Seabird Airlines, the firstcompany to implement sea/air

multimodal transportation inTurkey, began offering flightservices to major tourism centres inthe Aegean and the Mediterraneancoasts on June 28, 2012. Providingservices with seaplanes having 19passenger capacity, Seabird offersscheduled shuttle services betweenIstanbul and Alacati on each day ofthe week, and between Istanbul andBozcaada on 4 days a week. Theairlines will include shuttle servicesbetween Alacati and Bodrum asfrom July 15.

international shipbrokers’conferences and globalmaritime programs in anumber of countries, was heldin Istanbul.

The first Bosphorus ShipBrokers’ Dinner 2012, whichis to be organized by the ShipBrokers Association of Turkeybiennially, was held on June29. Held at Halic KongressCentre, the event was attendedby around 1,200 guests fromall around the world.

Pinar Kalkavan Sesel,President of the Ship BrokersAssociation of Turkey, whodelivered the opening speech,said they realized a dream theyhad 2 years before. Suat HayriAka, Vice Undersecretary forMinistry of Transport,Maritime andCommunications, talked aboutthe importance of the shipbrokerage services, statingthat there were more shipbrokers than owners andcharterers in the world.

Many other events were heldby companies for foreignguests, who came to Istanbulfor the dinner. One of themwas a yacht cruise at theBosphorus (Istanbul Strait) ofAlpina Shipping.

The Heybeliada PrincessIslands Museum hosts two

interesting exhibitions at atime when the Sea ofMarmara, which has aprivileged position amongmany seas around the globe interms of fauna and floravarieties, experiencesdifficulties in breathing due tothe pollution arising frommetropolization, andadditionally the wastes carriedby the Danube River. One ofthe exhibitions called “There islife in Marmara, for the timebeing” aims to draw attentionto the living beings that canlive in the Sea of Marmaratoday, and the other exhibitioncalled “Reflections from Halki:The Island in the postcards”shows the life and architectureon the Prince’s Islands in thebeginning of the 20th century.

Curated by diver Serco Eksiyan(video) and by underwaterphotographer and diving trainerAtes Evirgen, the “There is lifein Marmara, for the timebeing” exhibition consists of 80colour underwater photographsand video installations,displaying the pollution in theSea of Marmara.

Variety of marine species,described by Eksiyan as“remainders”, is extremelystriking. The exhibition to beheld in the quay area onHeybeliada will also containworkshops with the themes

“Should we be afraid ofsharks?”, “What colour is thejellyfish?”, “Have you everseen starfish?”, “Areseahorses fish?”, “Aredolphins fish?” for childrenduring the summer season.

Curated by Halil Gokman, the“Reflections from Halki: TheIsland in the postcards”exhibition was designed bySera Dink. Held at IsmetInonu Mansion, the exhibitionconsists of postcards collectedover a period of approximately15 years. The collection ofpostcards printed over theperiod ranging from the end ofthe 19th century to the mid-20th century witnesses a quiteimportant period of Turkey inpolitical and cultural terms.

Curator Gokman summarizesthis period as follows: “Think ofa period, when Huseyin RahmiGurpinar writes his novels, andNurullah Berk attends primaryschool on the island. Aziz Nesinis only a little child… WhileNazim Hikmet and Necip Fazilreceived naval education intheir uniforms at the NavalSchool located right next to thequay, Yahya Kemal andHamdullah Suphi were theirteachers... The Halki Seminarybuilt on top of a hill educatesmany senior religiousfunctionaries, including thecurrent Istanbul GreekOrthodox PatriarchBartholomew...”

Rahmi Koc Museum added anew one to its original guests

such as M/V Fenerbahce ship,Tekel 15 single-masted sailboat,Liman2 tugboat, and 1961amphicar: 119-year-old British-built steam-boat named “Ysolt”.Built in the UK in 1839, Ysolt hasa tragic story. Built by G.P.Russell, a Southamptonbusinessman, for SimpsonStrickland & Co., and known as‘steam launch’, Ysolt had beenused as an office, and thereforeleft stationary for many years.Then, she sailed very longdistances with her new owner, butthis time, she was left to achannel as many other boatsduring the World War II. After ashort time, the boat was used as afloating-home by her new owners.And finally, she was left along for40 years... until she was found bythe consultants of the Rahmi KocMuseum in Scotland in 2008. Shewas then taken to RMK Shipyardin Turkey for restoration thatwould last 4 years. Ultimately, shehas regained her past splendour.

The steamboat was taken fromTuzla to the Golden Horn, wherethe Rahmi Koc Museum islocated, after 5-hours of sail,which was also participated in byMr. Rahmi Koc, the Honorary

Chairman of Koc Holding, on June8, 2012, and included in themarine treasures of the Museumafter a press conference, alsoattended by Mark William, whowas introduced by Mr. Rahmi Kocas “the only steam engine expertin the world”. In his speech hedelivered following inclusion of theboat to the museum, Rahmi Kocsaid, “We do not have the heartto keep her in the sea, for we donot want Ysolt to corrode. Thefact that her keel is covered withcopper influences this decision, forthe steel boats at the harbour maycause the boat to corrode due tochemical reaction with copper. Wewill dote upon her at the Museum.I very much wanted to bring Ysolt to the Museum in theGolden Horn by sea. Even, I hadtold Mark William that I wantedto be on board on her voyage tothe Museum. Built with the moststate-of-the-art technology of thetime, Ysolt is a boat just like aviolin. She was one of the fasteststeamboats of her time. She hasregained her old grandeur after a series of maintenance and repair works.”

The ceremony for the SeventhGolden Anchor Awards

organized jointly by Dunya-Persembe Rotasi and DenizNews Agency, was held atAtakoy Sheraton Hotel. Theceremony was attended by manyguests including Koji Sekimizu,Secretary General, InternationalMaritime Organization (IMO).Turkish Minister of Transportand Communications BinaliYildirim did not participate inthe ceremony, even though it hadbeen announced that he would,but his video message wasplayed. In his message MinisterYildirim said he was unable toparticipate in the ceremony dueto reasons beyond his control,and congratulated the winnersand the organization committee.

Seventh “Golden Anchor” Awards “Alt›n Ç›pa”lar Sahiplerini Buldu

ABS Istanbul Officeorganized a free seminar

on “Energy Efficiency for theMarine Industry” whichreceived wide attendance dueto the importance of topic inthe prolonged weak marketconditions and increasing fuelprices. Most projectionssuggest that fuel cost willincrease further; increasing theincentive to reduce fuel usageand emissions. The presentmarket situation for most shipsleads to pay more attention toenergy efficiency.

The ABS seminar aimed toprovide owners, operators andother marine industrypersonnel with an awarenessand understanding ofaddressing energy efficiency.

An overview on ship energyefficiency presented by JohnnyEliasson. The IMO’s EnergyEfficiency Design Index(EEDI) and the technologiesavailable for reducing energyconsumption and CO2emissions were discussed.

Eliasson, in particular,described the efforts to controlbiofouling along with thepractical development of aShip Energy EfficiencyManagement Plan (SEEMP).

Jason Boulter addressed ISO50001:2011 which is the newinternational standard forestablishing, implementing,maintaining and improving acompany-wide energymanagement system. Boulterintroduced the standard anddiscussed how it may besuccessfully applied to ashipping company.

In the final session, ThomasKreissi from ABS NauticalSystems demonstrated how thenew Energy andEnvironmental modules withinNS5 Enterprise can improveenergy and environmentalmanagement for ship operatorsby assisting with operationaldecision support and bystreamlining data collectionand reporting.

yasa koflullar› ve artan yak›t fi-yatlar› yüzünden son derece bü-yük önem tafl›mas› dolay›s›ylayo¤un bir kat›l›ma sahne olan“Deniz Sektörü için Enerji Ve-rimlili¤i” bafll›kl› bir seminer dü-zenledi. Yap›lan öngörülerin bü-yük bir ço¤unlu¤u, yak›t fiyatla-r›n›n daha da yükselece¤i ve bu-nun yak›t kullan›m› ile emisyon-lar›n azalt›lmas›na yönelik teflvi-ki artt›raca¤› yönündeydi. Birçokgemi için piyasan›n mevcut duru-mu, enerji verimlili¤ine daha faz-la önem verilmesine yol aç›yor.

ABS taraf›ndan sunulan semi-ner; armatörler, iflletmeciler vedi¤er deniz sektörü personelineenerji verimlili¤i konusunda bil-gi verme ve bilinçlendirme ama-c›n› tafl›yordu.

Johnny Eliasson taraf›ndan ge-milerin enerji verimlili¤i ile ilgi-li genel bilgilerin sunuldu¤u et-kinlikte, Dünya Denizcilik Örgü-tü’nün (IMO) Enerji Verimlili¤iDizayn Endeksi (EEDI) ve ener-ji tüketimi ile CO2 emisyonlar›-n›n azalt›lmas›na yönelik mev-cut teknolojiler hakk›nda da bil-giler verildi. Eliasson özelliklebiyolojik kirlili¤in kontrolününyan› s›ra, Gemi Enerji Verimlili-¤i Yönetim Plan›n›n (SEEMP)pratik olarak gelifltirilmesineyönelik çabalardan bahsetti.

Jason Boulter, flirket çap›nda birenerji yönetim sisteminin kurul-mas›, uygulanmas›, muhafazaedilmesi ve gelifltirilmesine yöne-lik yeni uluslararas› bir standartolan ISO 50001:2011 ile ilgilibilgiler verdi. Boulter standard›tan›tt›ktan sonra da, denizcilikflirketlerine nas›l baflar›l› bir fle-kilde uygulanabilece¤ini anlatt›.

Son oturumda, ABD NauticalSystems flirketinden ThomasKreissi, NS5 Enterprise dahi-lindeki yeni Enerji ve Çevre mo-düllerinin, operasyonel karardeste¤i sunarak ve veri topla-ma, raporlama ifllemlerini ko-laylaflt›rarak enerji ve çevre yö-netimini nas›l gelifltirebilece¤i-ni örneklerle anlatt›.
