Your Editor,

Happy Halloween Key Clubbers!
Wow, just like summer flew
by in a blink of an eye, our first
month of school has vanished
before our very eyes, almost
like magic. Magic seems to
pertain a lot to our Key Club.
Not only is the service that we
provide our school, community,
and essentially the world magi-
cal, but this year’s Fall Rally
theme was the “Magic of Ser-
vice.”
When you really think about
it, what kind of magic is better
than the kind that we perform
almost every day in Key Club?
We use our “magic” (tools,
knowledge, and efforts) to pre-
vent diseases throughout the
world, help stop prematurity,
feed the hungry, and many,
many other things. Alright, so
we can’t pull a rabbit out of our
hat with this kind of magic, or
even make ourselves invisible.
Quite the opposite, the work
that we do makes us stand out
from any other Key Club in New
Jersey and we take pride in
saying that we are the Bloom-
field High School Key Club.
So, during our first month of
school, I hope that you all have
achieved some sense of what
we are and what we essentially
do. We are so much more than
just a club and this is some-
thing that should be recognized
in order for us to achieve our

Each month the executive
board assesses which member
(s) of the Key Club have been
the most active throughout the
previous month. This is ulti-
mately determined through the
calculation of hours each mem-
ber of the club has completed.
Once reviewing the candi-
dates for Member of the Month
and finalizing our decision, the
individual member(s) will re-
ceive a certificate explaining
their achievement of service
during the year. A member may
only be Member of the Month
once per year and at the con-
clusion of the year, the execu-
tive board will determine the
amount of hours each Member
of the Month has accumulated
throughout the year.
Once this has been com-
pleted, a Member of the Year
will be determined and shall be
awarded a prize that has yet to
be announced.
The October Members of
the Month are:
Patrick Dugan
&
Billy Miller
Congratulations to our winners!

Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner.
Both events have been Key
Club traditions for years. The
Haunted House is a time
when our club gets the
chance to reach out into the
community and show Bloom-
field what Key Club is all
about, as we dress up as
cowboys and ghosts in this
year’s Western Theme.
Once the Haunted House
is over, it’s time to jump into
planning for the Senior Citi-
zen Thanksgiving Dinner. The
Thanksgiving Dinner has also
Dear Key Clubbers,
Car wash, Wiffle Wars,
Fall Rally, Haunted House…
it’s clear that the past few
weeks have been incredibly
busy for BHS Key Club. In just
a month and a half, we’ve
had two successful events,
and got the chance to meet
with all the other Key Clubs in
New Jersey! But, we’re just
getting started.
In the coming month,
we’ll be holding the annual
Haunted House and Senior
been around for years, and is
known not only throughout
Bloomfield, but throughout
New Jersey. During the
Thanksgiving Dinner, the Key
Club invites senior citizens
from Bloomfield to come to
the BHS cafeteria for a
Thanksgiving meal. This gives
us the chance to entertain
and talk to the seniors, and
gives the seniors, who may
not have a place to go on the
holidays, a chance to enjoy a
Thanksgiving meal. Although
we’ve had to cancel this
event for the past couple
years because of construc-
tion, this year it’s back, and it
will be better than ever! This
event requires a lot of prepa-
ration and planning, so
please come out and lend a
hand!
Your President
Alex Gibson
For those of you who are
still trying to figure out what
this “Key Club” this is all
about, let me fill you in on
what you have become a part
of! Key Club is an interna-
tional organization comprised
of thousands of high school
students in over 25 different
countries. We are the largest
high school community ser-
vice organization in the
world! Our goal is to help
those in need throughout our
home, school, and commu-
nity. Bloomfield continues its
tradition of being the #1 club
in the New Jersey District of
Key Club International and on
occasion, places on an inter-
national level, which we were
fortunate to do this past sum-
mer when we were recog-
nized by receiving 3rd place
in Single Service for the Plati-
num Division. I am telling you
this because you should
know that this is the premier
organization to belong to in
our school and how our com-
mitment to serving our com-
munity is recognized both at
the local and international
level.
So you might be wonder-
ing how were are the #1 Key
Club in NJ?! Well, think about
what you have done since the
school year began and you
will start to understand what I
am talking about. September
was the usual routine for us
which included having a car
wash to raise money for our
district project, Children’s
Specialized Hospital, and
helping parents find their way
around school at Back to
School Night. We also had
some unexpected projects
come up like helping the
William Foley Jr. Football
League with their conces-
sions on one Saturday night.
In true Key Club spirit, you
guys jumped at the opportu-
nity to help people in our
community. While these
events were going on, our
Wiffle Ball committee worked
hard to ensure a successful
night of waffle ball mania
which proved to be a huge
success. We had 14 teams
participate and raised $700
for our district project.
On top of all of these
events, the executive board
has been working on prepar-
ing for our Haunted House
since this summer when our
theme was finally chosen!
Our planning meetings have
been very successful and I
am sure we will have a great
turnout on Saturday, October
20th when we transform the
civic center into an old west-
ern ghost town! Once again,
all of the proceeds will bene-
fit our district project.
Next week we will once
again be visiting elementary
A D V I S O R ’ S C O M M E N T S
schools to present our UNI-
CEF initiative to 5th and 6th
graders in Bloomfield. Also,
further down on the calendar,
I am very excited to say that
we will be bringing back a 25-
year tradition of our Senior
Citizen Thanksgiving Dinner
which will be at 1pm on the
Wednesday before Thanks-
giving. I hope everyone will
come out to experience a
traditional Bloomfield Key
Club event because I think
you will certainly begin to
understand what you are
doing as a member of this
superior organization. I hope
everyone ahs enjoyed being
in Key Club so far… if so tell a
friend to join!
Your Advisor
Mr. Cappello
It saddens me to write one of my last presidential addresses for the BHS Key club newslet-
ter. This time a year is always a bitter-sweet moment in every senior Key club members'
heart. Once DCON ends, so will the 2012-2013 service and so begins the new era in the key
club legacy. In just one short month after DCON the old board will pass on the torche to
the incoming board. April always acts as a transition month for our new board members.
However, I look forward to DCON also because it is a celebration of yet a other year of hard
work! I hope that our club places well amongst the many awards given at DCON and that
some of our members will receive scholarships. District Convention is a great chance for
general members and the up-coming board to get a better look at what Key club is all about.
Not to mention that DCON is so much fun!
March is all about our biggest event of the year: VOLLEYBALL MARATHON. All pro-
ceeds from the volleyball marathon go to the Tomorrows Children's Fund; an organization
that the BHS Key Club has donated to for many year. This year's volleyball marathon is
going to be one heck of an event! We will have free food, live music, video games, a volley-
ball tournament, badmitten tournament, basketball, open gym, and Just Dance! It's an eve-
rything in one kind of event. (So much so we are trying to rename it!) The Volleyball Mara-
thon is sure to be a huge success this year as we get the entire school community involved!
I'm excited just thinking about it!
Presidential Message
Its March Madness time everyone! I know most of you are probably thinking I am referring to basketball but this year Key Club will be sponsoring an old event with a new twist. For those of you who have been around a few years have probably heard of something called the Volleyball Mara-thon. Well, this year we will be putting a spin on this event which will include a wider variety of activities that are sure to peak everyone’s interest. The cost is $15 per person and all of the money raised will be donated to the Tomorrows Children’s Fund. This organization is truly remarkable in the way they embrace families of children with cancer and blood disorders to help them during this difficult time. We are honored to partner with such an important organization. So please tell all of your friends to attend this event!
The rest of March will continue to be busy with elections for next year’s board, Oakeside’s Easter Bunny Brunch, and all the preparations for District Convention. I am very excited to see the out-come of this year’s elections, as we have the greatest number of candidates in my 10 years as advisor. I hope that everyone takes this vote seriously as it will have a major impact on our club for next year. I hope everyone keeps participating in events because the service certainly hasn’t stopped. Keep attending meetings to find out about some new community service opportunities.
Kiwanis Bulletin
Spoiler Alert!!!: if you are
the one person out there who
loves Harry Potter and is still
holding out from reading the
seventh book (I don’t know
why… it’s awesome!), you
shouldn’t reach on (or else
you’ll be very disappointed!).
Many of you, most of you
in fact, do not know me. I’m
Kristin Szuhany, AKA Harry
Potter for this article. I’m a
seventh year in the Kiwanis
Organization (if you start my
first year of high school in
Key Club), holding the Corre-
sponding Secretarial position
during my 3rd and 4th years.
Now, I am captain (President)
of Circle K at the University of
Pennsylvania. As I’ve said, for
this article, I’ll be portrayed
as Harry Potter. Alright, I may
not have the lightning bolt
scar on my forehead
(although I have a comet-
shaped one on my knee…
does that count?) or messed
up short, black hair (but I do
have Harry’s awesome green
eyes!). But seriously, my ba-
sic purpose is to tell you how
much the Kiwanis Organiza-
tion from Key Club to my
three years of Circle K has
meant to me.
Key Club is like Dumble-
dore. Okay guys, don’t get
scared—I don't mean that
you’re dead (you’ll live on
forever in my heart)! I mean
that even though it’s gone to
me now, it’s taught me so
many lessons that I still use
today. It has taught me the
history of Hogwarts (the Ki-
wanis Organization, including
participation in the district)
and has given me the spells
(tools and knowledge) to be
able to conquer the Volde-
morts, Bellatrixes, and Mal-
foys of the world. Key Club
helped me grow as a person
while serving as a comfort to
me throughout high school. It
is sorely missed.
My first years at Hogwarts
(in the Key Club Organization)
also allowed me to develop
very close friendships. My
best friend Ron—Joanna—is
my partner in crime who has
been there from the very
beginning. Now she has also
continued in the Kiwanis
organization and is a seventh
year in the Rutgers Circle K
(she’s also captain!) and you
should be hearing from her
throughout the year as well.
(P.S. Joanna, if you read this,
even though I made you Ron,
you’re just as pretty and
smart as Hermione!)
Key Club also allowed me
to connect with Hagrid, or the
advisors. They were always
fun to be around yet helpful
and knowledgeable at the
same time. The experience
wouldn't have been the same
without them around, espe-
cially sneaking to their house
(Key Club office) under my
invisibility cloak during lunch
periods!
But since I did have to
move onto my older years, I
have developed a strong
relationship with Circle K (my
Page 3 V O L U M E X X I V , I S S U E I V
C I R C L E K C E N T E R : H A R R Y P O T T E R A N D T H E S E R V I C E R ’ S S T O N E
Ginny—okay I’m not in that
kind of love with Circle K, but
I do <3 it!). We first liked
each other during my 5th
year (freshman year of col-
lege) but we really bumped
up our relationship my 6th
year (sophomore year)—I
became president. Now,
we’re doing as great as ever
and we’re going to lots of
events such as weekly Quid-
ditch games (Magic Circle at
the Children’s Library where
we read to kids and do crafts
with them) and bigger events
like Triwizard Tournaments or
hunts for crumple snorkacks
(one-time events like Boo at
the Zoo or Philly Cares Day).
Although sometimes Circle K
and I fight (it keeps me ex-
tremely busy an on my toes),
we still love each other (at
least I love it!).
So, if you made it through
this without thinking I’m the
biggest dork in the world,
CONGRATULATIONS! If not,
it’s okay, I embrace my taped
-up glasses look (although I
don't have glasses in real
life). Just remember that you
should cherish your 1st
through 4th years at Hog-
warts because, as all us
Harry Potter buffs know, it
only gets more difficult from
the 5th year on! Remember
to listen to and appreciate
Hagrid, to be a strong mem-
ber of Dumbledore’s Army, to
keep your friendships close,
and not to let your experience
in Key Club be like Snape—
you didn’t know how good it
was until it was gone!
P.S. I guess next year
when I’m still writing articles
(hopefully!) for the Daily
Prophet (Key Words), I’ll have
to say that I’m an Auror!

K-Kids Fun Night Recap
The K-Kids lined up in ex-
citement as the event was
about the start. The relay
races set in the gym, obstacle
course ready in the pit, Just
Dance all set up, and
healthy food served; this
event was a huge success.
With over sixty K-Kids from
the elementary schools we
could not help but be ex-
cited to spend hours with
these future Key Clubbers!
Kids running around the
gym and rolling around the
scooters sure made their Fri-
day night. Even to those
parents who stayed, were
impressed how we were able
to entertain their kids for
such a long time. They
came up to us and told us
that what we were doing was
great. They even encouraged
us to continue the event for
the future. We made new
friends and taught the kids a
variety of ways to eat healthy.
We can’t wait to do this
event again next year!

WELCOME TO THE
FAMILY!!!
Greetings and welcome to
new and returning Key Club
members for the 2007-2008
school year! On behalf of the
Kiwanis Club of Bloomfield,
the parent organization of
Key Club, I would like to take
this opportunity to extend our
wishes for a fun and success-
ful year!
Like most families, ours is
one steeped in traditions.
You should be proud (I know
Kiwanis is!) that you are part
of a tradition of excellence
that goes back over eighty
years. Bloomfield High
School Key Club has been
recognized on the state, na-
tional and international level
for excellence on the part of
its student and faculty lead-
ers. Moreover, year after year
your club has distinguished
itself for its dedication and
service to the children of the
world.
The Bloomfield Kiwanis
Club is looking forward to our
meeting on October 25th. At
this time, officers from the
Key Club will be introduced
and share their experiences
and accomplishments from
this year’s International Con-
vention. Again, like a family,
we will celebrate your suc-
cess. Thank you for all you do
to make us proud and bring
pride to our school and com-
munity.
Love,
Mrs. Todaro

Key Leader was held form
September 28th-30th at the
Baptist Camp in Lebanon, NJ.
Editor, Dave Rodrigues, and
myself were among those in
attendance, and I know we
had a good time. The lead
facilitator, Kristin Skarie,
hailed from Wisconsin to
participate in her 10th Key
Leader Program. This was my
first time attending Key
Leader and I must say it was
a very positive and enjoyable
experience. In addition to
learning about the five keys
to excellence—integrity,
growth, respect, building your
community, and pursuing
excellence, around 50 Key
Clubbers and even some non
Key Clubbers from NJ and PA
all experienced a fun-filled
weekend.
We participated in many
teambuilding activities, lis-
tened to some inspirational
stories, created skits to dis-
play the keys to excellence,
debated over ethical/
unethical issues, learned
about prioritizing our values,
and so much more! On Satur-
day night we all sat around a
fire and explained how the
weekend affected us. It was
clear to see that each atten-
dee got a lot out of the week-
end. Kristin Skarie was
moved by this, even though
she has led many other Key
Leader programs in the past.
She admitted to becoming re-
inspired by all of us. Key
Leader not only helped me
grow as a leader, it also intro-
duced me to other Key Club-
bers throughout the state
(mostly from MAST!) and it
was a much needed opportu-
nity to slow down and relax
for a few days of fun. Though
this was my last opportunity
to attend Key Leader, I would
definitely encourage you all
to attend Key Leader next
year, and to encourage oth-
ers to join you as well.

March Madness
On March 22nd we will be holding our annual Volleyball Mara-
thon. However, we renamed it to March Madness. Why? Simple,
because there is going to be a lot going on than just a volleyball
tournament. In the pit, we will have a badminton tournament go-
ing on! Also, we will have our video games as always for those who
enjoy a race in Mario Kart. Just like our Coffee House, we will
have a miniature one going on in the cafeteria so any bands or mu-
sicians are able to play. Just sign up in the Key Club Office. Also,
there will be FREE food. All for the price of $15. Sounds like a
really good bargain to me. All proceeds will go to the Tomorrows
Children’s Fund. Which is a great organization, where they use
the money towards the hospitals for the kids. Great events for a
great organization all for a cheap price? Come by to celebrate
March Madness with the Key Club!

Last night, I got to have a
little chat with a senior: Ra-
chel Moseson and got her
opinion on many things per-
taining to her position and
the BHS Key Club.
Dave: What’s your position on
the board and what is re-
quired of you to fulfill that
position?
Rachel: I am the club treas-
urer and my job is to collect
the membership dues and
send them into the district.
Along with this, I am ex-
pected to keep track of all of
the profits that are made
through any Key Club event.
Dave: What event(s) do you
think will be most profitable
this year? Which event(s) are
you most looking forward to
having?
Rachel: Well, from past ex-
perience, I know for a fact
that the Haunted House and
Stall Day will rake in some
tremendous profits to go
towards various causes. I
think I’m most looking for-
ward to promoting advocacy
for the tragedy that is hap-
pening in Darfur.
Dave: You finally hold an
executive position! What are
you most looking forward to
in your term?
Rachel: To be honest, I’d
have to say going to conven-
tion and gaining the recogni-
tion we deserve for the hard
work we put forth throughout
the year.
Dave: Do you have any ad-
vice for any Key Clubbers
looking to run for treasurer in
the future?
Rachel: Keep track of every-
thing immediately! Don’t be
afraid to ask for help and be
comfortable with handling
large sums of money.
Hey Key Clubbers! As you
can see, November is fast
approaching as the Haunted
House grows nearer. To most
past Key Clubbers, this is
also a time to recall our an-
nual trip to Broadway to see
a musical.
Last year’s play was Lion
King and we’d have to say
that’s a pretty tough act to
beat. But, through careful
consideration and a massive
amount of “reply all’s” in
emails, the executive board
has finally decided to make
this year’s musical to see:
HAIRSPRAY!
Many people may not
know the story of Hairspray
and many may due to the
recent debut of the movie
adaptation starring John Tra-
volta, Amanda Bynes, and
Queen Latifa. I won’t give too
much away, but I will say that
this is one play that you do
not want to miss out on!
If you’re knew to the club,
you’re probably wondering,
okay… so what’s the catch?
Well, there is one catch.
In order to be able to
attend, you must have a sig-
nificant amount of service
hours completed. The people
who have gained the highest
amount of hours up to No-
vember will be the ones in-
vited to join the executive
board on this fantastic trip.
So, if you’re thinking that
you may be on the borderline,
then do your very best to
squeeze in as many service
hours as possible. We still
have more events coming up,
including the Haunted House
on Saturday, October 20th at
3:00pm and the Pumpkin
Party at Oakside this Sunday,
the 21st of October at 12:00
pm.
Good luck to all!

New Jersey District Convention
How about a weekend in a
hotel with over 500 Key Club-
bers? Then New Jersey District
Convention is perfect for you.
Celebrating the Roarin’ 20s we
dance our way into service.
Learning about the accom-
plishments clubs did through-
out the year and watch a vari-
ety of talents Key Clubbers
perform. Every year, Key
Clubbers respond in such a
positive way at the end of the
convention that they cannot
wait until the beginning of the
service year.
It sure won’t be a disappoint-
ment. We will get to see, Eliza-
beth Wallace, be inducted to
be our 2013-2014 Lieutenant
Governor of Division 17!
We will also go to work-
shops where we will learn what
Key Club is truly about and
how we can bring some ideas
to our own club. Just talking
about this is getting me excited
to go! See you all at Long
Branch, New Jersey for the
convention!
