INSSAR President’s Greetings

Compatriots:

When I was preparing my report of Indiana Society activities for the Central Dis-trict Meeting held at the end of October, it became abundantly clear the work we have been doing the past 12 months. I thought this would be good oppor-tunity to share with each of you the activities of the Indiana Society over the last year so you can share in the pride I feel for the great work we do: Participa-tion in Veterans Day parades and Wreath across America ceremonies; partici-pated in Memorial Day and 4th of July observances throughout the State; “Charged the Hill” with the flags during the Conner Prairie events over July 4th; participated in numerous parades throughout the state throughout the year; hosted the President General at the George Rogers Clark Memorial Service in Vincennes; commissioned a new Chapter –the Clifty Creek Chapter (Jefferson County); participated in monthly Naturalization ceremonies for new citizens; presented Flag Certificates to many individual and organizations for their patriotic display of the U.S. Flag; attended numerous school programs - visited public school, private school and home school groups telling the story of the American Revolution; discussed with students the Revolutionary War Exhibit at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis; supported the C.A.R both through interaction as well as monetary support; participated with the Wounded Warriors program; attended Hon-or Flight returns of WWII and Korean Veterans; supported the DAR throughout the state with various joint pro-grams; sponsored Youth Programs with the Middle School Brochure Contest, the Elementary School Poster Con-test, the Eagle Scout Contest, JROTC programs, the Knight Essay Contest, the Rumbaugh Oration Contest; provided support of the U.S.O and presented portraits of George Washington to local schools in support of PG Dooley’s initi-atives; participated in approximately 5 Patriot Grave Markings throughout Indiana. If that was not enough, mem-bers of the Indiana Society participated at a number of national events, including: Last Naval Battle off Cape Canav-eral, FL, Blue Licks, KY, Rendezvous at Vincennes, Kings Mountain, SC, and Point Pleasant, WV. We placed wreaths at local battle events: De LaBalme Massacre, Capture of Fort Sackville [Vincennes], and Fort Ouiatenon.

Lastly, INSSAR Members hold 7 membership spots on 22 different National Committees. Two of these are as Chair-men and one as Vice-Chairmen. With this involvement, INSSAR has an opportunity to help set the course for the future of the SAR. Keep up the good work. Your commitment helps us to fulfill the mission of the Sons of the Ameri-can Revolution –“....to maintain and expand the meaning of patriotism, respect for our national symbols, the value of American citizenship, and the unifying force of ‘e pluribus unum’ that was created from the people of many na-tions -- one nation and one people.”

Augustin de la Balme commemoration

(A. de la Balme Commemoration photo) On Saturday, November 1st, the Annual Colonel Augus-tin de la Balme Battle Site Commemoration, hosted by the Col. Augustin de la Balme chapter, DAR, took place on the banks of the Eel River, near the Whitley-Allen County line. The Indiana Society Color Guard presented the Colors.

The Colonel, along with most of his men, perished during the battle at the hands of the Miami Indians, led by Chief Little Turtle (allies of the British).

Above: a sword from the battle was found during an excavation of the site.

Many SAR and DAR members participated and are pictured.

Anthony Halberstadt Veterans Day Activities

At sunrise on Veterans Day, the chapter presented the employees of Raytheon in Fort Wayne with a Flag Certificate, as well as a post-size American flag, in recognition of their patriotic display of the flag, as well as their continuing support of the local Veterans Administration. Each Memorial Day, the Raytheon grounds are decorated with hundreds of ‘spearhead’ American flags, each one representing a donation from a Raytheon employee. The event featured the singing of the National Anthem by the Raytheon Singers, with the flag being raised by the Color Guard of the 122nd Fighter Wing, Indiana ANG. Also in attendance were members of the Mary Penrose Wayne chapter, DAR.

ed the colors at the Caroline Scott Harrison DAR

meeting on Oct. 2.

Here is a presentation from the Northern Command Color Guard of the Indiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution which celebrates 10 years of service to the community. The presentation shows members of the color guard as well as other chapters participating in various patriotic events. This should give you an idea of what activities we involve ourselves in. If you know of an interested individu-al in color guarding please forward on to them and if in the East Central Indiana area please give my name. If interest comes from other areas then please have them contact the appropriate INSSAR Com-mander. Bob Howell for Southern Command and Stuart Hart for the Central Command.

On Wednesday, 12 November 2014 the Clarence A Cook Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution presented

the C.A.R. Bronze Award to Honorary Sr. President Mary Freeman for her service to the Old Glory Society,

Children of the American Revolution.

The Bronze C.A.R-SAR Medal of Appreciation is presented in appreciation for outstanding services rendered

to a local C.A.R. Society. It bears a relief of the C.A.R. National Emblem on the obverse and is circumscribed

with the legend “SAR C.A.R. Medal of Appreciation.”

Under her direction, with the support of the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter NSDAR, the Old Glory Society

became very active again. During her tenure the Society celebrated its 100th anniversary and the Clarence A

Cook Chapter, SAR becoming a co-sponsor of the Society. It is a well-deserved award, and we share in cele-

Duneland Chapter honors World War II Veteran

On December 6, 2014, members of the Duneland Chapter INSSAR presented the SAR War Service Medal and Cer-tificate to World War II veteran Compatriot Lyle Lovell of Portage, Indiana. A native of Waukomis, Oklahoma, Mr. Lovell was in high school when the United States entered World War II. Knowing he would be drafted after gradua-tion, he volunteered to become an aviation cadet in March of 1943 thinking he would be allowed to finish high school. Instead, he was drafted one month later, inducted into the Army Air Corps, and sent to San Antonio, Texas, for flight training.

Mr. Lovell graduated aviation cadet training as a single engine pilot in February of 1944, promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant and continued his training in the ensuring months. On D-Day he was on a troop transport ship heading to England. Lt. Lovell served with the 366th Fighter Squadron, 358th Fighter Group (Orange Tails) in France and Germany. He piloted P-47 aircraft on 84 combat missions during the Brest, Ardennes, Northern France, Rhine-land and Central Europe Campaigns. During this time he was promoted to First Lieutenant, shot down twice, wounded and became a prisoner of war for a brief time.

His decorations and citations include the Air Medal with ten oak leaf clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, WW II Vic-tory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, and Order of the Purple Heart. Shortly after the end of the war, Lt. Lovell was promoted to Captain. Following the war, Captain Lovell served as Squadron Commander based in Okinawa. Lyle left the service in 1947 and attended the University of Ok-lahoma on the GI Bill majoring in chemical engineering. Following graduation he was employed as a chemical engi-neer for a subsidiary of Standard Oil and relocated to Northwest Indiana.

Compatriot Lovell has served as President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Duneland Chapter and is currently the chapter’s Vice President. He was instrumental in establishing the Duneland Chapter after the nearby William Van Gordon Chapter disbanded. Nearing his 90th birthday, Lyle remains a valued member of the Chapter and is truly a member of the greatest generation.

Notes on Applications By Bob Howell

1. Birth Certicates: In the past, an INSSAR applicant could submit either a “short-form birth certificate,”

which usually lists only the mother’s married name, or a “long-form birth certificate” which gives the moth-er’s maiden name. A “long-form birth certificate” was required if the line of descent from patriot to appli-cant went through the mother’s side of the family. However, the most recent edition of the Application Preparation Manual (p. 7) states, in part, “The documentation packet submitted with the application must contain a copy of the applicant’s long-form birth certificate naming parents, unless a certificate cannot be obtained,” Cases where a long-form copy of the applicant’s birth certificate is not available will have to be considered on a case-by-case basis. In Indiana, a copy of the long-form birth certificate is only available through the state. Local health offices can only issue short-form birth certificates.

2. How Do I Get An Indiana Long-form Birth Certificate? On the Internet, go to: Indiana Department of Health

- then under Divisions click on Vital Records - then click on Vital Records ordering system - then click on Birth Certificate - then fill in the required information. Make sure you order the Long-Form certificate - not the Standard -Form. I believe the cost is $10.00 but there may also be some mailing expense and it should take 2-4 weeks to mail the certificate.

3. Application Packages: To speed processing of both regular and supplemental applications, request that the application package contain the original and at least two copies of the application form, as well as copies of all documents cited as references.

Call for contest participants

Please encourage well-spoken 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade students that you might know to enter the 2015 Joseph S. Rumbaugh historical orations contest. Students enrolled in public, private parochial and home schools are eligible to compete. The Indiana Society's state level contest will be held Saturday, 18 April, at the public library in Fishers, Hamilton Co., Indiana. A respectable cash award will be presented to the first place finisher, who then will be eligible for the national contest, which will be held in nearby Louisville, Kentucky, in late June, concurrent with the 125th Congress. The five to six minute oration must be original and deal with an event, personality, or document of the Revolutionary War era and its relevance to America today. The oration must be essentially the same as the submitted manuscript. Manuscripts are due to me by 1 March. Please see the following URLs for full details and required forms. http://inssar.org/youth/ http://www.sar.org/Youth/Oration_Contest Feel free to refer interested parties directly to me.
