School Description and Demographics

Our Mission Statement: James A. Garfield High School is committed to providing the highest quality instructional program for all students through collaboration, accountability, and powerful teaching. Our Vision Statement: All students at Garfield High School will participate in an academic program that will prepare them to enter a four-year college or university. Upon graduation, all students will be proficient or above in the English Language Arts and Math standards as measured by the California Standards Test. Our Beliefs: ▪ We believe that all staff, students and community are life-long learners and that all graduates can be effective communicators, self-directed learners, community participants, effective technologists and collaborative workers. ▪ We believe in providing all individuals with equal opportunities to pursue excellence and to achieve their maximum potential, while continuing on their path to life-long learning. ▪ We are committed to providing all individuals with the tools to become competitive in a global economy and to become concerned, involved citizens in our democratic society, and to instill in our students respect for others and the environment. Overall School Demographic Information: Garfield High School, a comprehensive three-track grade 9-12 high school, provides services for 4,822 students with an ethnic population of 99% Hispanic or Latino, and less than 1% each of all other ethnicities. Of the total Garfield High School student population, 1.9% are AVID Program students. (92 students of 4,822 are in the AVID Program.) They are currently enrolled in four (4) sections of AVID. For comparison purposes, 8% of all students are Gifted Program students, 40% are English Learners (EL), 8% are migrant students, 22% are from families receiving CalWorks services, and 96% of all students receive free/reduced price meals. Garfield students are from lower to middle class income families where Spanish is often the primary language. Parents participate in school-related committees, but are not involved to a high degree in the education of their teenagers. Based on the most recent parent survey, the Average Parent Education Level is 1.62 based on the average of all responses where “1” represents “Not a high school graduate” and 5 represents “Graduate school.” The AVID Program’s Mission Statement: Garfield High School’s AVID Program is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. We are committed to ensuring that all students, especially the least served students who are currently doing C-average work and who would like to attend a four-year university, succeed in a rigorous curriculum, undertake mainstream activities at school, increase their enrollment in four-

year colleges, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society. The AVID Program’s Objectives: (1) To provide academic instruction and other support to students and to prepare them for eligibility to four-year colleges and universities; (2) To give students college-level entry skills; (3) To motivate students to seek a college education; (4) To increase our students’ levels of career awareness; (5) To prepare the students for a professional career; (6) To encourage the students to participate in extracurricular and community activities. In addition, we strive to maintain a well-developed AVID Program that will improve and increase school-wide standardized test scores, advanced-level course enrollments, and the number of students attending college. Finally, we hope to have 100% of our AVID graduates enroll in colleges and universities, and have them graduate with a baccalaureate degree. The AVID Program’s Student Selection Criteria: Students who have the potential and the desire to attend a four-year college and have: (1) Appropriate classroom behavior, (2) Between a 2.0 and 3.5 grade point average, (3) Have a good attendance record, (4) Have good work habits, (5) Are willing to commit themselves to a minimum of two hours of homework each night, and (6) Are willing to commit to enrollment in a rigorous college preparatory sequence of courses. We recruit 8th grade students who are in the academic middle. In other words, we recruit those students who are averaging Bs, Cs, and occasionally Ds. We also take into consideration standardized test scores, absences, tardies, teacher commentaries, interviews, student questionnaires, and our application forms to determine who will be admitted to the program. As is the case with most of our student population, the students we select may be the first in their families to attend college, and most are from low-income or minority families. Our AVID Site Team: Our team, which is lead by the principal, the assistant principal, and the AVID Program Site Coordinator, is made up of fifteen members. Of the fifteen members, three are currently teaching four sections of AVID. We also have three counselors working on three tracks. The other six members of our team are future AVID section teachers and current support team members. Our team members are:

1) Lupe Paramo, Principal 2) Laura Alvarado, Assistant Principal 3) Alfonso M. Gil, AVID Program Site Coordinator 4) Cindy Cumbess, Track A AVID Counselor 5) John Miller, Track A (AVID 9) 6) Jennifer Fuentes, Track A 7) Michael Rocha, Track A 8) Rosanna Carosa, Track B AVID Counselor 9) Anne Braeff, Track B (AVID 9)

Because interest in our AVID Program is increasing dramatically here at Garfield and because we will increase the number of AVID classes we offer, our team will grow in the coming months. The AVID Program Matrix: Our AVID Program is on all tracks (A, B, and C). We currently offer four sections of AVID:
