Norway has a large and advanced industry based on our petroleum and hydropower resources. Norway has the world’s highest per capita hydropower production. Norway has high ambitions when it comes to further develop-ment of renewable energy. We still develop considerable amounts of hydro-power, but the Norwegian government also promotes various forms of new renewable energy production and energy technology.

Norwegian companies are active within renewable energy in Norway and internationally. A strong and technologically advanced metals and materials industry has been the starting point for a new and expanding solar energy industry in our country. Enterprises from Norway are increasingly active within wind power, not least within the o!shore wind sector. Our largest energy enterprises Statkra" and Statoil have, as an example, been granted a license for the development of the huge o!shore wind project Dogger Bank in the UK.

#e Norwegian Government wants to be a partner for the industry and supports research and innovation in new renewable energy. Government funding for renewable energy research has increased substantially during the last years.

Development of renewable energy is an opportunity for industrial develop-ment, as well as a strategy to meet the challenges of climate change and energy security.

Why renewable energy?Today fossil fuels constitute roughly 50 percent of con-sumed energy in Norway. Reaching the UN Two-Degree target implies removing all possible greenhouse gas emis-sion, and substituting all fossil energy with renewable.

Wind power is e$cient and demands relatively small areas compared with many of the alternatives. Phasing out fossil fuels is also energy e$ciency. If the renewable power is used in electric cars, in heat pumps or as a substitute for small o!-shore gas power plants, the amount of energy needed is reduced 2-3 times. Wind farms can also successfully be combined with other activities, such as forestry in forested areas. Experience shows that Norwegian wind farms are even used for recreation, as roads open new areas.

New technology and increased knowledgeWind power has contributed less than one percent of power production in Norway. Still a lot of lessons have been learnt. Statistics for annual production indicates better perfor-mance in new wind farms. #is seems to be caused by better tools for micrositing, better design of wind farms and better technology. Increased knowledge and experience point to even higher yields per installed MW in future parks.

Energy Norway looks forward to the next ten years, when wind power becomes a real part of the Norwegian power mix. Our task will be to assist our members in developing better technology, optimizing operation and management, and help reducing costs, just as we have assisted Norwegian hydro power producers. Simultaneously we will work for better framework for renewable power, and push for climate smart energy solutions.

A new start for wind power in NorwayDue to inadequate support schemes, few wind farms have been developed in Norway. By 2012 this will change, as Norway and Sweden plan to start a joint electricity certificate system. This system will deliver about 26 TWh new renewable power by 2020. According to the Swedish Energy Authority, more than 50 percent of new renewable power will come from wind, the rest from hydro and biomass.

#e Basecamp “di!erence” is o"en described as a special blend of unique destinations, operated with a strong focus on sustainability. Not only does Basecamp give you a more authentic and exciting experience, but you can be sure that your holiday also bene%ts local communities and the environment.

Mara Naboisho Conservancy#e Basecamp Explorer eco lodges in Kenya are placed in the centre of the amazing migration of large mammals, o"en referred to as the 7th Wonder of the World. Each year 1,5 million wildebeest, zebra and antilopes move in an enormous circuit between Masai Mara and the large Serengeti plains.

But the 7th wonder of the world is threate-ned, and this largest and most renowned migra-tion of mammals is in danger of vanishing right before our eyes.

#is again will create serious consequ-ences for thousands of jobs, important local

revenues will disappear and the tourist indus-try that brings most of the foreign currencies to Kenya will be severely hit. Many will call this an ecological and economical catastrophe not only for Kenya, but also for all future gene-rations on the planet.

Basecamp is therefore in 2011 creating a major contribution towards sustainable tourism by establishing Mara Naboisho Con-servancy in Kenya. #is is done in cooperation with 500 Maasai landowners. 'Highest density of lions in the world#e 26'000 hectar Mara Naboisho Conser-vancy, located back-to-back to the world famous Masai Mara National Reserve is an important step towards sustainable commu-nity development and wildlife tourism in East Africa. #e land includes a 20'000 hectar core area for wildlife conservation with surround-ing bu!er zones for cattle grazing and Maasai community service centers. #e estimated

density of lions in the conservancy is proba-bly the highest in the world, even higher than the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. We are talking about saving the most unique game area of all and the most spectacular wildlife safari opportunities that exist today.

Basecamp Explorer and NORFUNDBasecamp Foundation Kenya – the not-for-pro%t counterpart to Basecamp Explorer Kenya, has spent the last 12 years funding and leading the process that have resulted in the longest private lease agreement for wildlife conservancies in Masai Mara.

– Basecamp Foundation will partner with Mara Naboisho Conservancy to provide support for a development strategy for the surrounding Maasai people that will change the face of com-munity involvement in Kenya's tourism, says Dr. Lars Lindkvist of Basecamp Foundation, and continues, – Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Cornelius – a unique seafood adventure

#e restaurant started its journey towards fame and fantastic &avours in 2004, through careful nurturing by Alf Roald Sætre and Odd Einar Tu"eland. Odd Einar is a seasoned chef with seafood as his speciality and the his-tory and cultural signi%cance of food as his great passion. Alf is a third generation in a long line of shell%sh %shers and has been involved with seafood one way or the other since 1975. He is just as well known in these parts as the Shell-%shman, a hat he quite literally wears with great pride and charm as he takes his guests on a verbal journey through the history of the restaurant.

#e founding idea was to o!er seafood experiences to business and conference-groups. #is has led to a number of regular clients and a steady in&ux from people looking to set their conference or seminars in a new and exciting setting.

– We are actually closer to the «world» than the city of Bergen, says Odd Einar. – A few short minutes with a bus, then some ten minutes with a boat and youre here. It's quick and convenient, which makes us unique and perfect as a host for out of town companies looking for novel tailormade experiences.

– We have even had companies &ying in from Ger-many just to have their seminar and dinner with us before they leave for home again in the evening, all with great success, says Alf.

Cornelius is by all measures a unique experience. #e restaurant is located on Holmen, right by Bjorøy, with a beautiful view of Kobbeleia, the island of Sotra and Vatlestraumen. #e two entrepeneurs have slowly built a restaurant that has kitchens spanning two &oors, several bars, the possibility to open up to the elements and a con-ference setting with the latest in technologies. Most of the walls are glass and the wild elements of coastal Norway are never far away.

– We have built the place slowly and been very cons-cious of the materials we have used. Expansions have been made over the years in order to allow more customers and new ways to show o! the business were in, says Odd Einar, – the business of making food right here in the elements. We want our guests to have a full experience based on the coastal culture of Western Norway, but in a modern setting.

– #e latest kitchen we have added to the concept is a restaurant with an open kitchen, based on the old boat-houseculture here in Western Norway, says Odd Einar. – In the boathouse people went to get fresh %sh, they boiled crab and much of the social life for %shing communities was in just such a setting.

In addition to the kitchen on the ground &oor, the restaurant sports a demonstrationkitchen i the combi-ned conference and diningroom spaces on the %rst &oor.

The restaurant Cornelius is no more than half an hour from the City of Bergen, and can only be reached by boat. In spite of this, or perhaps for this very reason, it has become

the most popular seafood restaurant in Bergen in just a few short years.

#e guests can have a live view of Odd Einar making food, all transferred on to a big screen, or even a live feed from an underwater camerea of Alf diving for mussels or other crustacions in the sea just outside the restaurant – all of it to make the guests part of an experience you just don t get anywhere else.

Cornelius is a lisenced shell %sh dealer – and evidence of that trade can be seen outside the restaurant as a speci-ally constructed shell%sh tower makes it easy to keep crab, lobster, mussels, oysters and all the other exciting, wonder- ful crustacions and shell%sh fresh and healthy before being used in the restaurant or shipped o! to be sold. A sample tasting of raw shell%sh is part of the experience for visitors to Cornelius.

– #e restaurant have a lot of %rst time samplers of oysters, sea urchins and other treats from the sea on its conscience, says Alf with a smile, – most people are plea-santly surprised.

#e main kitchen is located by the pier, and is designed to make it possible for the guests to be a part of the expe-rience of making seafood, even to the extent taking part in a seafood cooking class if the guests should want it. #e hosts are not strangers to taking the time to tell the guests the philosophy of the food they prepare on Corne-lius and how they procure their ingredients, much to the delight of the guests.

– #e weather is the key decision maker in how we set our menues, says Odd Einar. We have what we like to call a meteorological concept, the weather decides the setting and view from the restaurant and the time of year decides much of the ingredients we decide to use. If the weather is warm and sunny we can open up the restaurant to the outside, set the table on the pier and pick a lighter menu. If the weather is stormy we set the tables with candlelight and warm colors inside.

– #e weather do in&uence what we people like to eat. If its nice and warm you feel more inclined to a lighter meal, if its heavy rain we make something sturdier, food that will keep you warm. You can almost say that we are in the weather as we make our food here.

– Our focus is on using the best raw materials out there at any given time. Our seafood is literally straight from the sea and our whole concept is built around the best quality available. We want to be able to trace the seafood from %sherman to our kitchen, and make sure its been treated as best as it can and that its been kept cool at all times before it reaches us. If the raw materials are not up to scratch we let the %shermen know, they deliver to our doorstep a"er all.

– Our chefs have extensive experience in how to handle and prepare seafood, we spend a lot of time and resources on training and developing their skills and knowledge, something we feel is well worth the e!ort.

– Our Winecellar is, as it should be, well stocked with the best wines available to the di!erent courses and meals we have on our menu. Our Sommelièr, Fredrik Molin has the responsibility of picking out wines for the wincellar – which is naturally cooled by the ocean outside cooling o! the rock that comes up out of the ocean and makes up

the back wall of it. #is makes for the ideal temperature, summer as winter. Fredrik has extensive experience and knowledge, as well as a long education in the %ne art of wine, somthing he is happy to use to make the experience of eating a meal at Cornelius a full &avored one. – Our goal is to deliver a wholehearted concept where the setting around our culinary delights are as important as the food itself – we feel the value of eating a meal with us is enhan-ced by giving our clients a perspective of how the food is made, where it comes from and why we choose to serve it in the fashion that we do, %nishes Odd Einar.

And in regards to culinary value to a meal – they most certainly do deliver at Cornelius.

Sommelièr Fredrik Molin opens a champagne bottle from Cornelius' impressive winecellar.
