The Boosterthon Fun Run and Fundraiser may be over, but it has had quite an impact on the students of West Wing. The Boosterthon Team was on our campus for two weeks facilitating daily Team Huddles, encouraging students on morning announcements, joining in with the PE classes and recesses. The main goals of the Boosterthon Fun Run was to raise funds while teaching our kids about the importance of Fitness, Leadership, and Character. This was the first fundraiser where we had nearly 100% participation! Every student who was at school on Oct. 11th participated in the fun run by running laps around a 1/16th of a mile track. Thank you to Team Nebel, Team Byrd, and Team Swingle for being the first three classes to turn in 100% of their pledges. They were each rewarded with Camp High Five S'Mores! As of Oct. 31st 93% of pledges have been turned in. If you have not turned in your money yet, please do so, we really want to achieve 100%! One of the first items the PTSA will purchase with the money raised are Document Cameras.

These cameras allow teachers to produce any image onto a wall, white board or Smart Board, allowing the whole class the ability to see the im-age. Some key features are high resolution im-age quality, digital zoom, plug and play simplicity, auto tune, and joint free gooseneck allowing 360° viewing angle on any object. Another item will be multifunctional teachers carts which will allow the teachers to have all essential teaching tools in

one spot. Desktop privacy boards will be another purchase. Teachers and students will be able to use these during test times, quiet study times, quiet reading times or any time the students may want privacy for any work they are doing. Boosterthon was such a success we are able to purchase additional items for the Library, Music and PE! Your PTSA along with the Principal and West Wing staff have put much thought and consideration into these purchases and welcome any feedback or other suggestions as to what would be a good purchase to help aid in the

DVUSD Business Partner Making a Difference through Music

Through Deer Valley's partnership with the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) students will be

able to experience the history of musical instruments. MIM's generous donation of admission passes

totaling $10,000 provides Deer Valley students with the opportunity for arts exposure and an unfor-

gettable experience. MIM was recognized at the October 8th Board Meeting. Accepting the award was

MIM Education Manager Carly Ofsthun.

Tip—The more consistently you follow through, the quicker your child will learn.

I was musing the other day about how we can know in our heads good parenting

practices and resolve to use them, but when the situation gets emotional, all our

good intentions fly out the window. We talk a lot about choices, consequences and

follow-through at Parenting Press—mostly because they really work—but if you

haven’t observed them in action, they can seem like techniques that only work for,

say, T. Berry Brazelton. I had an e-mail this week from a friend who is parenting a

three-year-old daughter with an anecdote that illustrates the success of calm fol-

low-through. I thought I’d share it with you.

Friday night Abby had a meltdown over dinner, pushing her food away and kicking

the table. I told her she could either sit nicely and eat at the table with us and

her uncle Tad, or go to bed. She kept acting up, so I put her to bed. She could not

believe it. I brushed her teeth, put jammies on her and put her to bed without a

story. She protested all the while that she wanted to be nice and eat at the table

and she was sooo hungry. I was so proud of myself: I stayed calm, and told her she

could try again tomorrow, but she’d had her chance to eat nicely with us and she

chose instead to push her food away and kick the table, so she had to go to bed. “I

can listen tomorrow?” she asked. “Yes,” I said. “And be nice to Uncle Tad?” “Yes,

he’ll still be here in the morning” I answered. She accepted it and just crashed. As

I suspected, the meltdown was really because she was extremely tired. She slept

very well that night and she’s really listened the last few days instead of pushing

every limit. Wonder how long the afterglow will last!

This is a great example because it shows that one warning and a calm follow-

through with a reasonable consequence can really make a lasting difference in a

child’s behavior.

Tool—Parent educator, Elizabeth Crary, author of Magic Tools for Raising Kids,

discusses the importance of follow-through. “If you tell your child to get off the

table, you must take him off immediately if he does not get down. If you let him

stay on the table, you are teaching him to ignore you.”

For follow-through to be effective, however, you must have a ready consequence

in mind. My friend, in the above example, used a reasonable one: behave nicely at

the table or skip dinner and go to bed early. Another example might be, pick up

your toys or you lose the privilege of playing with them for one day. One benefit

to using simple, logical consequences is that it clearly communicates choice. Your

child decides if she behaves or experiences the consequence.

Pack a...Joke - Tickle your child’s funny bone by sending along a kid-friendly

joke -- the cornier, the better! Check out our huge collection of mom-approved

jokes here. And whether you type it up on your computer and print or simply

scribble it by hand on a napkin or folded paper towel, bring the joke to life with a

silly hand-drawn illustration. Get started with this fun joke: Question: Why did

the chicken cross the playground? Answer: To get to the other slide.

Pack a...Riddle - Even though it will engage the brain, working out the answer

to an enigmatic riddle won’t seem like extra homework. Fold up your note so that

it’s hard to accidentally spot the answer right away. Get started with these rid-

dles: Question: What five-letter word becomes shorter when you add two letters

to it? Answer: Short

Question; What question can a person ask all day long, getting a different answer

each time, yet all the answers are correct? Answer: What time is it?

Pack a...Puzzle - For more midday mind-stretchers, pack a small puzzle, like

word finds, crosswords, sudoku, etc. For an easy way to include these in a

lunchbox, buy books at the dollar store and tear out the pages. Page-A-Day calen-

dar pages work great for this, too.

Pack a...Clue - Enclose a tiny clue or symbol indicating that day’s after-school

activity. For example, include a tiny toy soccer ball if it's the first day of soccer

practice, a little envelope containing the cut-out letters of the family member or

friend who is coming over for dinner that evening, or a piece of popcorn if you’re

going to the movies.

Pack a...Photograph - Slip a picture into your child’s lunchbox that will re-

mind him or her of the past weekend’s fun activities, or just enclose a goofy, can-

did shot taken during everyday family time around the house. Don’t worry if you

don’t have glossy color prints on hand; you can simply print images out from your

computer on regular printer paper – and black and white is just fine.

Pack a...Creative love note - While there’s nothing wrong with simply

sending the words “I love you,” you can also show a little creativity when sending a

sweet, mom-type missive. For example, glue a cotton ball to a note that says

"Being your mom puts me on Cloud 9."

Pack a...Coupon - Surprise your child with a hand-written coupon good for a

special treat. Pick something you know your child will love, whether it’s an after-

school visit to the ice cream stand, a trip to the library, playground, or pet shop,

or choosing a tiny (under five dollars) toy from the store.

Pack a...Compliment - Encourage your child with a thoughtful, creative com-

pliment. Whether it’s "You’re super at sharing," "You take great care of (insert

name of pet here)," or "You're a really kind brother," it’s a boost to get this kind

of good parental feedback—especially when it’s least expected, like at lunch.

Pack a...Trivia question - You don't have to leave older siblings out of the

note game. For kids who are playing it cool, simply slip in some fun facts or trivia

related to his or her interests, whether it’s outer space, a favorite book series, or

PE Coach, Mr. Smith applied for a $100 Grant from the PTSA, it was voted on and approved. This was his request: “I believe that the

most important thing I can teach children is that staying physically fit through walking and jogging can be fun and easy. One of my ac-tivities is called "Run Day - Fun Day" The students are given a run-

ning card that is hole-punched every time they complete an almost .25 mile lap. When they complete the card (five miles), they receive

a "Toe Token". These are small plastic tokens that will slip onto a shoe lace. It motivates them to run more laps each day as to get

more tokens. By the end of the year, they will proudly display their collection of tokens on their sneakers.”
