National Young Leaders Day!

Page 2: Laguna Public School · perspectives. We had a visit from Katie's adorable duckling and also got to impress Jody with our reading and learning goals. We are all very impressed with

Yengo Yarns...

Wow- what a week in Yengo! We all showed great courage at our swimming display on Friday with most students recording personal best times/lengths. Our Year 5’s were great role models when visiting our class on Monday. We took it as a great opportunity to brush up on Australian history in preparation for our Sydney excursion in Week 11. We read What's your story? and used different pairs of sunglasses to 'look through the eyes' of different characters which assisted with our understanding of history from their perspectives. We had a visit from Katie's adorable duckling and also got to impress Jody with our reading and learning goals. We are all very impressed with the standard and courage of the speeches we have heard so far.

Harper enjoyed some delicious Japanese food in Sydney over the weekend. Harper spoke to the staff in Japanese and they understood him! Its great to hear our kids applying their learning outside of the classroom!

The very capable Miss Daniela Suazo will be following Miss Cornish's program while she is on leave for Week 8 and part of Week 9. Thank you!

Finchley news…What a week we have had in the Finchley room. It's very lucky we

have just started a unit on Farms as part of our Living World focus in Science, as we have had a visit from two sets of ducklings in the past week. A big thank you to Ashton and Cooper for sharing their little fluffy pets with us. We loved observing their webbed feet, their long beaks and feeling their oh so fluffy feathers.

In Maths we are examining the properties of 2D shapes using all sorts of materials.

The Kinder’s have been writing their first whole sentences with great success. The Year 1’s are using their knowledge of vowel digraphs to spell tricky words independently, and use them in wonderful sentences. What a wonderful class we have!

Warrawalong warblings…

On Monday, the Year 6 students, accompanied by parents Sacha, Mel, Cisca and myself journeyed to Sydney for the National Young Leaders Day. We drove to Berowra, took the train to Central station and then took the light rail to the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour where the event took place. There were four speakers – Tim Diamond (Cotton On), Tamsin Janu (author), Cate Campbell (Olympic swimmer) and Holly Ferling (Australian cricketer). Thank you students for your interest and excellent behaviour, and thank you Mel, Cisca and Sacha for your support. The messages that resonated with the students were:

- Choose friends who will help you be your best and support you, and be that friend to others – Cate Campbell

- It’s not enough to have leadership skills – you need to put them into action! – Holly Ferling

- Find something that you are good at, and find something that you love – Cate Campbell

- Feedback can be difficult to hear, but it an opportunity to grow and improve – Tamsin Janu

- Hard work is a must to achieve your goals – Cate Campbell

- Challenge your fears – don’t hide away from them – Tamsin Janu

- Setbacks will always happen, but be ready to ‘flick the switch’ and move on – Holly Ferling
