knowledge economy, Older Workers Driving Northwest Indiana’s Latest hoosier hot 50 Jobs list

Earlier this year, the Indiana Depart-ment of Workforce Development introduced the latest version of the Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs List for North-

west Indiana. The list, which ranks occupa-tions based on projected growth over the short and long term, among other factors, identifies the most promising high-wage, high-demand jobs for our region. Two major trends affecting the workforce of Northwest Indiana played a significant role in deter-mining the occupations making the list: an aging population and the transition to a knowledge economy.

The age of the workforce over the next 10 years will play a key role in creating many job openings for workers in Northwest Indiana. For example, the top job on the list for the Re-gion is Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrig-eration Mechanics and Installers. The Indiana Department of Workforce Development does not expect many new jobs in this field to be created, but an older workforce will create de-mand for new workers to replace retirees. An older population will also increase demand for health care workers.

As the Baby Boomer generation (adults born between 1946 and 1964) enters their Golden Years, they will take more visits to the hospital and trips to the doctor. It should be no surprise, then, that 13 of the 50 jobs on the list are in Health Care. Some of the hot jobs from this field include nurses, therapists, therapist assistants, and several types of health care practitioners. These 13 occupa-tions are expected to account for more than 630 annual job openings through 2018.

Changes in technology will also create many new jobs in the Region. The second largest source of jobs, after the health care field, comes from a cluster known as STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, En-gineering, and Mathematics, and together, these four disciplines are driving the transi-

tion to a knowledge economy. Occupations in the STEM field typically require higher lev-els of education and training. Management Analysts, which stands at #3 on the Hoosier

Hot 50 Jobs List for Northwest Indiana, use statistics, analysis, and a strong under-standing of budgeting to inform businesses of management decisions.

As businesses rely more and more on statistics and data to make decisions, occu-pations like this will become the new Hot Jobs. Other STEM occupations on the list include Accountants and Auditors, Industrial Engi-neers, Financial Analysts, Market Research Analysts, and Environmental Scientists and Specialists. Several technology jobs, such as Software Engineers and Network Systems and Data Communications Ana-lysts are also included.

The movement towards a knowledge economy can also be found in more tradi-tional occupations. Several production oc-cupations, traditionally thought of as “blue collar,” now require the ability to understand and adapt to changes in technology. In-dustrial Machinery Mechanics, #14 on the list, is no longer a job that requires a mon-key wrench and some elbow grease to be successful. Manufacturers of today utilize some of the most advanced machinery and equipment to produce and transport goods throughout the world. Consequently, installa-tion, maintenance, and repair workers need to be familiar with computers, electronics, and sophisticated machinery to stay up-to-date with the advanced technology found on the shop floor.

The complete list of the Hoosier Hot 50 can be found online (https://netsolutions.dwd.in.gov/hh50/). There, you can view the Hot 50 list for the entire state of Indiana. Each occupation on the state list also in-cludes a profile and video of a real Hoosier working in that occupation. Lists for all 11 Economic Growth Regions in the state are available as well.

what’s required when filing the initial claim?n Your address, social security number,

phone number, and the reason you are unemployed.

n Last employer’s name (company name), mailing address, phone number, and dates of employment.

what to expect.n You will receive a wage transcript and

benefits computation form from the De-partment of Workforce Development (DWD) within 10 days.

n This doesn’t mean you qualify for benefits. It’s merely a statement that pro-vides you with a weekly benefit amount and an overall maximum benefit amount — If you are found eligible.

n If there is a problem with your claim, you will receive correspondence from DWD. Problems could include: discharge, quitting or other issues that might affect eligibility. preparing for an interview is not just about updating your resume or picking out that perfect interviewing outfit. Preparation

involves anticipating what you may be asked, how you would answer and should involve questions that you should ask. All these questions and answers will help the prospective employer determine if you are the right candidate and it will help you decide if it’s the job you really want.

be prepared Planning ahead for questions the interviewer may ask and practicing your answers is a good idea. Here are 24 interview questions and although you may not be asked all of them, be sure to look them over and be prepared to answer at least a handful of them.

1. tell me a little about yourself.Talk about your experience, qualifications, and accomplishments — not your child-hood, family, or hobbies.2. why do you want to work as a ...?Talk about the interesting details of the job and why they fascinate you.3. what skills does this job require?Use your fingers and count off the skills 1 ... 2 ... 3 ...4. what qualifications do you have?Using your fingers, name a skill, list the qualifications. Move to the next skill.5. tell me about my company.Call the Chamber of Commerce. Get information on the company size, its key products or services, the markets where it competes, and its overall reputation.6. why do you want to work for us?You’re on your own.7. how did you learn about us?Friend, relative, newspaper story, adver-tisement — anything to show that your prospective employer is not a random choice.

8. how many other companies have you approached?“Several for back-up, but this is where I really want to work, this is where my hopes are.”9. how many employers have you worked for during the last 5 years?Tell the truth!

10. you seem to switch jobs a lot. why?Job stagnation, demotions due to down- sizing, career exploration, a short-lived personal problem, or having made a bad choice are all good reasons.11. how long do you plan to work here?“A long time. This is the job I’ve been hoping for.”

12. tell me about your current (or last) job?List your duties and responsibilities. Explain your accomplishments.13. why are you leaving that job?Job stagnation, demotions, down-sizing, career exploration, or simply having made a bad choice are all good reasons.14. are you planning to give notice that you’re leaving for another job?Explain that you don’t want to leave them short-handed. A two-week notice is customary.15. what will your manager say when you give notice that you are leaving?Explain why you’ll be missed. Don’t give the impression that they will be glad to get rid of you.16. what did you like most about that job?Cover your responsibilities, challenges, accomplishments, and the people.

17. what would you change about that job?Don’t bad-mouth the job. Explain that you’d want more responsibilities. It shows initiative.18. did you ever have a disagreement with a boss? why? why not?Answer “yes” and you’re a troublemaker, “no” and you’re a wimp. Find the middle ground. “Sure, we disagreed. But we worked well together. For example...”19. tell me about your education or training?Explain your education or training and tell how it helped prepare you for this job.20. did you enjoy school? why?The manager may want to know if you enjoy learning and whether you might benefit from a training program.21. which course did you find the most difficult? why?

The manager wants to know if you have perseverance: “I got a D on my first exam in algebra. My study skills were all wrong. I joined a study group. By the third term, I pulled it up to a B and kept it there.”22. did you join any school activities? why?School activities show that you’re sociable; that you enjoy being part of a group, and that you can work with other people. This is important in the work place.23. how were your grades in math? The job may require basic math skills like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages. “I had a problem with calculus, but my basic math skills are good.”24. do you plan to continue your education?Continuing education courses suggest growth, ambition, promotability — and may qualify for tuition assistance.

... and questions you ask

Impressing an interviewer isn’t as hard as you may think. How can you make a positive impression? Turn the table on the interviewer and ask interested

and sincere questions. This is where your research into the company can make a difference. Yes, doing some research on the company before the interview is to your advantage, because the more you know about the company, the better questions you can ask. here are some questions to select from. Select at least five questions and put them in order of importance to you. You don’t want to take up too much of the interviewer’s time, however, be sure to get at least three important questions in.

1. If hired, would I be filling a newly created position, or replacing someone?2. Was my predecessor promoted?

3. Would you describe a typical workday and the things I’d be doing?4. Which duties are most important for this job? Least important?5. How would I be trained or introduced to the job?6. How long should it take me to get my feet on the ground and become productive?7. How is the job important to the company — how does it contribute?8. What are the department’s goals for the year?9. How many people work in your department? In the company?10. Who are the people I’d be working with and what do they do?11. Can someone in this job be promoted? If so, to what position?12. How would I get feedback on my job performance, if hired?13. If hired, would I report directly to you, or to someone else?

14. Has the company had a layoff in the last three (3) years? If so, how long was the layoff and was everyone recalled?15. Is this company owned by any other company?16. What major markets does this company (or parent company) compete in?17. Are actual sales for the company ahead of last year’s sales?18. If you were to offer me this job, where could I expect to be in five years?19. What do you consider to be my weaknesses? Strengths?20. Could you give me a brief tour? I’d enjoy seeing where your people work.21. What could I say or do to convince you to offer me this job?22. I want this job. Would you consider hiring me on a 30-day trial period to prove that I could do the job?
