Welcome to Term 3I hope you all enjoyed a refreshing holiday. Many of our students and staff travelled to Sydney for the Hillsong

Conference during the second week. As usual, the King’s group was one of the largest groups at the conference and there are many inspirational stories to come from it. If you know someone who went down, please ask them about their experience.

We have another full term coming up. Carnival Day and the 10 Year Reunion will be at the end of week 2. There will be more information about these events in this newsletter, on our website and our Facebook page.

Have a great Term 3.

Early Learning ProgramsParenting with Power

Scripture of the week: “A refusal to correct is a refusal to love; love your children by disciplining them.” Proverbs 13:24

The Most Common Parenting Question of All “What do I do when my children play up in the shop-

ping centre?” We all have stories from our own families and we’ve observed other children throw tantrums, run away, whine, complain or disobey in the store, usually when they are not getting what they want. At least part of the an-swer is that you don’t practise your discipline strategies in the grocery store as you do at home because your parent-ing skills are in full public view. That’s the final exam! You practise in the kitchen, bedroom, laundry and backyard when you are at home. Children need to learn how to han-dle disappointment at home first so they can accept a ‘no’ answer in the check out line. Our children need to learn to come when they’re called so that they’ll respond in public. Children who haven’t learned how to accept correction at home without a bad attitude will miserably fail the test when they have an audience at the shopping centre.

It may be helpful to look for ways to reproduce the gro-cery store situations at home, at the park and in other places so that children can learn positive routines to use in public. Talk about how to act at the bank, the library and the store. Teach your children the “No Touch Rule” and the “Don’t be Wild Rule” and practise them often. In the class-room, teachers give these instructions all the time.

It won’t be long before you will be able to take your young children into the Coles store with all those danger-ously beautiful things waiting to be touched. If you’ve prac-tised at home, then your children will do fine and people will say, “Oh what nicely behaved children you have.” Of course those people don’t realise how much work you’ve done to help your children develop the character to handle these temptations.

Strategy for the week: Going shopping will become easier as you teach your children at home. That doesn’t mean you won’t ever have a problem. In those times you have to do as best as you can, get what you need and get out of there, but the difficult times will be far fewer than the successful ones when you take time to practise at home. Vacation Care Fun at Noah’s Ark

The fun goes on, and on, and on at Noah’s Ark with an action-packed program provided for children during the winter break. Visits from “Awesome Adam” the magician, the RSPCA; and our favourite “Mr Tennis” were highlights, as well as “Mia the Muso”, entertain-ing on guitar. Baking was also popular (Mrs. Watsons’ famous scones) along with face painting, making neck-laces, plaster fun and camping. Thank goodness the fun doesn’t stop with our regular term program!

Stress Busters

Thursday, July 21, 2011 - Page 3

SecondaryThose of you who regularly read my articles will know

that I am a dog person as opposed to a cat person. A dog is a wonderful companion – always happy when you come home, ready for a play, ready to please and lots of fun. I believe they are great for relieving stress at the end of a busy day. Dogs are great!!

Four-Legged Comedians Here is a riddle for you. What is black, white and brown,

has eight legs, and can do 60 miles an hour down a car-peted hallway? Do you give up? The answer is two pup-pies playing together. Yes, we have a new puppy in the house named Lemmy. He came about when I mistakenly assumed that our male Saint Bernard was way too big to ever get our little female mixed-breed pregnant. Now at two months old Lemmy is living proof I was wrong. He is already as big as our six month old beagle pup Snoopy, and I am sure he will one day be as big as his dad too. Watching Lemmy and Snoopy charging down the hall al-ways brings a smile to my face. They chase, pant, and chew on each other. They bounce, roll, and run. They go faster and faster until their legs tangle and they end up in a pile of fur at the foot of the couch. I delight so much in the joy they bring. They remind me that the greatest happiness comes from a playful spirit and a loving heart. They remind me too that fur-filled carpets and teeth marked shoes are a small price to pay for a laughing soul. The theologian Karl Barth once said that “Laughter is the closest thing to the grace of God.” I thank God then for giving me so many four-legged comedians to grace my life. My house may be small and crowded but I always have a lot of furry heads to pet on. My furniture may be worn and fur covered but I can get a warm snuggle or slurp on the chin whenever I need one. My home may not be the neatest place but it is full of playful puppies and lots of laughter. I think God knew what He was doing when He brought dogs into the lives of people. Dogs help us to see that life is meant for joy. They help us to see that play can be just as important as work. They help us to see that happiness comes from within. And they help us to see that love and laughter are the greatest gifts of all. May you share them always with dogs and people alike.

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums. Find the joy. Defend the Australian way of life. Encourage goal setting. Be thankful. Bloom where you are. Develop resilience.

PrimaryEisteddfod Success

During term break (5/7 & 6/7), mum and dad drove me and my 12 year old brother, Lokman, to Sydney to join the Eisteddfod. We could not believe the systematic approach, the large number of competitors and the extremely high standard in Sydney.

In Piano Polyphony (17 yrs under), I came 3rd place and Lokman came 1st place. Wow! We beat the other 17 yr old competitors. The adjudicator said the other competitors played Bach’s pieces like museum except the two young ones (Lokman and myself).

In two duet sections, our pieces are not difficult enough, so we came 2nd place in 12 yrs under and 3rd place in 16 yrs under.

I received Highly Commended in Australian Piano (12 yrs under), 20th or 21st Century Piano (9 yrs under) and Pre 20th Century Piano (9 yrs under). They are the most com-petitive sections with around thirty competitors in each section. The learning process is more important in these three sections.

Finally, I should thank our parents for driving us 12 hours to Sydney and making our dream come true. My goal is the Sydney International Piano competition when I reach 16 years old.

God will keep His promises:Quote from Power New Testament

People and you yourself will eventually let you down. But Jesus Christ will never, never, never let you down. He is flawless! “Christ says ‘Yes’ to all of God’s promises. That’s why we have Christ to say ‘Amen’ for us to the glory of God.”

TXT4U SCHOOLS Behind the Bid Competition

King’s is currently participating in the Gold Coast’s bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and we want you to be a part of it.

Simply by collecting Gold Coast Bulletin and TXT4U mast-heads off the paper’s front cover each day and dropping them off to school admin or the main library, you can help support this bid and give our school the chance to win one of five flat-screen TVs!!

We love this competition and it would be fantastic to get as much support from the parents of King’s as we can. The comp runs until the start of September and you can hand in the mastheads each week or all together if easier.

Queensland Cross Country ChampionshipsWe congratulate Bernard Lierse who last weekend represented King’s at the Queensland Cross Country

Championships. Unfortunately, Bernard suffered an asthma attack on the 6km event but still managed to finish a creditable 38th, which is a fine result under the circumstances. On the final day of the event, being healthy once again he teamed with three South Coast students to finish 3rd in the 1500m relay event. We congratulate Bernard on his efforts to achieve to this elite level. Well done, Bernard.

Down Under Championships – Golden Success!Jade Brandt competed at the 2011 Down Under Championships on the Gold Coast from the 1st – 3rd July.

Jade came 1st in the 800m, 4 x 100m relay and 4 x 400m relay. This competition is against athletes from USA, PNG, NZ and NSW. This was a great result. Jade has recently moved from the cross country events to middle distance events on the track. By these signs Jade is making excellent progress. Great work, Jade!

Rowing SuccessLast weekend, 16 - 17th July, Emily and Max Carey represented King’s in the South Queensland Schools

Rowing Championships at the Kawana rowing facility on the Sunshine Coast. Twenty-one schools where repre-sented from Rockhampton to Northern NSW. It was a big regatta. King’s finished fourth in the medal tally just behind Trinity Lutheran College (3rd), St Josephs’ Nudgee College (2nd) and Coomera Anglican College (1st).

Emily Carey won five gold medals and two silver out of seven events where she competed against some of the best rowers in Australia and definitely the best from Queensland. Emily competed in Under 17 Single, Open Single, Year 11 Double, Open Double, Year 11 Quad, Open Quad and Open Four.

Max won a bronze in one of two events he competed in. Max competed in the Under 14 Quad and the Open Quad.

We congratulate both students on a fantastic effort. Well done!

Surfing Success – Pastor GuyThe College pastor, Guy Ormerod recently participated in the annual Burleigh board-riders event. Pastor

Guy competed against all contestants in the Burleigh club and took out the Open division against some of the best surfers on the Gold Coast. Pastor Guy is passionate about his surfing and he has clocked up many hours in the tube at Burleigh. Well done, Pastor!
