Early Learning ProgramsParenting with PowerScripture of the week: Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. ~ Proverbs 22:6

Children Outgrow Rules but Not Values

As children get older, parents gradually release control of decision-making and allow their kids greater freedom to make choices for themselves. Too much freedom too early can be disastrous, but too much control and then instant freedom can be dangerous as well.

The key to making good decisions has a lot to do with values, but children don’t get to hear about values as often. Children hear rules. If, when your kids are grow-ing up, you talk about the values behind the rules then when they have the freedom to make their own deci-sions, they’ll be able to do so with wisdom.

Children outgrow rules, but they don’t outgrow values. When kids are young you may not allow them to go down the street without an adult. When they get a little older they’ll have to check in and be home at a certain time. Those are rules but they come out of very important val-ues of safety and accountability. When a college student is invited to stay out late with her friends, those values from childhood will still ring true, and will help guide her to wise decisions.

Prepare now for your child’s future decision-making. What are the values behind the rules you’ve created? Share those values regularly as opportunities to teach your kids. Your children will carry the values on for the rest of their lives.

Strategy for the week: Children absorb messages of right and wrong from every teacher they have and every television program they watch. Teach your child to be media savvy, which will give them a tool for interpret-ing the messages thrown at them from every direction. Practice what you preach. By living your values children will see them in action and have a role model to identify with. Choose a different value to focus on each week.

~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

The Wild Side of LifeYou couldn’t contain the excitement last week as

Noah’s Ark children headed off on their trip to Dav-id Fleay’s Wildlife Park. For many it was their first time travelling on a bus. The park rangers gave them an awesome boardwalk experience, becoming fa-miliar with and sometimes handling our native wild-life! Christopher liked the snake “he was cold when I touched him” Millie liked following the ranger and seeing the trees and flowers. Eden liked the big star jumps the sugar glider made.

Who Do You Admire?

Recently our daughter and her hus-band celebrated the birth of their first child. When I saw the first photo of him after birth I immediately thought how much he looked like his dad. We often make the statement that a child is the spitting image of a parent. Here is an interesting explana-tion of the origin of the term ‘spitting image’.

A Spittin’ Image The doctor said to a new father, “You have a cute baby.” “I bet you say that to all the new parents,” smiled the

proud daddy. “No,” he replied, “just to those whose babies really are

good-looking.” “So what do you say to the others?” I say, “He’s the spittin’ image of you.” Do you suppose they teach that in medical school? I’m told that a young mother enlisted the help of a friend

in taking her infant identical twins to the doctor. Since the waiting area was full, the two women, each with a twin, were seated on opposite sides of the room. After a few min-utes someone commented, “It’s amazing how much those two babies look alike!”

The friend was quick to reply, “Well, they should. They have the same father.” I haven’t heard whether the misun-derstanding was ever straightened out.

With identical twins, it’s easy to see that they are the “spittin’ image” of each other. Actually, that term “spit-tin’ image” stems from an old misunderstanding itself. Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus stories, explained that when an American slave seemed to be say-ing, “spittin’ image,” he or she was actually saying, “spirit and image,” as: “’He’s the spi’it ‘n’ image of his daddy.” It meant more than they merely looked alike. Spirit and image - alike, inside and out.

And what makes it even more interesting is the ancient truth from the monk Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), who said, “What we love we shall grow to resemble.” Or put another way, we become the spi’it ‘n’ image of that which we hold dear. We are shaped by that which we admire most, and by the people we love most.

It works like this: Those who admire success may become “the image of success.” Those who admire ambition will, to even a casual observer, look ambitious, perhaps even driv-en. Those who admire and love the gentle saints of their faith will, more than likely, remind others of those same saints in their attitudes, words and actions. Day by day, we become the spi’it ‘n’ image of the people we befriend, admire and love. We are shaped by that which we admire most, and by the people we love most.

Who do you love and admire? What qualities draw you to them? And how can you bring more people like that into your life? ~ by Steve Goodier ~

Year 7 moving into High SchoolOn Monday I had the delightful experience of meeting all

the Year 7s who are enrolled for Year 8 next year. We ran the students through an introduction to High School pro-gram where they discovered how heavy texts books are, learnt to tie a tie, practiced using pad-locks which will be used on lockers next year, had a tour of the High School, played one of the Physical Education games used in Year 8 and had a lot of questions answered.

I hope your child has been talking to you about their concerns, hopes and dreams for High School. You should have received by mail the Year 8 Hand-book for 2012 by now. If you have not received this and you would like a copy you need to contact the Main Adminis-tration. It does have all the information for the first day of school in it.

It was a pleasure seeing the students in action today and I commend the hard work that Year 7 teachers have obvious-ly been doing with your son or daughter to help him/her prepare for next year.

~ Miss Venessa Lean, Dean of Middle Schooling

Ultimately the one person we should be aiming to be the ‘spittin image’ of when it comes to character is our Lord Jesus. He should be our ultimate example.

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience. Too blessed to be stressed. Take time. Encourage a positive at-titude. Never quit. Guidance. Help others. Enjoy time. En-joy life. Happy holidays. Shine. Spirit and Image.

Peter Eddowes finished 5th in the U/16 Shot Put and 8th in the U/16 Javelin.

Samantha Owen finished 14th overall in the U/15 Hurdles. This was really a great result after battling through injury for most of the season.

SecondaryThe Year 12 Art Show

Achtung! Warning King’s Christian College is about to un-leash some seriously talented art students onto the unsus-pecting public!

Wednesday night October the 26th saw Mr Jurin’s brilliant Year 12 art students display the results of all their hard work this year for the public to see.

The night was well attended by people from within and outside of the College and all were impressed by the high quality of the artwork.

A highlight of the night was an excellent speech given by talented local artist Amber Papenfus, herself a former King’s student, who spoke of her passion for art and dis-played some of her wonderful recent projects.

Throughout the night the many guests enjoyed perusing the fantastic art work, listening to Year 9 students Angela Hansen and Annie Kladnig skilfully play the piano, socialising and enjoying the beautiful food prepared by Mrs Lubbe and served by the Year 12 and 11 students.

The Art Show is an annual event and will next year be shown at the Robina Art Gallery.

Year 10 Dinner DanceOn Saturday, 22 October our Year 10 cohort

celebrated their year with a Dinner Dance aboard a luxury boat, the MV Imagine.

The boat departed at 7pm from Marina Mirage and cruised the Southport Broadwa-ter for three hours, whilst the students had a great time dancing and socializing with their peers. Finger food and soft drinks were served throughout the evening and one of the Year 10 students, Joshua Case enter-tained everyone with a 10-minute comedy show. Thereafter Mrs. Morgan addressed the students and imparted words of wisdom; giv-ing them valuable advice based on her own experience and walk with God.

The evening was very festive and students and teachers enjoyed interacting in a relaxed and social environment.

2011 QUEENSLAND SCHOOLS TEAMS CHESS

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Primary Open Division For three consecutive years our top prima-ry chess team have won not only the Gold Coast but also the Queensland Primary Schools Chess Championships. Daniel Lapitan won the top board prize and considering it was their first time at State Championships, Sam Shaw, Elijah McNamara and Jacob Chan all proved what chess champs they are. Our team have now proudly won the right to represent Queensland at the 2011 Aus-tralian Schools Chess Championships held at Knox Grammar School in Sydney on 3rd – 4th December 2011. Congratulations!

Secondary Open Division This year it was great to have our two top secondary chess teams qualify for the State Championships held at Somerville House last weekend. Our top team placed 2nd overall by only 1 point behind Brisbane Grammar. The team went into the event seeded 3rd and played more then 12 hours of intense chess over the two day event. Martin Jack had the biggest upset on the day by winning against the best secondary player who was more than 400 rating points higher. Matt Pyper individually played great chess and won his board prize. Our second team placed 13th overall. It was a great experience for the team, they all took on the challenge and showed great sportsmanship. Awesome effort!

Primary Girl’s Division

Four primary girl chess players headed up to Loreto College last Friday for the primary girl’s division. The team had a wonderful day, it was a very hard competition and they all gave it their best and placed 8th overall. The girls enjoyed playing chess against girls only. Well done girls!

I would like to thank all the parents in-volved for your invaluable support and with assisting our chess teams to Brisbane.
