Afternoon Delights at Noah’s Ark

Noah’s Ark welcomed both continuing and new families to our class afternoon teas last week. Children enjoyed sharing afternoon tea with their mums and dads and new bonds of friendship were established as parents chatted with each other. Thank you to Katinka and Vanessa in Pos-sums and Fiona in Koalas for volunteering to be class co-ordinators for the year. We look forward to a Joeys parent volunteer also.

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: In your anger do not sin. ~ Ephesians 4:26

The Good Side of Anger

One of the issues that we need to remember is that an-ger in our children is good for identifying problems but not good for solving them. Unfortunately, many children (and parents) with anger issues don’t understand anger’s benefit and, as a result, end up feeling guilty about being angry, further complicating the emotional picture. It is important to understand that anger is not good as a re-sponse to problems. It usually builds walls, increases ten-sion and contributes to distance in relationships, however, we do believe that anger is good for identifying problems. Once you understand anger, you’ll be able to use it to your advantage to point out problems in life. Then you must move into another mode or plan to solve those problems.

Ephesians 4:26 says, “In your anger do not sin.” This verse

is just one that tells us that there is an anger that isn’t sinful. That’s great news. If you begin to use anger to identify the problems and then develop healthy solutions to address them, you’ll be using anger in a positive way. Many parents have given up hope, believing that they have lost the bat-tle with anger. They’re plagued with guilt about their emo-tions. Before you can improve your anger management or your child’s, you must first think rightly about anger.

Anger is good for identifying problems but not good for solving them.

Strategy for the week: This week’s focus is on identifying problems that are causing anger in both you and your child. Once the problem is identified then you can begin to work on solutions. Your child can also be challenged with any underly-ing character traits that are causing anger such as jealousy or selfishness.

GeneralChrist came on your account!Quote from Power New Testament

Jesus Christ had a purpose, a focus, and a finish line. He com-pleted his race, and the end result was that those who receive his love and forgiveness, in faith, will have eternal life. You are a sin-ner, but... “‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.’ This saying is true, and it can be trusted. I was the worst sinner of all!”

I thought this week, that we may have a look at various snippets of wisdom and encouragement that I have gleaned over the years.

Making Today BetterDevelop an attitude of gratitude.

Even when you are experiencing tough times, remember the blessings in your life. It’s like sprinkling sun-shine on a cloudy day.Encourage others.

When someone has a goal, most people point out the obstacles. Be the one to point out the possibilities.

Give sincere compliments. We all like to be remembered for our best moments.

Keep growing.Walk a different path. Take a class. Read something inspiring.

Unwrap the gift of forgiveness.Forgiveness is a blessing for the one who forgives as well as for

the one who is forgiven.Take care of yourself.

Exercise, eat a healthy diet and find some quiet moments.Sing and dance a little bit every day.

A merry heart is good for the soul.Do random acts of kindness.

The most fun is when the other person doesn’t know who did it.Treasure relationships.

Eat meals together, take walks, listen. Share laughter and tears. Make memories.Share your faith.

You can wish someone joy and peace and happy things, but when you share your faith - you’ve wished them everything.

ALICE GRAY Inspirational conference speaker

My faith demands that I do whatever I can, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.

– Jimmy CarterFive Tips for Staying Young1. Your mind is not old; keep developing it.2. Your humour is not over; keep enjoying it.3. Your strength is not gone; keep using it.4. Your opportunities have not vanished;

keep pursuing them.5. God is not dead; keep seeking Him.

Anaphylaxis Dear Parents,Across the college, we have a number of children who suffer

from life-threatening anaphylaxis. Although allergic reactions to food are common in children, severe life-threatening reac-tions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, for children who suffer food-induced anaphylaxis, the result could be fatal. Children at King’s may have severe reactions to a variety of prod-ucts including, but not limited to, nuts, fish, milk, eggs and latex. While we realise we can not control everything, we ask you to think carefully when preparing lunches and snacks for school, es-pecially in the prep and lower primary departments, where chil-dren love to share. We ask specifically that if possible you avoid packing peanut butter sandwiches or bars which contain nuts.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

Lost Property: MissionsHigh School - Parents please note that a great amount of uni-

form items and resources are being left around the school (i.e. footy boots, jumpers and hats).

We have noticed that a lot of the same students are coming in to claim lost items. We are now trialling a project to educate our students to value their possessions, by charging them $1 to claim back any lost items.

The money collected will go to help our missions work in Aus-tralia and overseas.

We hope this trial will encourage the children to think more about securing their possessions and the need to be responsible for them.

SecondaryYear 11 Camp

Wednesday 15 February 2012 saw 120 eager students (plus 14 equally as eager staff) head for YMCA Camp Warrawee for three days of challenge, adventure and growth.

Focused on the theme of “Being a Leader Worth Following”, our Year 11s were challenged to realise that they are leaders and that they need to ensure they are leaders worth following.

Students participated in the ‘Survivor Tribe Challenge’ where, over the course of the camp, they competed as part of their “tribe” (Pastoral Care Class) through a series of challenges ranging from group problem solving activities, tribal games, high ropes activities, canoeing, raft building, flying fox and lots more. After three days of fierce competition, bragging rights for this year’s

camp went to the Pink and Lime Tribes who proved too strong for the others.

Nights saw students participate in two leadership workshops where they were challenged by a number of college staff around the concepts of “What is Leadership?” and “Being a Leader Worth Following”, before playing a few games. Each night concluded with a chapel service where students were challenged through worship (capably led by our Year 11 Worship Band) and two awe-some messages brought by Pastor Guy.

All in all, Year 11 camp was an awesome experience for all in-volved. Special thanks must go to the teachers and Chaplaincy team who gave freely of their time to be involved in this camp, as well as to each student who attended for the enthusiasm and spirit that they brought to camp.

Sport NewsNews from the King’s Locker Room

Hi everyone,

KATSI would like to take this opportunity to give the launch of KATS a big plug. KATS stands for King’s Academy of Training and Sport. You

would have received in the mail, as well as it being in last week’s and this week’s newsletter, a flyer inviting all parents and students to a meeting followed by some nibbles on Wednesday 7 March from 1.10pm – 1.50pm. I encourage all parents to make the time and effort to come and hear about the exciting things that are happening in sport at King’s. You will be able to meet all the sports staff and outside coaches, plus hear about the pathways and development programs that we are setting up to ensure King’s becomes a dominant force in the APS and abroad. We will also be talking about our new Sporting Scholarship scheme as well as giving you a chance to give us feed-back. Please spread the word and I look forward to seeing you all there.

Making a SplashThe swimming season is well underway this year. With the London Olympics just around the corner it is great to see one of Australia’s

most successful sports thriving at age level here on the Gold Coast. Last Tuesday was the 24th annual Associated Private Schools (APS) Swimming Championships. This was again held at Somerset College Pool and we could not have asked for a better day. I would like to thank the staff that attended on the day for their outstanding efforts. The carnival ran very smoothly and without them carnivals like this would simply not happen. I would also like to thank all the parents who were able to come and support the team on the day.

I would like to congratulate all of the students in our APS swimming team who attended. I was very proud of their efforts, determina-tion and support for fellow teammates. From where I was sitting, King’s was the only school that cheered for their teammates in every single event. We had a total of 43 students who competed across the 50m events and three relays. There were a handful of swimmers who won or were placed in all of their events. This is a good sign for the future of our swimming team. As we build up the depth of swimmers across all age groups our overall points will be competitive amongst the top APS teams. I was very proud of swimmers on the day who were pushing themselves to get that extra place in their race to gain more points for the team. Well done to swimmers who also filled in for injured or absent swimmers.

Michael Bogatie was one of the stand out swimmers of the day. Winning the majority of his races and placing high in the others showed his talent across all four strokes. Michael was awarded the boys 14 years Age Champion and came very close to breaking a few records. Well done Michael. Some other great swims came from Taylor Rawlings, Adrian Gomm, Sebastian Torales, Thomas Otto, Dimitee Coventry, Emily Meuwissen and Denise Petcu.

The Aggregate Trophy for 2012 went to Emmanuel College with All Saints in 2nd and AB Paterson in 3rd. King’s finished up 7th only 74 points off 5th place. The points between teams this year was very close. For the future I want to stress the importance of attending the carnival if you have been selected in the team. At the end of the day, one swim can make a huge difference in the overall points. Both our girls and boys teams finished 6th.

Keep kicking.

Running Club Rant (Week 1)The school cross country training has kicked off, and our first two sessions have been a success. The weather for our first week has

been pretty dismal and wet, yet we have still been getting a great turn out of participants. This is exactly the type of culture I am trying to develop within this school, and look forward to more students (particularly more secondary students) coming along to join in. The first four weeks of this program is not extremely hard, in fact, any student with a general level of fitness would be able to get through these sessions. Please do not be deterred by thinking the training will be too difficult for you to handle, as this is not the case. However, as the weeks go by, the intensity of the training will increase, in order to continually stimulate improvements in fitness. Even if you are not a cross country runner, but participate in any other sports that require continual running (ie, soccer, footy, netball, etc), cross country training will make a drastic improvement in your fitness, and will have a positive carry-over onto the field of play.

Currently, we have been separating the primary schoolers from our high schoolers once the warm up has been completed and the specific running segments are about to get underway. This seems to be working quite well, however, after we have reached week 4 in our program, I will invite a handful of primary athletes who I believe have the ability to step up to run with the secondary squad. The second-ary training program is slightly longer and more advanced because their racing distances are longer and their bodies are more mature and developed, and thus, can handle a tougher program compared to the developing young students.

To all the students still considering joining in these sessions, I’d highly recommend it. There will be “lucrative incentives” for students who make the APS cross country team this year and even bigger rewards for King’s teams who manage to place top three at the APS cross country competition. So get all the fit athletes together in your grade, get down to cross country training and pull your King’s team through to a place at the APS cross country. Reap the benefits that the school is offering! You’d be silly not to!!!

And finally, to all those students who got up early this week to go to cross country training, I send my highest praises your way. It is this type of commitment that builds a successful athlete, and a successful team. I am certain that your efforts will be rewarded when race day comes!!

Yours in cross country,

~ James Clark, Head Cross Country/Athletics Coach

Regional Swimming CarnivalSeven students from the primary competed this week at the TSS swimming pool, in a bid to make the South Coast Regional Team.

Next week we will report on how the following students fared at this carnival. Megan Bogatie (8 events), Jasmyne Coventry (7 events), Kye Jefferies (3 events), Candice Richards (1 event), Jonathon Robertson (4 events), Jordan Sergis (1 event), Elijah Winnington (7 events).

Primary APS SportStudents will continue selection trials for their nominated sport on Thursdays during sport time. Winter sports include: Girls and boys hockey, football (soccer), tennis, volleyball/newcombeballGirls only netballBoys only rugby (walla, mini A mini B, midi)

IMPORTANT – Tackling has been introduced to Walla Rugby this year. As such all Year 4 boys playing rugby must have a mouthguard for training and games.

All students have the opportunity to trial in their first preference. If numbers are too high, some students will then trial in a team of their second or third choice of sports. Our aim is to fill all teams and keep everyone happy and participating in sport.

High School SportAs with the primary swimmers, we also have the high school swimmers competing this week at the TSS swimming pool in a bid to gain

selection on the South Coast team. We will report on these students next week.

Outstanding AchievementsMikayla SoperRecently Mikayla competed at the U18 water polo state champion-

ships. She is again off this week to the U17 Queensland School Girls State Championships in Toowoomba and has the honour of captaining this team for the event. I know she is quite proud of this considering she has been working her way up through the South Coast team since Year 8. If that isn’t enough, Mikayla will then compete the following weekend in the Open Women’s QLD Country Titles and we are fairly certain she is the youngest competitor by far, being only 16. She is also playing every weekend in Brisbane in the U18 Brisbane competition for the Barracudas versus teams from all around Queensland. Well done, Mikayla!! We are all very proud of you.

Keep letting me know if students are excelling in sport so we can cele-brate their wonderful achievements with the King’s community and also so I can keep a record for Colours and Sports Awards night. Either ring me at school or email me at [email protected]. Please give as many details as possible.

Mikayla scored an amazing 30 goals over the tournament at Toowoomba and her team won the plate!
