High School Presentation Night

“Educating students in Christian leadership for tomorrow’s generation”

If you wish to order photos from high school presentation night, proofs from Pixi Photography will be in the high school office Friday 9 November.

We had a wonderful time on Tuesday night at both the Middle School and the Senior School Presentation evening, celebrating all our academic, sporting and cultural successes this year. Congratulations to all our students who were recognised for their outstanding efforts this year.

This year’s Rock Eisteddfod entry was performed at both sessions and the wonderful vibrancy of the dancers, music and the magnifi-cent props were enjoyed by everyone!

Our Principal, Mr Davis presented the House Cup to the winning house which was taken out by Newton this year. House Captains Emily Carey and Matthew Kluver proudly collected the trophy and held it up victoriously. Well done, Newton!

Exploring KoalasFollowing on from a trip to Fleay’s Wildlife Park, the children

in Koalas have been looking at the ways Australian Aborigines have related to their natural environment over time. Native animals have been represented in a variety of art forms using charcoal and natural pigment/bush materials from around about. The children are enjoying exploring through mixed media, using natural earth colours.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.”

1 Peter 1:22

Connecting EmotionallyMaking a heart connection with a child is a special part of

parenting. One reason connecting emotionally is so important is that the heart is a person’s spiritual centre; that’s why God chooses to live there. It’s also where parents can impact their children spiritually. When you connect with your children on an emotional level, they’re more willing to listen to spiritual truth and less resistant to your leadership.

When we ask children to whom they talk when they’re upset, answers vary greatly. Some children talk to their friends, their parents, other family members, youth leaders or teachers. Some children don’t feel comfortable talking about their problems with anyone. Most children lack emotional coordination and are awkward about their feelings. It takes a patient parent to work with a child who is inexperienced in the emotion department. These children need a parent willing to draw them out and pursue greater understanding.

In 1 Peter 1:22, Peter tells believers how to have closer relationships, “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.” That’s a helpful command for parents, too. Mums and dads tend to want to keep things moving with the day organised and on track. Parents must continually evaluate their choices and decide what issues are most important in family life. As you make those tough trade-offs, be careful not to minimize the value of time well spent on relationship with your children. Connecting emotionally takes time, but the reward of closer family relationships is great.

Strategy for the week: Children want to know they are valued and listened to. As you connect with your child they also need to know that you are their teacher and as such can see where they need assistance to develop. Talking about issues with your child, drawing them out and listening will help you gain a better understanding of where they are headed. You will then be able to begin the strategies needed for encouraging them toward Godly thinking and values.

SecondaryPoetry

Two poems to lift and encourage you. No more to be said – they speak for themselves.

Help Me, Jesus

Help me, Jesus, to seek Your sweet faceand to navigate life at a compassionate pace.

Teach me respect for my fellow man;that when he’s in need, to reach out my hand.

Infuse me with courage when I am too weak, and grant me Your wisdom whenever I speak.

When the world around me seems cold and so bleak, let me find, in Your name, the comfort I seek.

Lift up the burdens that I cannot bear.Place Your hand on my shoulder to show You are there.

Open my eyes, Lord, allow me to seethe purpose in life You intended for me.

May I always be grateful for blessings receivedand wisely reject all attempts to deceive.

Let me bask in the warmth of Your never-ending story, secure in Your promise of Heaven’s great glory.

~ Linda Gleason ~

Today Poem“What I do today is very important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.”

Outside my window, a new day I see, And only I can determine what kind of day it will be.

It can be busy and sunny, laughing and happy, Or boring and cold… gray and unhappy.

My own state of mind is the determining key, For I am only the person I let myself be.

I can be thoughtful and do all I can to help, Or be selfish and think just of myself.

I can enjoy what I do and make it seem fun, Or gripe and complain and make it hard on someone.

I can be patient with those who may not understand, Or belittle and hurt them as much as I can.

But I have faith in myself and believe what I say, And I personally intend to make the best of each day.

[ Author unknown -- received from Catriona B. ]

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. Know who you are in Christ. Nurture compassion. Have a chuckle. Attitudes are habits. Courage. Recognise your heroes. A disciplined tongue. No strings attached. The Difference - Value.

~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Sport NewsNews from the King’s Locker Room WEEK 5

Swimming is BACK! This term we have seen our swimmers back in the pool

making a splash. As the end of year Primary Swimming Carnival approaches, our swimmers are taking advantage of the extra training provided. I have been overwhelmed with the number of students turning up each week. In total there have been just over 60 swimmers who have consistently attended the early morning training. From the first week our swimmers have been working on the basics. I have seen big improvements across the squad with our dives, streamline, turns and finishes. Swimmers are working hard each week on their drills to further improve their strokes. Each week we have focused on a different stroke and worked on our relay changeovers.

This term we have divided the program into three different squads. This gives our students the chance to train in the right environment for the level they are at. Our Bronze Squad is coached by Marc Fraser-Bell, Silver Squad by Taylor Matthew Durso and I am taking the Gold Squad. Here is a little bit about our new coaches:

I have been very impressed with both Marc and Taylor. We are lucky to have two experienced coaches on board. I would also like to thank all the parents for bringing their children each week. I am looking forward to the upcoming carnival. Keep up the good work swimmers!

Swimmer of the week: Congratulations to Ashleigh

Evans of 7F. Ashleigh has consistently shown excellent technique in the water. She always pushes off the wall in a perfect streamlined position and looks at challenging herself. Keep up the good work Ashleigh.

Keep kicking,Mr Foster

TRACK TALK

This is my first newsletter article of Term 4, so I will recap every-thing that’s been going on regarding Kings Athletics & Running Club.

KATS TrainingAs expected, the number of usual attendees from our 9 year

olds and above has begun to lessen, now that the competitive end of the year is over and done with, but it’s great to see that ouryoungsters(Years2-3)arestillshowingup,keenasmustard,each session. My main focus with these young ones is very gen-eral and non-specific athletics training. For example, designing obstacle courses and other game-type exercises that combine all five biomotor qualities (speed, power, strength, endurance,andcoordination),sothattheydevelopafoundationofFUNda-mental skills that will become very useful later on in their ath-letic endeavours at King’s. As for our older squad members who continue to show up each week, it is very satisfying for me and the rest of the coaching staff that you are still showing up. I very much look forward for this to continue next year. Next week will be our last session for the KATS program, and I’ve promised to get the high jump bags out for that one, but I also want to include some games into the session as well, so that everyone walks away from the KATS program for the year on a big high.

Running ClubWell so far this term, I have had the privilege to conduct this

session alongside our King’s Cross Country Coordinator, Mr Jar-rod Stephens. The session is primarily aimed at preparing our youngerstudents (Years2-6) for the2013schoolcrosscountryseason. Before I speak any further, I must advise all the parents out there that this is not our actual periodised program for next season, it is far too early for the specifics for 2013, but what we are currently working on is developing single leg stability, general running technique through drills, and then heading out to the sports oval to implement them into some general interval train-ing. Cross country is a very daunting activity for the very young students, 1km to them seems like 10km to an adult, and so it is our goal in these sessions to prepare our young ones to be able to cope with the training for next year, both physically and men-tally. Already I am beginning to see some big improvements in coordination, technique, and fitness, and am very excited to see how the next generation of King’s APS students will go in 2013.

Yours in Sport,

James Clark,King’s Head Athletics & Cross Country Coach

Ashleigh Evans

Outstanding Achievements

Laura LovettLaura (9Z) has been in Toowoomba

playing cricket at the state championships and from this carnival she was chosen in theU15sQLDCricketteamtocompeteinthe Australian Championships in Sydney on 28 Nov – 4 Dec 2012. Laura and her team had a great time at the carnival coming 2nd overall.

Loren LondonMy apologies to Loren (10T) who is

one of our athletics superstars. When we mentioned last week in the newsletter how our students went at state, we failed to mention that Loren also won gold in the 17-19 years 4 x 100m relay, substituting for a missing runner, and bronze in the triple jump and 6th in the long jump.

Loren has decided not to go to the Australian All Schools Championships. Instead she will compete in the heptathlon in the Queensland All Schools Combined Events Championships. If she is successful she will aim for the national Combined Events Championships. She is also aiming for the Queensland and Australian Juniors Track & Field Championships in the New Year. We wish her well in her endeavours.

Sam MooreSam (10Z) has been selected for the

U18 Gold Coast Basketball team. Theyhad a record number of boys try out in this division this year, and they were put through their paces as it was such a tough selection. Sam also was asked to try out for the Qld State Basketball team, but as they train in Brisbane it was too hard for him to travel up and down a few times each week. We are very proud of Sam’s efforts and wish him well.

Taisha MartinTaisha (8Z) received the Gold Coast

Academy of Sport encouragement award for Beach Volleyball at Royal Pines last week. Taisha has worked very hard this year and has a lot of potential. We look forward to seeing her shine next year in the APS competition.

Victor DaroaOneofourinternationalstudents,VictorDaroa(10Z),tookpart

in tryouts for thePapuaNewGuineaU19boys basketball squad when he went home to PNG during his last semester holidays. Victor made the cut and was selected and will be taking part in the FIBA Pacific Youth Tournament (formerly,FIBAOceaniaYouthTournament) in Churchill, Victoria 24 Nov - 2 Dec 2012! Victor’s family are very happy with his achievement and so are we! His exposure to quality basketball training and competition, whilst living on the Coast has been a boost of confidence in his style of play and Victor will no doubt be a good ambassador for King’s and Papua New Guinea! Congratulations Victor!

Serve One AnotherQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

For you, brethren, were (indeed) called to freedom; only (do not let your) freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse (for selfishness), but through love you should serve one another. Galatians 5:13 (AMP)

In a practical sense I could illustrate this in the church setting. A new member in the church feels that he wants to give of his abilities and time in serving the Lord and so joins the body of ushers and helps in the church services on a Sunday. Soon others see his heart to serve and his care for the flock of God and they ask him whether or not he would like to oversee the home fellowship group that he attends on a Wednesday evening. Within months everyone can see that the group is growing and thriving, people are having their needs met and both discipleship and fellowship abound. Whilst he is still ushering and attending the home group, the zone pastor then asks this man if he would now be prepared to become an area leader looking after three of four home groups. This individual is multiplying the talents that God has given him and the fruit is strong, committed and cared-for Christians in his care. A number of our zone pastors in the church have progressed in this way, eventually becoming one of the shepherds over thousands. That is good fruit.

God has given you talents in a variety of areas - always use them for His glory.
