 12 knob jokes – then I’m probably notfor them.

Any more cycling tours on the horizon, or did the last one put you off cycling for a very long time? It hasn’t put me off cycling. I still cycle as my main way of travelling around town. Butit’s a very impractical way of touring. Ingeneral, I don’t book venues; they book me.Like all performers, I’m a gun for hire and I gowhere the work is. That’s why on most toursyou’ll see someone’s performing in Prestonone night and Aberdeen the next. That’s an impractical way of travelling, but it’s thepractical way of putting a tour together. Butwhen you’re travelling by bicycle, the nextshow has to fall within an 80-mile radius. And sometimes, that limits you to two venues. And sometimes they’re both already booked

up on that night ... and so yougo back and try to change theroute ... and suddenly fiveshows you had pencilled inhave to be cancelled as yourebuild it, heading in aslightly different direction, and it drives you nuts. Thatwe managed to make ithappen at all – I did 30 nightson the bounce, averaging 60miles each

day – is ridiculous enough, thank you.

If you were given an evening a week that had been baggsied to do an evening class – has to be an evening class – what would you

like to spend a year learning?Darts. (I’m not sure there is such

a class, but there could be.)

What are your plans for the next 12 months professionally?Well, a third series of Modern Life Is Goodish has been commissioned.

So I’ll do this tour, take a couple of weeks off over Christmas and

then start on that ... which should be finished around this time next year.

So some fluke has meant that you’ve inherited the old

burned-out pier in Brighton. With money no object, what

would you do with it?I’d regenerate it as a traditional

pier, but use it as a cover for a submarine base – from where

I’d launch attacks on the nation’s other piers.

Thank you lots for your time and I look forward immensely to seeing the show. *big grin* Have a great day.No, no. Thank you. And I lookforward to seeing you. And the others. There will be others. Won’t there?

musically striking, however, was thechallenging Jonathan Harveyquartet no. 3, with the staccatoswirls and manipulation of theinstruments both technicallyimpressive and an engrossing livespectacle. Whilst the major commercialtheatres continue against all the odds to programme excellenttheatre of all kinds, from the

brave and new to the clearly commercial,we should never forget the smaller theatrein our city, professional and, dare I use the word, amateur.

Having seen impressive productions atBrighton Little Theatre on many occassions, notably Steel Magnolias and Canary, I wouldnot hesitate in recommending their newproduction of Abi Morgan’s Lovesong.

“That is the story of our beginning. Andthis is the story of … the end.” Lovesong is a 40-year story of an ordinary love. Youwitness one pivotal week in 60-somethingmarried couple Billy and Maggie’s lives, whilst in flashback you see their youngerselves over several years, much earlier intheir marriage. Then, as terminally ill Maggie

faces the end, time becomes more fluid and thecouples collide and intertwine in this beautifuland haunting tale. All relationships have theirups and downs; the optimism of youthbecomes the wisdom of experience. Love is a leap of faith. Leap with me.

Lovesong was first performed in a highlyacclaimed production by Frantic Assembly in2011, and Brighton Little Theatre’s productionwill be one of its first amateur productions.Brighton Little Theatre’s production will usedrama, mime, movement, dance and somesinging to tell the story of Maggie and Billy’s life in 90 minutes. It also features someoriginally recorded pieces from Sam Rivers and cast member Frank McHugh, who will also be performing live music in the bar after the end of the show.

Abi Morgan’s writing for the screen includesThe Invisible Woman, the Margaret Thatcherfilm Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep, theflagship BBC TV drama The Hour, the BAFTAaward-winning drama Sex Traffic (Channel 4)and Shame (co-written with Steve McQueen). Her writing for the stage includes The Night Is Darkest Before The Dawn (part of the Tricycle Theatre’s Great Game season), Fugee (NT New Connections), Tender(Hampstead), Splendour (Paines Plough) and Tiny Dynamite (Frantic Assembly).

The cast includes Ann Atkins as OlderMaggie, Mike Skinner as Older Billy, CicelyWhitehead as Younger Maggie and FrankMcHugh as Younger Billy, and is directed bySteven Adams and Tess Gill. Steven’s recentproductions at BLT include the amateurpremiere of Jonathan Harvey's Canaryand an extremely well received production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobelast Christmas. Tess directed Loveplay by Moira Buffini, which won Best OverallProduction in the 2013 Brighton and Hove Art Council Drama Awards, and earlier this

year a joyous production of Daisy Pulls It Off.Steven says: “I first read Lovesong just

a few months ago and I knew instantly that this was a play I had to direct. It isbeautifully written, with a simple rhythmand a lyrical nature. It is very sparse ondetail but richly layered with feeling andemotions. It has very little story or plot, but still says so much about the humancondition, the desire to be loved, the need for companionship and the intricacies of the heart.”

Lovesong is Brighton Little Theatre’s entry in the 2014 Brighton & Hove ArtsCouncil’s (BHAC) Drama Awards.Lovesong, 23 - 27 September, Brighton Little Theatre, 0844 888 0432www.brightonlittletheatre.com

entertainment news / film/ art

Most excitingly (or not, if you aren’t a fan!), this week on PostFeature Joseph and I shall be reviewing Magic In The Moonlight, the new Woody Allen film. It stars two of my favourite people (Colin Firth and

Emma Stone) – actually, lots of my favourite people! The film looks to be a great romp, set in the ’20s and based

around a stuffy Englishman’s attempts to debunk a rathercharming young American ‘psychic’. Of course, we can all seewhere this is going … I am one of the supposed minority who findsmodern Woody Allen films far more appealing than the earlier‘classics’. Blue Jasmine (2013),Midnight In Paris (2011), VickyChristina Barcelona (2008) andMatch Point (2005) are all filmsthat I enjoyed hugely, despitethe difference in styles andhumour, whilst his earlier workfor me seems a little laboured, a little too focused on beingdeep and introspective and a little too … well, there is only so much Woody Allen one girl can take on the screen!

The second film for this week is This Is Where I Leave You, acomedy drama based around a pugnacious family’s reunion, directed by Shawn Levy. Levy is one of the most commerciallysuccessful directors of the past decade, with films having grossedover $2 billion at the worldwide box office. His work includesCheaper By The Dozen, Just Married, Night At The Museum andThe Internship … not exactly ‘awards bait’, I’ll grant you, but they clearly do well and definitely have an audience. I am ratherenamored with his 2010 film Date Night, staring Tina Fey, who I would gladly watch reading the phone book as I’m sure I would be laughing heartily along. Fey is also part of the ensemble in This Is Where I Leave You, along with Jason Bateman, Jane Fonda, Rose Bryne and Adam Driver (who is normally found in mumblecore films and the HBO series Girls, so it will beinteresting to see how he fares in this).

This Sunday’s FilmFest is a special treat for anyone who is a fanof horror, gore or humour: we have an exclusive, feature lengthedition of the multi-award winning The Bloody Mary Show! It haspreviously only been shown as short ‘webisodes’, so we havepulled off quite the coup to have it on LatestTV!

Our house isdominatedby Gilbertand George.

No, not the famous‘art for all’ artisticduo, but our twoover-indulged,permanently in-your-face cats. So – unsurprisingly– we have a particular affection for the work of Brighton artistand fellow feline-lover Eve Poland, with ‘Is this it?’ currentlyglaring down at us from our living room wall as a constantreminder to stock up on Sheba.

With only a year’s formal art training, Eve’s is a natural andapparently precocious talent – she had her first exhibition at theage of four in Brighton Library. Her passion for prints led to Evetaking a screenprinting course and now she produces her owneditions. They start with a doodle that may have been inspiredby a photo or the sight of her own posturing pets. That’s worked up into an ink drawing, which Eve then transfers to

the computer. But she is no digital perfectionist, preferring the differences that can occur from thescreenprinting process. We love Eve’s bold, graphicstyle, wickedly acuteobservation and elegant wit. She’s also cornered the ‘kinky lady’ market. See more of her work at evepoland.com.

Don’t miss: It’s BrightonArt Fair this week, so head

to The Corn Exchange from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 September to come face to face with the mostamazing gathering of artists – manylocal. If you make your way to stand92, congratulate Leila Godden onbeing recently accepted as anassociate member of the UnitedSociety of Artists. Her dramaticseascapes and abstracts are set to make a stunning contrast to the work of her stand buddy – and fellow Chalk Gallery (Lewes)artist – Louisa Crispin, whosebeautifully intricate drawings are inspired by the natural world.www.artymagazines.com

Know how to make a comedy nightout make you feel even better? Makeit a charity fundraiser comedy nightout! As much as the idea of a ‘Big

Society’ grates as a cop out from agovernment using new words to say it’s outof its depth, it is heartening to see so manyentertainment bookers turning their hands tohelping out charities – big and small, as beltsgot pulled ever more tighter.

Perfect case in point: this week sees thereturn of Cardiac Comedy with its secondouting (Komedia, Wednesday 24 September,8pm, £13) for The British Heart Foundation.Mixing big names like Angela Barnes – asseen on C4’s Stand Up For The Week, as wellas Mock the Week – with exciting local talent

The British HeartFoundation may bea big organisation, but it needssupport as much

will have helpedpretty much all of us along the way at some point.

In October, TheBrighton Comedy

Festival greets us with its customaryOpening Night Gala In Aid Of Sussex Beacon(Concert Hall, Brighton Dome, Friday 10October, 8pm, £25). Having Alan Carr as apatron has never done it any harm at all, although this year it is hosted not by thetoothy one, but by the marvellous AdamHills instead. Perhaps hosting duties aretied in with how much a comic is seen onChannel 4 in any calendar year ...

Joining Hills in the line-up are Rich Hall,Josh Widdicombe and RomeshRanganathan. Actually, RR is a very activecharity chappie in October, as you can alsocatch him on the bill of Big Cheer ForAmaze (Komedia, Thursday 16 October,8pm, £16) with Angela Barnes (doing hergood deed again – thank you, lady), JustinMoorhouse and others. And in case youwere wondering, Amaze is a brilliant Sussexcharity providing support for local familieswith children and young people withspecial educational needs and disabilities.

Plus, of course, every month sees CharityChuckle at Komedia, fighting the good fightfor those that help others all the yearround, and having had a truly cracking run in the Edinburgh Fringe this year for the first time. And in case you werewondering, October’s headliner is Nathan Caton (14 October, 8pm, £10/5).

It’s not December yet, but it blimmin’ well‘tis the season to be jolly. Spread goodwill toall and dig deep. Ho ho ho.www.komedia.co.uk/brightonwww.brightoncomedyfestival.co.uk

From the short butreverential and harmonydrenched opening of ‘AuxArmes’ to follow up track

‘Donkey’, new band Famy lay outthe template for their big andspacious sound amalgamatingsome of the folk grit of Mumford& Sons, the tribalistic indie-folkband Local Natives, formertouring buddies Wu Lyf, and thereverb-drenched and mournfullyepic Glasvegas. But, they are aband who aren’t part of anyparticular scene, and thatcombined with weird andwonderful backgrounds hasinevitably helped them tofashion something altogetherfresh, and both contemplativeand invigorating.

“We all met in the south ofFrance”, says Arthur, whosebrother Bruce is also in

the band, along with Luca MariaGalbiati. "We all moved there atdifferent times in our lives and metat school around the turn of themillennium. We grew up in thesouth of France, and then movedto London at different points, around recording the album. Thatis where our influences come from;I guess we are a rock band thatcomes from the south of France!”

Their debut album, We FamEcono, was recorded in a church in Gloucestershire, a consciousattempt to capture the spaciousand cavernous sonics of theirsound. “We recorded our album in the summer of 2012 but, forvarious reasons, we weren’t ableto put it out until now. It is quitefrustrating, but it is a record wereally believe in and is a nicereflection of where we were at

that time. I still listen to it.”

Their backgrounds are veryunusual, and although they sounda little like a modern day Americanor British indie-folk band, they havespent very little time in this countryup until recently. But their Frenchbackgrounds are obvious, not leastvia the band’s name … “Initially wethought about ‘Family’, but therewere loads of bands called that, sowe changed it to ‘Famy’, which isFrench for family.

“Luke is Italian, and me and mybrother are English-Indian. Andwe're bilingual; our opening trackis in French – a Marseille footballchant – and a little take from theFrench national anthem. It wascovered by Serge Gainsbourg ...and us!”

Another oddity about the bandis their love of American punklegends Minutemen, who featuredMike Watt in the band, asubsequent member of the evenmore legendary The Stooges. “Weare inspired by the Minutemen;they released a documentary thatwas called We Jam Econo, so we(very cleverly) called our albumWe Fam Econo. We sound nothinglike them … but that was thepoint. The Minutemen’s idea ofpunk was like no one else’s idea;they played their songs and gotspat on. It is a little how we feel,we don’t feel we fit in anywhere inLondon, and we made a recordthat sounds like a punk record, butprobably not for anyone else. Wehaven’t been spat on yet, though!”Famy at The Hope, Wed 24 Sept,8pm, free

It’s the last few days in NYC. Has anyonefigured out yet why any of them werethere in the first place? Me neither. Thisweek’s attempt at asserting the boys’

masculine athleticism sees them on jet skis.We appear to have run out of tokenAmerican sports to play, so now we haveresorted to doing something that normallywould take place on an all-inclusive holidayin Bermuda.

Steph is all a-glow about Stevie. She isgushing like a wayward sewage pipe. Sheexplains to Lucy that Stevie is going to havea chat with Billie about it all and sort it out.“He would never lie,” says Steph. So, by the

end of the episode, he will have lied. Small Sam’s advice to Wheeze, in the impending approach of her trans-

atlantic separation from Alik, is to “make him a collage”. Then he orders agreat big banana (split).

Binky and Lucy meet up and slag off Our National Mother, Her EminenceThe Statue Of Liberty. They’re all “she’s not that great”. Watch yourtongues, you little madams. Will YOU ever have a 305 foot aqua-marinecoloured statue erected on a private island, dedicated to YOU? Will you? Iapologise on behalf of Great Britain, sweet sweet lady.

Amidst the lavender, Billie awaits Stevie, who arrives wearing a linenshirt the colour of sick. He lies to her about kissing Steph.

Jamie has spent $700 on a helmet that helps you not to lose hair. Let’s alltake a second to mull over that, shall we …

Alik and Wheeze are trying to recreate the pottery scene from Ghost, butwith paint. He is all, “I can’t imagine not having you near me”, and, “yourock my world, sugar”. Hideous!

Hello? What is this? Proudlock and Lucy, flirty flirty on a roof? On MarkFrancis’ boat party, Wheeze goes to kiss him and he leaves her hanging. You are SUCH a bitch, MF. Don’t ever change! Stevie is now wearing atangerine blazer, which is not an improvement on the sick coloured linenshirt from earlier. It makes him look a bit like a sad reject from ‘OK Go’!

There’s a lot of banter about Jamie getting it on with Carson, but I’m notconvinced it’s just banter. Just imagine – Carson with his eye tattoo, Jamiewith his Peter Pan tattoo … they could take over the world!

Alik carelessly informs Jamie that Lucy and Proudlock have been hookingup. Jamie is furious and so confronts them. Turns out they HAVE kissed! Notonce, not twice, but thrice! Three times a lady! Now, I hate to toot my ownhorn, but I predicted these two would get it on. They’re the only two whoactually don’t see love and relationships as a dirty poisonous game.

Alik is standing at the stern of the boat with Wheeze, grabs her cheeksand says, “I love ya baby”. Everyone else gathers on the overlooking deckand cheer at the lovers. But this is a bad omen, let’s face it, seeing that theyall did that to Lucy and Jamie at Christmas and then again to Binky andAlex last spring. And look where those relationships ended – in shatteredyuletide dreams and adulterous fornicative orgies.Andrew’s blog can be read at drewjbullock.wordpress.com

It is frankly terrifying how dependentwe have become, as a nation, ontechnology. There are many whosemobile phones seem like a freakish

extension to their thumbs; distant cousinsperhaps to those who share a creepilysymbiotic relationship with Facebook. Ofcourse for every technophile there is atechnophobe. The cantankerous, often(but not necessarily) older being, offeringsuch pearls of wisdom as; “I don’t needone of these smart–like phones with allthis app nonsense, my old phone servesme fine,” and, “I remember when kidsused to play outside, not spend their

life on one of these Nintendo-X-Station gizmos”. Thankfully I am not of the latter group. I love technology. I revel in

technology. I just don’t trust technology. Though I consider myself fairlytechnologically savvy, I am convinced that technology instinctively knowsthe upper limits of my understanding, and exploits it frequently. Too addto my frustrations at the failing of all things electrical, there seems toalways be some numpty on hand to suggest I “try turning it off and onagain,” or “give it a smack”. Such ignorance and brutal savagery arounddelicate components, whilst making me feel better by comparison, does little to help the situation.

The uselessness of man whenfaced with technological tasks wasbeautifully highlighted in the lastfew weeks by two tasks integral tothe filming of Bored Gamers. Thefirst involved the wiring of a gamesconsole so it may be played liveand simultaneously recorded forlater broadcast. In reality, such a seemingly feasible feat requires moreboxes, gadgets, gizmos and cables than I have ever seen. Even now Icouldn’t tell you what these all did. I believe one box up-scales the signalwhilst another down-scales it, but then I could be making this all up. I doknow the day put aside for testing this was an unequivocal nightmare oftechnological failure. This nightmare was repeated when, shortly beforefilming our second episode, the mega drive (an integral part of the show)refused to turn on. All the aforementioned considered, it is embarrassing, and not without a smidgen of irony, that the first problem was eventuallyfixed by turning one of the connected boxes “off and on again” and thelatter issue by punching the retro console. Still, after a week or two of being held hostage by circuit boards and components, all’s well that ends well ... at least ’til next week!Bored Gamers is an hour-long weekly show on all things gaming. Chasing ShadowsITV1, 9pmEveryone loves a confession.Especially when it’s to a reallysavage series of murders –nice ’n’ tidy. Even Sean’s prettychuffed, and he thinks he’s foundthe third victim from thisparticular self-confessedconvicted killer. Except thereseem to be inconsistencies. Isthe man in prison innocent?

Thing is,Sue Ellen knows her boy’s arotter and her heart goes out tothe bride. She’s been there, bought the t-shirt and got the AA tokens to prove it.

Don’t Drop The BabyBBC3, 9pmOh, men! Aren’t they just sillybillies when it comes tochildcare? Hopefully this isn’tquite as condescending as thepremise implies, as midwives arecalled in to help dads-to-be cometo terms with the practicalities ofparenting. This week it’s blood-phobic Jay and inappropriatemotor mouth Digger in need.
