2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California — June 26, 2011

From The Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good!

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Body and

Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi, focuses on the

great gift of Jesus to us in the Eucharist. As St. Francis of

Assisi himself wrote:"Let everyone be struck with fear,

let the whole world tremble,

and let the heavens exult

when Christ, the Son of the living God,

is present on the altar in the hands of a priest!

O wonderful loftiness and stupendous dignity!

O sublime humility!

O humble sublimity!

The Lord of the universe,

God and the Son of God,

so humbles himself

that for our salvation he hides himself

under an ordinary piece of bread!

See the humility of God, brothers

And pour our your hearts before him!

Humble yourselves that you may be exalted by him!

Hold back nothing of yourselves for yourselves

that he who gives himself totally to may receive you to-

tally!" ( Letter to the Entire Order )

Here at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, we are privileged to

celebrate this wonderful feast in a very special and

poignant way—inspired and guided by our Guamanian

community. Following the celebration of the 10 AM

Sunday Mass, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament

through the parish grounds, stopping to bless each of the

several traditional lanchos, or devotional altars, highlighting

our reverence and respect for the Sacramental Presence of

Christ among us. Finally, we will continue to the sanctuary

of the Old Mission Church for prayers and Benediction.

We cherish the gift of the Eucharist, which the Second

Vatican Council has called "the source and summit of the

Christian life….” (Lumen Gentium, 11) But this great gift of

Jesus of Himself to us carries with it a great responsibility on

our part. As we reverence the True Presence of Jesus in our

midst, we are also called upon to be Christ’s “true

presence” in our world. We have the obligation to be truly

‘present’ to ourselves and to our brothers and sisters

through works of charity, commitment to reconciliation,

and a relentless search for justice. This isn’t just our work;

it is Christ’s gift—Christ’s Present and Presence—to us and

through us, to others.

Elsewhere in the Parish:Welcome to the Lithuanian Catholic Community!

Sveiki atvyke! Welcome! A special welcome to our

brothers and sisters of the Lithuanian Catholic community,

who will be meeting for Mass at 2 PM on the fourth Sunday

of each month in our Parish Chapel, starting this weekend.

A special welcome to Father Zilvinas Jakstas, who will be

presiding at the liturgies and ministering to the

community. We are delighted to welcome our brothers

and sisters to Mission San Luis Rey Parish and will do

whatever we can to make them feel welcome and at home.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Christmas in July, the

weekend of July 9-10. This wonderful celebration of

quality arts and crafts, delicious foods (mmmm!), great

music, and lots of fun for the entire family will benefit our

parish school, Old Mission Montessori. This year, for the

second year in a row, we will be featuring a Carnival as

well. As a special offer to our parishioners, advance tickets

for Carnival rides will be available at an incredible discount

of 75% !!! You can purchase tickets outside the Serra

Center after weekend Mass, or by calling the School/ Parish

Office. The last date to purchase tickets will be July 8 at

noon. Don’t delay!

In the home stretch with our 3 x 15 Campaign. So far,

we’ve raised more than $180,000 toward the construction

of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Sports Court/ Parking Lot.This month, we will conclude our 3 x 15 Campaign, in which

parish families are pledging $15 per month for three

months (or $45 in total) toward the Sports Court. So far,

more than 1,000 families have ‘taken the Pledge’. Please

consider doing so now if you haven’t yet made a

commitment! Thank you for your customary generosity.

God bless,

Fr. Chuck

Wonderful Lazy Summer Days

Isn’t summer a wonderful time of year

especially if you live here in Southern

California? The weather is usually not too hot

or too cool and if you think the humidity is a problem checkwith some of us who recently moved here. Believe us when

we say that it really could be a lot worse. Summer is a time

to take long trips or short trips with the family, to enjoy

cooking on the grill so as to give Mom a break in the kitchen,

or to spend a little time with the kids at the beach. Overall it

is just a more relaxed time of year without the structure of

school, after hour’s meetings, religious education and so on.

To top it off our days are longer. Some of us even take a

more relaxed attitude toward coming to mass and if we

travel sometimes we go as a visitor on the road.

It is also the time of year that we see a pretty severe

drop in our Sunday plate collection. We know that many of

you will try to “catch up”, and for that we are grateful. We

can only ask that each of us remember our parish needs,

consider dropping in an early envelope when you know that

you will be out of town or better yet consider our old friend

“electronic fund transfer”. It is easy to set up and it never

takes a vacation on us. Just give us a call in the office and

we will send the forms right out. Have a wonderful summer!

MEDIA/BOOK OF THE WEEK:

When A Baby Diesby Nancy Kohner & Alix Henley

This compassionate book offers insight and information

for all parents whose babies have died, their families &

friends, and the professionals who care for them.

Every year thousands of babies die before birth or

shortly afterwards. For the parents, such grief feels un-

bearable. In this book, parents who have lost a baby tell

their stories. They speak about what happened, how they

felt, how they have been helped by others, and how they

have helped themselves.

Using letters from and interviews with many bereaved

parents, the authors have written a book which offers

understanding of what it means to lose a baby and the

grief that follows. When a Baby Dies also contains valu-

able information about why a baby dies, hospital prac-tices, the process of grieving, sources of support, and the

care parents need in future pregnancies.

Nothing can take away the pain of losing a baby, but it

can help parents to know that there are others who, in

different ways, have been through—and survived—the

experience. If you know of someone who has recently

been faced with this tragedy, tell them about this book.

Or read it yourself to find out how to help.

8 | PARROQUIA MISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California — 26 de junio del 2011

Querida Familia Parroquial,

¡Oh, admirable alturas y sublime humildad!

¡Oh Sublime humildad!

¡Oh Sublime alteza!

(lanchos) devocionales tradicionales, destacando nuestra

verdaderamente a nosotros mismos y a nuestros hermanos

¡No esperen!
