Every Bishop has to choose a coat of arms and a motto. At the back of SaintCharles church, above the table where we place the gifts of bread and wine forthe offertory procession, you will see the coats of arms of the last four Bishops:Borders, Grady, Dorsey and Wenski. Completing the line is the portrait of ourcurrent leader, Bishop John Noonan, fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Orlando inits 43 year history. You will see Bishop Noonans coat of arms below, althoughwe will only place it in the church when he moves, retires or dies - and we hopethat none of those things will happen for a very long time.

Below the shield of the coat of arms is themotto. A bishops personal motto hasalways been intended to represent hispersonal spirituality and is most frequentlygrounded in Sacred Scripture or in aprominent prayer. Most mottos ofAmerican Bishops are in English or in Latin, the universal language of the Catholic

Church, but Bishop Noonans motto is inGaelic, the historic Irish language which isstill spoken in some areas of the south andwest of Ireland. The words are an adaptionof part of the great hymn to the Trinitywritten by St. Patrick, traditionally calledthe Breastplate of Saint Patrick. In theEnglish translation it is rendered as GODBEFORE ME AND GOD WITH ME, andon this Trinity Sunday we should pray that God will always go before BishopNoonan to be his protector and be with him as his strength and guide.

Although the hymn is addressed to the Trinity, the section which the Bishop

chose to adapt is in fact an extended prayer to Jesus Christ, a beautiful prayerwhich we can all use:

Christ be with me, Christ beneath me,Christ within me, Christ above me,Christ behind me, Christ in quiet,Christ before me, Christ in danger,Christ beside me, Christ in hearts ofChrist to win me, all that love me,Christ to comfort Christ in mouth of

and restore me. friend and stranger

ANNUAL VACATION: I always try to go back to Britain to visit my family in
