Kinder Team: We have an exciting month in Kindergarten in April! We are con-tinuing to work on addition and subtraction problem solving in math. Your child is learning several different strategies to solve these word problems. Ask your child about the different tools they can use! We will continue practicing our tricky teens and are still

working toward our end of year goal to count to 100 by 1’s.

We have wrapped up our word families and will be working on compound words, silent e, and two vowels walking (raiaiaiain) this month. We will also be getting a head start on some first grade phonics skills to prepare students for next year! Students’ writing

is really blossoming in writer’s workshop!

Our science unit this 9 weeks is called Buzzing with Bugs. Your child will learn all about ladybugs and bees. Students will learn about things like the parts of the insects as well as their life cy-

cles. Students really enjoy this science unit!

Mark your calendars for some exciting events happing in Kinder-garten this month! Our Egg Hunt will be the morning of April 2nd and our field trip to Sweet Berry Farm will be on April 10th! Look for more information about these two events coming soon from

your child’s teacher!

First Grade:

Language Arts: Students will be working on alphabetizing words to the second letter, describing the problem and solution in a

story, and working to stretch their writing to 6-8 sentences.

Science: Students will classify living and non-living things through collecting data and investigation and analyze examples of interde-

pendence.

Second Grade:

Spring is in the air. We are enjoying the warmer weather in

2nd grade. Here is what will be working on this month.

ReadingReadingReadingReading: We will be working in identifying the main idea in an expository text. We are also working on following multi-step directions and using context clues to identify mean-

ings of unknown words.

Writing: Writing: Writing: Writing: The students are continuing to work on expository writing. The students will be writing a procedural text. An example of a procedural text is ‘How to Make a Sandwich.’ We are also going to be talking about how to make our

writing more interesting.

Math: Math: Math: Math: We will be working on solving, creating, and describ-ing division story problems along with solving multi-step addition and subtraction story problems. We will also be working on telling time to the minute. Please practice tell-

Third Grade: Hello Parents! Can you believe we’re getting ready to begin our last 9 weeks of the school year?! Here are some of the skills we’ll be working on.

In Social Studies we’ll be learning about how our government officials are chosen, services commonly provided by the different levels of gov-

ernment, and how government services are paid for. Some questions to ask your child during this unit are:

1. What is government? 2. How are government officials chosen?

In Science we’ll be learning about the different types of plants and animals that exist in various regions of the world, along with their inher-

ited traits and learned behaviors that allow them to thrive in those environments. Some questions to ask your child during this unit are:

1. Why are inherited traits and learned behaviors important? 2. How do plants and animals change in their life cycle?

During Reading we’ll be begin by diving into persuasive texts to make inferences and draw conclusions about the author’s point of view and to identify what they’re trying to persuade the reader to think or do. We’ll make connections to this as w

write our own persuasive texts during our Writer’s Workshop. Some questions to ask during this unit are:

1. In what ways does writing influence the thoughts and opinions of others? 2. What strategies do authors use to persuade an audience?

Finally, in Math we’ll be revisiting multiplication by extending to 2 digit by 1 digit problems, as well as add on to our previous learning of frac-

tions to understand them as part of a set, not just a whole. Here are a couple of questions to ask your child during this unit:

1. How can we use place value to help us with computation? 2. Why do we need to know about fractions?

Fourth Grade: People love to wonder, and that is the seed of science.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson Spring already!!! Time sure flies when you are busy learning new things. As you have probably guessed by now, fourth grade is full of new learning. Months go by and before we know it, we are ready to “show what we know”! Don’t let the testing get you down or your child. It is only part of what school is about. If your child is learning and growing academically, socially, physi-cally and emotionally, then you are both on the right track. En-courage them to do their best! All year we have been stressing the need to READ! That fact never changes as we grow. No matter what the homework is for the week, make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes a night. Studies have shown that stamina for reading helps your child significantly, not only in the present, but in the future. Math facts are a must! Keep practicing as this skill helps in so many other areas of math. Fun events are on the horizon!!! Field Day for fourth grade will be on May 7th. We will travel to Rouse High School for the morn-ing (9-12) and participate in track and field events. It is always a fun day so plan on attending! We also have show-off night in May. You definitely will not want to miss this amazing performance! Letters will go home with your child’s designated date and time for their evening show. Performances are on May 19th, 20th and 21st in the evening.

9

Fifth Grade: In 5th grade we enjoyed our visit to Wiley Middle School where we saw per-formances by the band, choir, theatre arts and dance. We also got to walk through the 6th grade hallways and best of all eat in the middle school cafe-

teria!

5th graders have also picked their choices for their elective in middle school and look forward to attending Coyote Camp this summer at Wiley. Our next field trip will be to Southwestern University on April 17th. This is an amazing field trip in which the students get to eat lunch on the campus lawn and then attend several science rotations in the college labs that will be a great

review for our upcoming STAAR science test.

Math: In math the last nine weeks is review skills from the previous first 3 nine weeks. We are reviewing the skills to prepare for the math STAAR test which is on April 21st. Your child should be using the computer program

Think Through Math at home to review these skills each week.

Language Arts: In language arts we are ambitiously perusing our goal of reading 40 books this school year, keep on reading! We are also using our research skills and applying them on our current autobiographies and re-

search papers on countries around the world.

Science: We are working on the Organisms and Environments in which students will use their background knowledge of environmental systems to investigate the relationships and cycles within an ecosystem. We will be observing isopods and mealworms in the classroom daily as well as con-ducting labs that involve the isopods. The upcoming STAAR science test is on April 22nd, students should be preparing for the testing by logging on to

Study Island each week.

Social Studies: In social studies we will be summarizing the results of the American Revolution, including the establishment of the United States Con-

stitution and the Bill of Rights.
