Camp is more than just funThere is an educational value to Camp as well. Charles W. Eliot, former president of Harvard University says, “The or-ganized summer camp is the most important step in education thatAmerica has given the world.” Columbia University Professor W.H. Kil-patrick characterizes as how “we learn what we live, only what we loveand everything we live” and suggested that “camp can thus spread amore adequate ideal of education.”What these educators are suggesting is that camp is chock full of ex-periential learning and rich tradition that no other educational expe-rience can provide. The JCC Lillian Schwartz Day Camp will provide this experience toyour child by:• Tapping into their creativity and imagination through exploration ofthe arts, music and culture • Building their strength, skills and dexterity through exceptionalsports programs• Helping them to develop interpersonal and social skills, teamworkand compassion for others It’s not too late to sign your child up! Contact Camp Directors Glenn or Stephanie for more information.

31st Annual Golf and Tennis Classic (see back cover)

This year will mark the 31st year the JCC will hold its major fundraiser, the Annual Golf & Tennis Classic whichbenefits the Isador Aberlin-Ed Rovner Memorial Scholarship Fund. Over the history of this event, morethan $1,200,000 has been raised and distributed to needy children in the form of camp and nursery schoolscholarships. To help us meet our goal, we gratefully acknowledge the generosity of IDB as this year’s Pre-senting Sponsor.Izzy Aberlin, JCC president from 1950-1952, was deeply committed to fulfilling the camp and preschool needs

of deserving children. Ed Rovner, a lifelong friend and fellow JCC Board member with Izzy, was always a majorsupporter of the outing and so his name was added to the event’s title upon his passing.Just as Isador Aberlin and Ed Rovner felt strongly about their commitment to the Jewish Community Center

and the children of Staten Island, so do the honorees who have been chosen this year to receive special recog-nition at the dinner which will cap off a wonderful day of golf and tennis at the Richmond County CountryClub on Monday, July 25, 2011.Alan Poritz will receive the “JCC Distinguished Service Award”. Alan is president of CleanSwift Maintenance,

Inc., a residential and commercial cleaning business. He is a vice president of the JCC Board of Directors andhas been a co-chair of the Golf & Tennis Classic for 10 years. Alan serves on the JCC Capital Campaign Com-mittee, Fundraising and Finance Committees. He is an active member of the SI Chamber of Commerce andthe SI Home Improvement Contractors Association. He is also a board member of the SI Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Visiting NurseAssociation of SI, Hillel of College of SI and a member of the South Shore Rotary for 33 years.Community Resources will receive the “JCC Community Service Award”. They are one of the metropolitan area’s premiere comprehensive

providers for people with developmental disabilities. Under the umbrella of Community Resources, Special Tees was established in 1995 as anon-profit small business specializing in the production of a full line of custom screen printed merchandise. Their mission is to provide trainingand employment to traditionally “unemployable” individuals in a controlled, secure environment that understands the difficulties of daily func-tioning for those with mental illness or developmental disability. The SI Chamber of Commerce will receive the “JCC Pride of Staten Island Award.” They have been serving the borough since 1895. The

Chamber acts as the borough’s business resource center providing business referrals daily, networking opportunities, legislative involvement, community and media access and a “Help Desk” hotline.Their committees work hard addressing issues that affect the most current needs of the community, and they offer a wide variety of special

events for their membership all while guaranteeing that the best interests of the community at large are served. Please join us to show your support for these most worthy recipients. Whether you come to play golf, tennis, attend the dinner or become a teesponsor, remember you are helping a child enjoy an enriching experience in our nursery school or camp who otherwise would not be able to at-tend. To participate, or for any questions, please call Sylvia Cohen, Special Events Coordinator at 718-475-5246 or email [email protected]

We all know that autism touchesmore than just the individual. Manytimes other family members areaffected as well. Each family memberfeels the struggle and sometimes thatstruggle develops into a passion tohelp others. Recently, two younggirls from St. Joseph Hill Academyran a bake and earring sale. TessHall and Julia DeFazio spent theirfree time making over 200 pair ofearrings and baking cookies and cup-cakes. They even solicited localbakeries for donations. Their effortsraised $1500 which they decided to

donate to our program for the chil-dren with autism. For one of the girls, this community

service fundraiser was personal, asher brother attends the Kids Club forSpecial Kids, an after school programfor children with autism. She is proudof her brother and his accomplish-ments and wants to see these pro-grams continue for other children. For their hard work and efforts, weacknowledge their support and pas-sion.

eat your lignans! If you don't know about Chia seeds, get to know themfast. They are like flax on steroids (high in anti-oxidants, fiber, calcium). They are a whole food, and they make you very strong.WalnutsTwo ounces—just half a handful—of walnuts per day reduces your risk.FruitA few apples a day may keep breast cancer at bay—eat them with skins.Pomegranates may reduce breast cancer risk by up to 87 percent, ac-cording to another recent study. Broccoli and CabbageBroccoli actually kills cancer cells, according to some studies. I usedtwo cookbooks that were life savers: Rebecca Katz's The Cancer Fight-ing Kitchen and One Bite at a Time. The second one is for chemo pa-tients. It has amazing tips and basically shows you what cancer-fightingquality every fruit and vegetable out there has. So you start realizingyou need to eat a lot of kale and you find yourself buying a lot of cab-bage because "Cancer hates cabbage." I sometimes had coleslaw forbreakfast—it got that crazy. But I had it easy. My friends banded to-gether to have a personal chef, Christine Merkle, deliver healthy veganfood twice a week. I was extraordinarily lucky.

June is Cancer Survivors MonthFight Cancer with Food by Jennifer Griffin For the thousands of individuals who face the devastating realities andday-to-day battle with breast cancer, FOX News Channel correspondentJennifer Griffin offers her warrior mentality: When she was diagnosedwith triple negative breast cancer, she chose to fight. Jennifer is deter-mined to become insufferably healthy and has changed her lifestyle. She offers the nutritional advice she follows from Dr. Aaron Tabor, au-thor of Fight Now: Eat and Live Proactively Against Breast Cancer. There are 500 new breast cancer cases diagnosed every day in Amer-ica. More than 40,000 women will die of breast cancer this year. I woulddescribe this as an epidemic—1 in 3 women will be diagnosed in our life-time! These are among the nutritional and lifestyle changes I follow andrecommend in the fight against cancer.VegetablesEat raw carrots. Harvard researchers have found young women whoeat two or more servings of carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables (or-anges, broccoli, carrots, romaine lettuce and spinach) had a 17 percentlower risk of breast cancer. Green TeaGreen tea consumption may reduce your breast cancer risk by up to53 percent. Drink 2 to 4 cups a day—make a pot and drink it cold in thesummer, too. A University of Southern California research team foundgreen tea lowered breast cancer risk by up to 53 percent.FiberHigh-fiber foods lower your risk by 42 percent.FishOmega-3 oils from salmon (wild-caught only, please) reduce your riskby up to 94 percent. I tried to eat salmon once a week. And during thechemo when I was really anemic (low red-blood-cell count), I did eatsome meat—grass-fed only—beef, liver and veal. My body was cravingthe iron, so listen to your body. I even drank "beef tea" when I felt reallyanemic (top sirloin steak extract).FlaxseedFlaxseed may reduce risk by 54 percent, according to recent studies—

Just like the flowers and plants outside, our children are blooming. Inschool, we are preparing our preschoolers for their transition to an-other class, or in some cases, another school, in September. For some, this change in environment will be easy. For others, being in a newclassroom will take some adjustment. Some helpful hints on how tomake this change as smooth as possible include: • Reading books about making changes.• If possible, take your child to see their new school/classroom aheadof time. Let them explore the room and meet their new teachers.• Start a count-down at home for the first day of school that your childcan actively participate in. This will get them excited as the day getscloser.• Every time you drive by your child’s school, tell them, “Look, that’syour school!” If you are excited, your child will be also.Speaking of September, registration is on-going for all of our Day-

care/Preschool programs, including Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK).

Have a fun and safe summer!Jayne & Jill
