Governor RonGeorge officiated at the ceremony.Margot was sponsored by her fatherPast President Walter Wickson and hermother Corinne. Walter and Corinneare both active members of the Club.Carla Cacovic was sponsored by PastLt. Governor and current Secretary WillDunlop. Margot was a former memberof the Club who had taken time out tocare for her daughter. Nathan Georgewas sponsored by his father PastPresident and Current Lt. GovernorRon George.

Luncheon Speakers37th Annual Student Recognition Day, June 4, 2013

The meeting took place in the Cedar Hill Golf Course Club House. PastPresident Paul DeGagne was coordinator and Master of Ceremonies. VictoriaSchool District was represented by Board Chair Peg Orcherton, Board Vice-Chair Bev Horsman and Deputy Superintendent Sherri Bell. Club President KenHumble introduced the Head Table guests then turned the meeting over to PaulDeGagne.

Deputy Superintendent Bell welcomed the Secondary Students andAdministrators and thanked the KC of Victoria for supporting and promotingeducation at all levels in Greater Victoria. Six students and an Administratorfrom each of seven Secondary Schools and three students and an Administratorfrom S J Willis (GAP) were in attendance.Esquimalt Secondary: Vice-Principal Garter Giesbrecht introduced students andspoke about some of their strengths and interests. Liam Orme, Nigel Cockerill,Alex Brame, Heather Townsend, Kati Raven George Jim, and Ariel Slack. Liam:Renaissance man, musician, cyclist. Nigel: Strong in academics, member of SkillsCanada, community service. Alex: Leader, very good student, communityservice. Heather: Honor roll, dancer, Parliamentary Page, volunteer worker. KatiRaven: Outstanding leader, dedicated to Cops for Cancer, plans includeDalhousie University. Ariel: Top scholar, professional actor, specialty 'improv'.Arial spoke about the importance of humor in everyday living. He believes'people are funny' and everyone should be able to tell jokes. He appreciates thesupport he receives from school staff and fellow students.Lambrick Park Secondary: Vice-Principal Thomas Thompson introduced thestudents from Lambrick Park. They are a diverse group excelling in academics,fine arts, sports, shop, etc. Brandon Selina, Josh Poon, Evan Willow, (LaurenPeebles, Raveena Jnagal), Manmeet Parmar. Brandon: Strong academically,community service, going on to University. Josh: Strength in academics, active instudent group, future includes University. Evan: Strong academically but specialinterest is baseball. Future may include being a Major League baseball catcher.Manmeet: Strong academically, community service, interest in world affairs.Manmeet spoke about "Poverty". Starvation is a world-wide problem. Educationis required to give an awareness of the severity of the problem. Action is neededto help create renewable and sustainable environmental conditions to helpreduce poverty.Mount Douglas Secondary: Vice-Principal Phillip Pitre introduced the studentsfrom Mount Douglas. The programs available for students are designed toencourage students to become interested and active. Programs includeacademics, fine arts, sports, etc. Brian Dowds, Caleigh Bachop, Nick Guerreiro,Trevor Kidd, Hanna McAulay, Sandra Justice. Brian: A member of the SchoolChallenge program, captain of football team, strong academically. Caleigh: Anoutstanding student, future plans include Western Ontario University. Nick:

Strong in academics and fine arts, involved in 'improv'. Trevor: Anotheroutstanding student, music specialist (composer of song "Little Dreamer").Hannah: Many interests, strong academically, top athlete, pastry chef.Sandra: Top scholar, music specialist, in choir, 'improv' club, on volley ball team,on Student Council. As speaker for Mt. Doug, Sandra spoke about an experienceshe had on one occasion acting as Deputy Prime Minister on behalf of her Schooland the importance of being involved generally in community activities.Oak Bay Secondary: Principal Dave Thomson introduced students from OakBay. He is proud of the interests and accomplishments of the students in hisschool. Mr. Thomson also referred briefly to the adjustments required to keeppace with changes in technology throughout education in recent years. TaliaGlover, Kaisa Grant, Grace Hatherill, James Furney, Michelle Sparksman, TalenRimmer. Talia and Kaisa: Mr. Thomson believes they are much the same, similarinterests, youth for change, community oriented, both very successful students.Grace: Strong academically, Respite worker, Cops for Cancer, volunteer worker.James: Tops in academics and fine arts (music), Amnesty International,Encounter Canada. Michelle: Top academically, fine arts specialty theatre,actress. Talen: Outstanding student, athlete (half marathon), co-valedictorian, 5.0GPA, plans Marine Biology at U. Victoria. As speaker, Talen spoke about havingbeen to Mexico where he was inspired by seeing a project where a house wasbeing built for an impoverished family. The family valued all things they hadincluding education. He noted particularly how much Roberto, a 6-year old,valued a 'pencil' he had been given.Reynolds Secondary: Principal Harold Caldwell introduced the students fromReynolds. Mr. Caldwell thanked the Kiwanis Club for its continued support forthe schools in Greater Victoria. He is proud of the variety of curriculum choicesstudents have at Reynolds and of the staff and students he works with. Togetherit enables Reynolds to continue its positive contribution to the community.Alastair Kierulf, Micayla Frawley, Griffin Marsh, Kate Worthy, Darin Kamsteeg,Holy Lam. Alastair Kierulf: Strong academically, varied interests, specialtyChemistry. Micayla Frawley: Very good student, soccer specialist, plans includeKingston University. Griffin Marsh: Early schooling in England, soccer, muchinvolved in community activity. Kate Worthy: Specialist in French and Englishstudies, Cops for Cancer, plans include McGill. Darin Kamsteeg, strongacademically, soccer player and coach, plans University of Toronto.Holy Lam: Strong academically, fine arts, creative arts (poetry musicals).Holy spoke about his love for the creative arts. Theatre should be natural, showoriginality, poetry should show natural personification - Holy says, "Situationdescription, as it goes - as it flows!"Spectrum Community: Principal Rob House spoke briefly about each studentfrom Spectrum. Mr. House thanked Kiwanis for continued support over theyears. He said there were 340 graduating from Spectrum and it was difficult toselect only six for this event when so many others could rate the opportunity.

Smriti Ahluwalia, Stephanie Butler, Chantal Gallant, Jaideep Pannu, AustinObiajunwa, Ashlee Allan. Smriti: Excellent student, cheerful, helps others, workson the 'Toast program'. Stephanie: Tops academically (straight A's), fine arts(musician-strings), rowing club. Chantal: Excellent student, fine arts (dancer),great sense of humor. (Jaideep), Austin: Excellent student, academics, fine arts,community service. Ashlee: Excellent student, helps fellow students,environmental concerns, helps raise funds for the Umbrella Society.Austin spoke on behalf of Spectrum. Austin is an amazing actor who plays leadroles in musicals. He believes people should be cheerful and enjoy life. Thereshould be a place for everyone and Spectrum makes that possible. Austinbelieves Spectrum is an amazing place in which to grow.S.T.Willis (GAP): Principal Deb Whitten introduced the three students from S.J.Willis. This was the first year that S.J. Willis has taken part in StudentRecognition Day. Ms. Whitten said their school offers a general alternativeprogram which enables students to complete their education up to and includinggrade 12. They also offer courses in trades such as carpentry, life skills, socialwork, etc. The students were Rayna Green, Asheley Seymour and ArielleOuellette. Rayna is studying Carpentry and plans to go into this trade. Asheleylikes working with people and is taking a course in Social Work. Arielle, speakerfor S,J. Willis, is taking courses which will enable her to become a Legal OfficeSecretary. Arielle said that all three students attending have sons. She said theywere pleased to be invited to take part in Student Recognition Day.

The Kiwanis Club of Victoria believes "Student Recognition Day" is the'High Light' program of the year. A number of organizations work together forconsiderable time to enable this event to happen. We thank the Board of SchoolTrustees and staff for their cooperation in the organizing of the SecondarySchools involved, the School Administrators for their preparation and selectionof the outstanding Students attending and especially the Students for providingthe interesting, positive content of the program.

We thank the Cedar hill Golf Course for providing the facility andLuncheon for 2013.
