Marketing your Girl Scout for high cookie sales

As the month of March comes to a close, so does the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas cookie fundraiser.

Here are a few tips to market your Girl Scouts so she can sell as many boxes of Girl Scout cookies as possible.

Pick a certain date two weeks in advance to set up a table to sell cookies somewhere in your community such as a popular restaurant, church or store. Make fliers to inform community members where and when you’ll be set up there so they can find you easily.

People won’t know you’re there unless they can see your signs. Have balloons, banners and sidewalk signs leading to your table. Use big logos and large signs so people can also see them from a distance.

Make sure the Girl Scouts who are tabling are well-rested and excited to be there. People will feed off the energy of the girls, so it is important to make sure they have a positive attitude before the day begins. Give rewards and praise when certain selling goals are achieved.

After an earthquake hit the region, located between India and Pakistan, Sarah Omar said neither bordering countries helped the residents of Kashmir, even though the two countries previously fought over the ter-ritory.

As a result, people in Kashmir seldom have electricity.

“We looked at this area and said ‘That’s an area that needs help,” she said.

Sarah Omar said the territory was also special to the girls be-cause her father is from Pakistan while Ananth is from India.

“This was an area that we had heard of but, we’d been friends since first grade, and it didn’t really inhibit our friendship. We saw each other as very similar... we share similar food [interests], similar cultures, similar music, but we don’t share the same religion,” she said.

Overall, the pair spent about 118 hours on the project, almost enough hours to earn two Gold Awards and made presentations to companies, church groups and neighbors to raise money to buy the flashlights.

Their result of their hard work allowed them to buy 1,075 flashlights. Sarah Omar said they worked with the Central Asian Institute and the Citizens Foundation, two organization that build schools in the region, to decide where the flashlights would be donated.

“We decided to give the flash-lights to these schools for them to distribute amongst their kids because they teach both girls and boys and then these kids could take it home and they could use

these flashlights to do their homework at night, to teach their parents how to read and write and things like that to empower a community so that they can better themselves,” she said.

Rita Bauer, a now-retired teacher, said she served as an advisor to the girls’ gold award project and both girls showed great leadership skills.

“They already had a goal,” she said. “They knew what they wanted to do and they were thinking beyond themselves.”

Sarah has always shown great perseverance, Bauer said.

“I think that one it’s a per-sonality trait of Sarah’s to set a goal and strive to meet that, but also I think it is something that has been instilled in her years of scouting to continu-ally set a new goal and when it is reached, to then set another goal and work toward that reach, always building on a foundation to build on what she had created,” she said.

Theresa Omar, Sarah’s moth-er, said Sarah has always shown an interest in helping others.

“She likes taking care of other people and she has always,” she said. “I remember, it was like her first week of kindergarten and she got some award for helping some another kids get adjusted to kindergarten.”

Sarah said she plans to continue to work with the Girl Scouts when she is older.

“Girl Scouts has formed so much of who I am and a lot of my self-confidence,” she said. “I really want other girls to at least get a taste what that is like.”

MEMORANDUM

DATE: Sept. 23, 2010 TO: Koji Fuse, President FROM: Katie Grivna, Account Executive SUBJECT: Approval Needed for New Client Your approval is needed for a new client, the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas. The Northeast Texas council of the Girl Scouts:

• Serves 40,000 girls • Offers scouts opportunities to develop character and courage • Provides girls with fun activities that expand their knowledge and imagination • Presents opportunities for scouts to meet new people • Supplies scouts with camps and programs for $12 a year

On Oct. 12, the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas will host the Real Girls, Real Women Annual Awards Luncheon, which will honor professional businesswomen and two local Girl Scouts for their work. Sarah Omar, a recipient of the 2009 Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest achievement a Girl Scout can earn, will be the subject of the feature story. Omar created a pen-pal project between Texas Girl Scouts and girls of Pakistan, Kashmir and India. For the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas campaign, I am prepared to write a position paper about the council’s position on bullying, a problem affecting many children in North Texas everyday. Bullying is known to have negative affects on children’s personal growth and development and is more becoming prevalent everyday. The practice of bullying fundamentally threatens the mission of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and demands immediate action. Monica Contreras, the director of communications for the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, has been more than helpful and willing to share her knowledge of the organization for the project. Monica can be reached at 972-349-2452 or at [email protected]. The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas’ goal to instill morals, positive self-esteem and a deep appreciation for philanthropy is inspiring and peaked my interest in the organization. I contacted Monica after logging on to the council’s website. We later spoke about the organization and its plans for the fall. The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas staff’s encouraging attitude makes it a worthy organization to work with. Does this organization meet your approval?

Ms. Julia Ryan, Student Life Editor The Eagle American University 252 Mary Graydon Center 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW Washington, D.C. 20016 Oct. 13, 2010 Dear Ms. Ryan, One American University student is using her experience as a Girl Scout to help area Washington D.C. low-income girls develop leadership skills and self-confidence. Sarah Omar, a freshman international studies and religious studies major, is part of the Young Leaders Program which allows college students to act as Girl Scout troop leaders for Girl Scouts whose parents don’t have the time to commit to a troop. As the Student Life Editor of the Eagle, I believe it is important you know about Sarah and the work she has done to help others. I deem it is imperative for the community and students of American University to know about Sarah and her work with the Girl Scouts. Last year, Sarah was awarded the Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can receive, for co-founding the Bridge of Lights program. This program donated over 1,000 flashlights to schoolchildren in the Kashmir region, which has been without power since an earthquake shook the region in 2005. Now, Sarah is using her experience to help future generations of Girl Scouts. In order to share her story and inspire others, I propose an 800-word personality profile feature story on Sarah, focusing on what she has done, what she plans to do, and why she chose to accomplish these things. Is it important to help others? Why? Why did she get involved in the Young Leaders program? How can other students get involved? Sarah has a bubbly personality and concentrates on achieving her goals. I am certain I can share Sarah’s story into an article that can inform and inspire readers. Thank you for your time and the opportunity, Katie Grivna [email protected]
