Parenting with PowerScripture of the week: If anyone

speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. ~ 1 Peter 4:11

5 Keys to Good Communication

Communication is at the centre of all relationships. Close-ness is communicated in many ways and people give and re-ceive love differently. Five levels of communication provide opportunities for increased closeness in family life. Each level serves an important role for growing deeper. If tension and stress dominate your relationship with your child, start work-ing through these communication levels and you’ll begin to see significant change take place.

1. Greetings are the oil that keep relationships cordial. Hug-ging your children as part of a greeting or welcoming them to breakfast in the morning makes an important statement about the value of your relationship.

2. Exchanging information about our lives helps people know what’s going on and contributes to a sense of connect-edness. As you go through your day, think of a couple of inter-esting things you could share with your child.

3. Sharing opinions and judgements is the next level. Some people are hesitant to share their opinions because they feel like they’ll have to back them up or face an argument. Look for ways to affirm your children. “That makes sense” can be an encouraging statement even if you disagree. “Thank you for sharing your opinion with me,” can be a statement that en-courages openness.

4. Communicating emotions takes us another level deeper. Facts and opinions often have emotions hidden behind them. “I bet that hurt” or “I can tell you’re excited about that,” ac-knowledges feelings your child might be experiencing.

5. Sharing spiritually brings an amazing amount of close-ness into a relationship. Praying together, sharing what God is teaching you, enjoying worship together, and having a sense of spiritual fellowship are all ways to enjoy the deepest lev-el of communication. As you strengthen your spiritual lives together, you’ll see more and more opportunities to discuss heart issues.

Strategy for the week: All five levels of communication are important. You can’t skip the first few and still experience close-ness. Look for opportunities to experience all levels with your children. How we communicate is extremely important. Our words can injure or heal, condemn or uplift, and be true or de-ceitful. This week teach children to control their anger by speak-ing gently without shouting and to think before they speak. Communicate to them that they will be listened to when they are being rational and controlled.

SecondaryLife’s Journey

Sometimes life takes us on some un-expected journeys. I was speaking with a friend recently who is going through a tough time. My friend spoke of how impor-tant faith and trust in the Lord is and that it is important and possible to find joy in each day. What a fantastic, positive outlook. The writing below is encouraging -

What You Can Give To Life “I’m not sure what I want out of life.” Those were the words I

spoke to my high school guidance counsellor some 27 years ago. At that point life seemed to be a mysterious adventure that lay far beyond the security of high school. Little did I know then just how much of an adventure that next quarter of a century would be. It was full of ups and downs, joys and tragedies, triumphs and mistakes, laughter and pain, love and heartbreak. One thing is sure, though, I definitely didn’t get what I wanted. And for that I am eternally grateful.

You see, God in His infinite wisdom always gave me what I needed and not what I thought I wanted. If I had gotten what I had wished for I would be a far more selfish and far less lov-ing person today. Instead God kept me growing, learning, and becoming the person I was meant to be. Life was my school, troubles were my teachers, and the twists and turns of this world were my courses. The classes continue on as well for me, you, and everyone here.

These days I try not to think of what I want out of life but think of what I can give to life instead. I strive to be a loving father, a caring friend, and a good neighbour. I seek to do what I can with what I have to make Earth a little more like Heaven and to show others that they can do the same. I try to share all the things I have learned these past 27 years: that God loves us more than we could ever dream, that we can love each other as well, and that when we do so we will have JOY no matter what struggles we may face or losses we may endure.

Take some time today then to think about what you can give to life. You are a beloved Child of God with unique talents, knowl-edge, and blessings. You can give this world so much love and do so much to help others. You can make this world and your soul a little better each day. And when you do so you will get what we all truly want out of life: sweet happiness.

~ Joseph J. Mazzella ~

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relationships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True mean-ing of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience. Too blessed to be stressed. Take time. Encourage a positive attitude. Never quit. Guidance. Help others. Enjoy time. Enjoy life. Happy holi-days. Shine. Spirit and Image. Look for the joy in each day.

PrimaryCelebration of 2011

It was a memorable time celebrating the students’ achieve-ments at the various Presentation times last week. Prep had a Celebration Morning last Friday and Years One to Three cel-ebrated last Monday night. The program consisted of items, awards and special certificates awarded to each child in Prep to Year Two.

Each class of Prep presented an item and the morning con-cluded with the year level presenting their favourite Christmas Carol, ‘Away in a Manger.’ The Year One item started with a ‘ver-sion’ of the Kerri-Anne Show directed by Jack Carroll 1C, where Kerri-Anne interviewed Mr Davis (Sebastian Du Preez 1C), Mrs Oswald (Aaliyah Perry 1N) and Mr Nicholson (Luke Johnstone 1J) about the ‘Good News’ before the Year ones sang, ‘Joy To The World.’ Our Year Two students presented an item entitled, ‘The Golden Rule’ taken from Matthew 7:12 which reminded us that ‘in everything, do unto others what you would have them do to you.’

Every child in P-2 received a special certificate recognising qualities of outstanding Christian Character and academic achievement. A trophy was awarded for Christian Character, and medallions were awarded for academic achievement, dili-gent application to studies, faithful service, improvement in achievement, information technology, music and physical edu-cation. A Chess award was also given to Justin Park (2F). All the students are to be congratulated for their fine effort throughout the year. Thank you to all the parents for their support and at-tendance at the various Celebration of 2011 Presentations.
