Issues and SolutionsOur actions can lead to

positive change.Issues, problems, issues! There are big and little issues and problems that concern a lot of people. Some problems and issues have obvious solutions while some issues and problems seem to have no solution.

In your Exhibition process you will get a chance to apply your skills as an action taker to some of these issues and problems. You will be choosing a real problem(either local or global) and carefully working through to a solution and take some action to help this issue or problem.

Working through this Exhibition journal will help you organize your time and resources to discover the best solution to your chosen issue or problem.

Good luck!

Why is this a problem/issue?

• You have chosen this problem for a reason.• How does it affect your life or those around you?• How does it affect your feelings or emotions?• Why do you think it is important?

Why do you feel a responsibility for th is problem/issue?

Inner Journey

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Animal abuse affects

my life because my

whole family loves

animals and are sad

when animal abuse

happens.

Animal abuse is

important because

it is a very big

problem and

happens a lot. It affects my

feelings because I

am angry when

animals are hurt by

humans on

purpose.

REFLECTION 1Our actions can lead to

positive change. You have chosen a topic. •Has it changed from your first thoughts? How and why? •Are you happy with this development? •You have been put in a group. Who is in the group? •Why are they in your group? •Do you think the group can work co-operatively and effectively? How and why?•What did you think about your first week of collaboration?•My topic did not change from my first

thoughts. •Millicent, Kathryn, Bethany, and Katie are in my group. •We all wanted to do animal abuse and animal testing and learn about animals. We work cooperatively and effectively because we have a lot of information already. •Our first week of collaboration went well. We still have two weeks to go and we are thinking of what to do for action.

Developing Lines of Inquiry

You have defined your problem/issue in relation to Form, Function, Causation andResponsibility.Look at the remaining two Concepts to clarify your lines of inquiry

Connection How is it connected to other issues/problems?

It is connected to other topics where animals are used for scientists to do something to animals.

Perspective What are other points of view? That animal testing is good because we would not have some

medicines and cosmetics.

Searching and Collecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Our Process – Searching and Collecting

People to whom we spoke:

Name: Mrs. Sikora

From this person we learned We learned about this anti-animal testing website that was really helpful.

Survey we created and distributed

The group surveyed: Grade 5,6,7,8. some teachers. Number of people surveyed: 10 teachers, grade 5,6,7,8.

Important conclusion we can make from the results: Many people know about animal testing and think that it is wrong, also people do not check their medicines and cosmetics to see if they are tested on animals.

Important talk with advisor: We talked about what we should do for our action and a surveys and springnote.

Page 11: Katie's PYP Journal

Process Reflection

These are things I thought about our topic before BUT now I think differently

I thought that all animal testing was wrong. But now I think that testing cosmetics on animals are wrong but testing some medicines on animals is okay if they do it infrequently.

The are ideas I had about out problem/issue before AND I still have

nowI still think animal testing is pretty much wrong.

These are things about our problem/issue that still challenge us

and I still wonder about I wonder why companies test on animals.

I would like our audience to leave our presentation with these “BIG UNDERSTANDINGS”

I want the audience to leave the presentation and be more aware of animal testing.

Synthesizing and Connecting

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 12: Katie's PYP Journal

Think of Solutions.ACTION !

Brainstorm a wide range of ideas that could help solve this problem/issueHere is your chance to be creative. Write down all possible answers. Do

not discard any yet because this is your chance to start thinking outside the box find a creative solution. Be creative, unusual, fanciful, practical and obvious. S T R E T C H your imagination!

• Put up signs about animal testing . • Write an email to all the ZIS parents

telling them to not buy any animal tested products.

• Throw out all animal tested products. • Stop buying animal tested products. • Close down animal testing companies. • Send e-mails to animal testing

companies.

Our actions can lead to positive change.

CHOOSING ACTIONIs your action S.M.A.R.T.?

Specific

Measureable

Attainable

Relevant

Time-bound

Specific •Is your action clear•Does everyone understand about how your action will happen?•Have you covered 5 “W”s and the “H”?Measurable•How will you know your action has worked?Attainable•Will you be successful taking this action?Relevant•Does this action actually relate to your problem?Time-bound•Will you have enough time to implement your action?

We can make a

difference

Page 14: Katie's PYP Journal

Make your Action Plan

How will your action affect your problem?

People will be more aware.

Who needs to be convinced?

The 4th graders.

What objections might you come up against?

Time and unanswerable questions.

How can you overcome those objections?

Work really hard and research a lot.

What resources will you need?

A power point, bookmarks, e-mail.

Who can help you?

Mr. Allen, Mrs. Sikora, Mrs. Wolf, and Beauty without cruelty.

Where should you begin?

Practicing our skit and writing an e-mail

What will be your next step?

Finishing the power point and preparing the skit.

Who will do what to achieve your action?

Millicent will make the bookmarks, we all will make the power point, I will send the email, and practicing the skit.

Our actions can lead to positive change.

Page 15: Katie's PYP Journal

REFLECTIONActing and SharingWe can make a differenceI did a skit to the 4th

graders, made bookmarks, and sent an email to beauty without cruelty. I liked doing a skit to the fourth graders. I think they learned a lot. Millicent made the bookmarks at her house but I like laminating and handing them out. I wrote the e-mail to beauty without cruelty, it was really fun to get a response from a really big company!

Exhibition Night- Reflection

Our actions can lead to positive change.

I enjoyed Exhibition and showing my parents and friends. I think we should have just one more day to prepare; we were a bit rushed, but I did not point at anyone or whisper quietly. We remembered all our lines, I did not look at the smart board or poster the whole time. I think everyone really liked the presentation. My parents were so happy!

Page 17: Katie's PYP Journal

My final message is…

I hope that I made more people aware of the horrible parts of animal testing. I also hope that they check the back of makeup and hair products to see if they are tested on animals before they buy the product. I want people to know and research animal testing. I want people to see the videos and pictures I have seen about animal

testing. I want them to do something about animal testing. I want them to change

minds.
