XIII Sunday in Ordinary Time Theme: Fear. What is fear? From my understanding, fear is an emotional response induced by a perceived threat,
which causes a change in brain and organ function, as well as in behavior. Fear keeps us from liv-
ing life to the full. Fear paralyzes us and prevents us from taking prudent risks so as to grow. Fear
makes us timid and untrusting. We close in on ourselves. We form closed groups and societies. It
becomes of utmost important to know who one of us is and who is a stranger.
Our readings today confront some of our most basic fears: fear of death, fear of poverty, fear of
harm. All animals die. Man is the only animal who knows he is going to die. Instead of living in
fear, we must make sense of our temporality and finitude. There will come a time when we will
cease to be. The world will continue; we will not. To find meaning in our life in the face of death
we must ask: Why are we born to die? Why does God bring us into existence if only to let us per-
ish? As soon as we are old enough to breath, we are old enough to die!
Our first reading from Wisdom offers us some sobering thoughts. Our gospel offers the example of
Jesus. Wisdom teaches that God did not create death. God made the human person imperishable, in
the divine image. The good creation of God was originally free of death and destruction. However,
the devil was jealous and sought to destroy all that God had made. Out of envy, he brought death
into the world. The human person turned away from God. The tragic result was the fall. We live in
fear and insecurity. Sin alienates us from God, self, others and creation. Is there any hope of recon-
ciliation and new life?
Our gospel reading contains the words of Jesus: “Fear is useless. What is needed is trust. “Death
comes through the devil and sin. However, God will not allow these to have the final word. Fear
will be replaced by courage: death with the hope of eternal life. Jesus comes as God’s reconciling,
life-giving word. Yes, death is real. The pain of death is great. However, in the final analysis it is
light, life, hope and grace which will win out. In the short run the forces of death and darkness are
operative. We are afraid. Yet, fear is not the proper response for the Christian. We must trust in the
power of Jesus who said to the little girl, “get up.”

Desde El Escritorio Del Pastor XIII Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario Tema: Miedo.
¿Qué es el miedo? Desde mi punto de vista, el miedo es una respuesta emocional inducida por una
amenaza percibida, que provoca un cambio en el funcionamiento del cerebro y de los órganos, así
como en el comportamiento. El miedo nos impide vivir la vida al máximo. El miedo nos paraliza y
nos impide tomar riesgos prudentes para crecer. El miedo nos hace tímidos y desconfiados. Nos
acercamos a nosotros mismos. Formamos grupos cerrados y sociedades. Es de suma importancia
saber quién es uno de nosotros y quién es un extraño.
Nuestras lecturas de hoy confrontan algunos de nuestros miedos más básicos: miedo a la muerte,
miedo a la pobreza, miedo al daño. Todos los animales mueren El hombre es el único animal que
sabe que va a morir. En lugar de vivir con miedo, debemos darle sentido a nuestra temporalidad y
finitud. Llegará un momento en que dejaremos de serlo. El mundo continuará; nosotros no. Para
encontrar sentido en nuestra vida frente a la muerte, debemos preguntarnos: ¿Por qué nacemos para
morir? ¿Por qué Dios nos trae a la existencia solo para dejarnos perecer? ¡Tan pronto como tenga-
mos la edad suficiente para respirar, tendremos la edad suficiente para morir!
Nuestra primera lectura de Sabidora nos ofrece algunos pensamientos aleccionadores. Nuestro
evangelio ofrece el ejemplo de Jesús. La sabiduría enseña que Dios no creó la muerte. Dios hizo a
la persona humana imperecedera, en la imagen divina. La buena creación de Dios originalmente
estaba libre de muerte y destrucción. Sin embargo, el diablo estaba celoso e intentó destruir todo lo
que Dios había hecho. Por envidia, trajo la muerte al mundo. La persona humana se alejó de Dios.
El trágico resultado fue la caída. Vivimos con miedo e inseguridad. El pecado nos aleja de Dios, el
yo, los demás y la creación. ¿Hay alguna esperanza de reconciliación y nueva vida?
Nuestra lectura del evangelio contiene las palabras de Jesús: "El temor es inútil. Lo que se necesita
es confianza. "La muerte viene a través del diablo y el pecado. Sin embargo, Dios no permitirá que
estos tengan la última palabra. El miedo será reemplazado por el coraje: la muerte con la esperanza
de la vida eterna. Jesús viene como la palabra de Dios que reconcilia y da vida. Sí, la muerte es real.
El dolor de la muerte es genial. Sin embargo, en el análisis final es la luz, la vida, la esperanza y la
gracia lo que saldrá ganando. En el corto plazo, las fuerzas de la muerte y la oscuridad son operati-
vas. Tenemos miedo. Sin embargo, el miedo no es la respuesta adecuada para el cristiano. Debemos
confiar en el poder de Jesús que le dijo a la niña, "levántate".

suficiente para vivir bien. Nos preocupamos por nuestro pan de
cada día. Pero, ¿es realmente nuestro pan de cada día lo que nos
preocupa? ¿No es a menudo nuestro pan futuro? ¿Tendremos
suficiente para mañana? pero cuanto es suficiente? Con dema-
siada frecuencia, la respuesta es: "Nunca es suficiente". Porque
siempre podemos usar más dinero, telas y posesiones materiales.
Nuestro miedo e inseguridad nos hacen correr y agarrar más y
más de lo que necesitamos para nuestro pan de cada día. Co-
menzamos a vivir de acuerdo con nuestra codicia y obsesión.
Construimos un excedente que niega a los demás lo que necesi-
tan. ¿Deberíamos planear para mañana? Prudence aconseja que
sí. Sin embargo, hay una "medida correcta" en términos de lo
que almacenamos. San Pablo escribe a los corintios: "Su abun-
dancia en el tiempo presente debe suplir sus necesidades para
que su excedente a su vez pueda suplir su necesidad algún día,
con la igualdad como resultado." El temor por el mañana impide
tal compartir y cuidar.
La confianza debe estar presente cuando pensamos en el pan del
día de mañana. Si realmente confiamos en la providencia de
Dios, todo temor es expulsado. El Dios que nos cuidó hoy lo
hará mañana. El pan de cada día será el pan de cada día para
mañana, hasta que lleguemos al salón de banquetes preparado
por Jesús. Entonces la muerte no será más. Lo veremos tal como
es. Y el amor de Dios alejará todo temor de nuestros corazones.
Entonces sabremos una paz más allá de todo entendimiento. Y
será nuestro para siempre
Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas: "No tengan miedo; solo ten
fe. "La semana pasada te escribí sobre la necesidad de tener con-
fianza y coraje en Jesús. Esta confianza y coraje expulsan todo
miedo. Este domingo se nos anima a ver la necesidad de confiar
y tener fe en Dios. No debemos huir del pensamiento de la
muerte, el pensamiento de nuestra propia muerte ... sino que
debemos simplemente ponernos al cuidado del Señor. Confíe en
Él sin miedo, sin duda, sin preocupaciones. La muerte es un fin
necesario.
En algún momento de esta semana que viene, siéntate en silen-
cio y piensa en la muerte, en tu propia muerte ... pero piensa
especialmente en tu juez, tu Padre ... de infinita misericordia ... y
desecha todo tu miedo. Día tras día, intenta vivir tu vida cristia-
na como Dios quiere de ti, amándola a Él y al prójimo.

In addition to the fear of death, we are afraid that we will not
have enough in order to live well. We worry about our daily
bread. But is it really our daily bread that concerns us? Is it
not often our future bread? Will we have enough for tomor-
row? But how much is enough? Too often, the answer is:
“There is never enough.” For we can always use more money,
cloths and material possessions. Our fear and insecurity cause
us to run after and grasp more and more than we need for our
daily bread. We begin to live by our greed and obsession. We
build up a surplus which denies others what they need. Should
we plan for tomorrow? Prudence counsels yes. However,
there is a “right measure” in terms of what we store up. St.
Paul writes to the Corinthians: “Your plenty at the present
time should supply their needs so that their surplus may in
turn one day supply your need, with equality as the result.”
Fear about tomorrow prevents such sharing and caring.
Trust must be at work when we think about tomorrow’s daily
bread. If we really trust in God’s providence, all fear is driven
out. The God who cared for us today will do so tomorrow.
The daily bread of today will be the daily bread for tomorrow,
until we come into the banquet hall prepared by Jesus. Then
death will be no more. We shall see him as he is. And God’s
love will drive all fear from our hearts. Then we shall know a
peace beyond all understanding. And it will be ours forever.
My dear brothers and sisters, “Do not be afraid; only have
faith.” Last week I wrote to you about the need to have confi-
dence and courage in Jesus. This confidence and courage
drives out all fear. This Sunday we are encouraged to see the
need to trust and have faith in God. We should not run away
from the thought of death – the thought of our own death …
but we should simply place ourselves in the Lord’s care. Rely
on Him without fear, without doubt, without worry. Death is a
necessary end.
Sometime this week coming week, sit quietly and think of
death, of your own death… but think especially of your judge,
your Father … of infinite mercy… and throw away all your
fear. Day after day, try to live your Christian life as God
wants from you, loving Him and neighbor.

COLLECTION FOR THE SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE
CHURCH IN AFRICA THIS WEEKEND, JUNE 30 & JULY 1
This weekend, our parish will take up a collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. While many Africans are growing in their faith, they still face the challenges of high rates of poverty and un-employment, illiteracy, and poor education. The solidarity fund supports essential pastoral projects across the continent that nourish the people of this young and vibrant Church. Please give generously in this weekend’s collection.

El Fondo de Solidari-dad financia proyectos pastorales básicos en todo el continente que nutren a las personas de esta joven y entusiasta Iglesia.
