Co-President’s Message – Buddy Feldman

One of the unique strengths of Seaside Jewish Community is the commitment by our members to volunteer for the many tasks that help Seaside run efficiently. Our volunteers gladly share their expertise, and their hard work helps to substantially reduce our operating budget.

On June 2 at Seaside we heard from the volunteer Expansion Committee. Seaside’s membership has grown so much that our current building is not large enough to safely and securely accommodate our members for all of the events that fill Seaside’s calendar.

Under the leadership of Mat Ash, and with the many hours of hard work by the dedicated members of the Expansion Committee, a comprehensive plan has been formulated and approved by the Board. The planning has taken into account the wishes of our members. Seaside’s spirit and mission have been at the forefront of the committee’s thoughts.

Our new, larger, more secure, more accommodating, and more beautiful building will mark another milestone in Seaside’s remarkable history. It is a symbol of Seaside’s growth from strength to strength.

Thank you to everyone who has had a part in this important project.

Our weekly Email blasts on Thursdays contain important reminders and highlight our events. To sign up, go to the SJC website and click on the

Message from Reb Lisa July marks my one-year

anniversary with Seaside Jewish Community.

It has been a rich and fulfilling year getting to know so many of you and celebrating Shabbat, Holy Days, Interfaith Community programs, Religious School, B’nai Mitzvah, yoga, chant and meditation, life cycle events, joys, and sorrows. I’ve learned much from so many of you about the “culture of Seaside” and the colorful stories which make up our diverse and welcoming community.

This month we will celebrate Havdalah on the Beach and be together worshipping more frequently, which is a great blessing! We will also move forward with our Building Project, and there will be exciting changes coming soon!

From generation to generation, L’dor Vador, we have thrived as a people through our continual ability to adapt and change while growing and learning, honoring Shabbat, performing acts of loving kindness, and repairing our world, Tikkun Olam. Together we will continue to make Seaside a place where everyone feels welcome and finds a spiritual home. Thank you for making me feel so welcomed here in Rehoboth at Seaside.

Capital Campaign Goals Continued from page 1

-The construction industry in Lower Slower Delaware is booming – contractors are busy – and this drives costs up.

With the amount we have raised and a mortgage that has already been approved, we have access to the funds we need. Our task now is to reduce the size of the loan and to avoid long-term debt. The Capital Campaign Committee will approach local businesses, apply for grants (one for security is already submitted), and ask members for continued support.

Seaside’s support has been amazing, and now we are asking for your continued involvement. Consider renewing last year’s gift this summer. Use your IRA required minimum distribution to make a win-win gift this year and next.

Marilyn Feldman addresses congregants during SJC’s Building Expansion Update event on June 2. The Capital Campaign has raised $753,000 as of this month’s issue of the Newsletter.

Minutes of SJC Board Minutes are available to interested members after the Board approves them. Copies may be obtained by

contacting our Secretary.

Page 4 Seaside Jewish Community July 2019 Movie Night July 14

The Adult Education Committee is pleased to announce the showing of Making Trouble on Sunday, July 14 at 7 p.m.

This movie played at 70 film festivals in the US and abroad in 2007–2008. It is an entertaining documentary about six funny Jewish women: Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Wendy Wasserstein, and Gilda Radner. The movie captures the important and little-known legacy of these comedians. Join us for this screening, popcorn, and discussion. New From the Social Committee!

Do you have a special interest that you’d like to share or a group that you’d like to gather? Chances are that someone, or many somebodies, at Seaside may share your passion.

Leslie Gladstone enjoys bowling. He found some like-minded folks, and SJC now has an active and close-knit group of bowlers. Rusty Kruglak is a recreational cyclist, and he’s looking for others to join him on the trail. (see ad below)

If you have an interest you’d like to share, don’t be shy, let us know. We’ll help you get the word out. Contact Fran Saltzman, [email protected] or Pat Powell, [email protected].

Like to Cycle? Interested in joining a bike riding group? Contact Rusty Kruglak at [email protected] or 202-498-6866

Seaside Book Group July 18 The next meeting for the Seaside

Book Group will be held on July 18 at 7 p.m., when we will discuss The Last Watchman of Old Cairo, by Michael David Lukas. Published in 2018, this book received the 2019 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. The fictional story toggles between Cairo in the 11th century, the 19th century, and the present day. Please join us to discuss this remarkable book. If you plan to attend, please email the book group facilitator, Enid L. Zafran, at [email protected], so that we will have an idea of how many people to expect.

The Book Group has also selected two more books to read for 2019. For the Sept. 19 meeting, we will discuss Inheritance, by Dani Shapiro, and on Nov. 21, the selection is Safekeeping, by Jessamyn Hope. We look forward to a lively discussion about each book and hope that you will be there. Wednesday Mornings at Seaside

Every Wednesday, 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., you’ll find the SJC doors open for those interested in a contemplative, spiritual,

peace-filled start to their day. Meditation, chant, and prayer are included. Everyone,

including folks wanting to learn the practice of meditation, is welcome.

Special Summer Haftarah Class July 15

The Adult Education Committee is pleased to announce a special summer session of the Haftarah class at SJC on Monday, July 15 from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

The class will discuss the Haftarah for Va’etchanan (Isaiah 40:1-26) better known as Haftarah “Nahamu” (“Comfort You”) from the repeated first words of the Haftarah. The Haftarah marks the end of the preceding three Haftarot of Admonition and is the first of the seven Haftarot of Comfort regarding the Babylonian Exile and its end. These Haftarot are read in the summer, immediately after Tish-ah b’Av.

This class will consider several questions, including: Who was the Second Isaiah? What was the significance of the Babylonian Exile in Jewish thought and history? How does the Haftarah answer the timeless question of why bad things happen to good people? How does the Haftarah and the Second Isaiah relate to the visions of the earlier Isaiah? What is the theology and concept of G-d of the Second Isaiah and this Haftarah?

Come prepared to discuss! Knowledge of Hebrew is not a prerequisite. The Haftarah class will resume in October with a complete schedule of nine more sessions covering Haftarot not discussed in prior years.

Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip closest to the building only if you have difficulty walking on the gravel. That way, the strip is available for those who need the firmer surface to walk safely.

July 2019 Seaside Jewish Community Page 5 Jewish Intellectual History July 10

The SJC Adult Education Committee continues its monthly examination of Jewish Intellectual History at Seaside. On Wednesday, July 10 at 4 p.m., Ira Wexler will lead a discussion about a small group of German-Jewish Intellectuals who founded the Society for the Culture and Sciences of the Jews in 1819. The hope of these Intellectuals was to reveal the greater significance of Jewish civilization within the general intellectual and spiritual context of humanity.

On Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m., the topic of the discussion will be the Jewish historian, Heinrich Graetz (1818–1891). Author of the monumental 11-volume History of the Jews, Graetz used history as a battleground to defend Judaism against its Christian detractors, including the famed German historian Heinrich Von Treitschke. Rabbi Rami Visit August 10

Save Saturday, August 10, for Rabbi Rami’s return visit to SJC. The Adult Education Committee will sponsor a light dinner from 5-6 p.m., followed by Rabbi Rami’s presentation and concluding with Havdalah. This promises to be an educational, spiritual, and uplifting evening. Don’t miss it!

Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an SJC event but thought you couldn't afford it? SJC policy is to work with you if you have a financial hardship. Please contact the treasurer to confidentially discuss your situation.

Food Rescue Initiative Seaside is a partner with

Epworth United Methodist Church in the Epworth/SJC Joint Food Initiative to end hunger in the Rehoboth Beach area. As part of that initiative, Seaside’s and Epworth’s Food Rescue Teams collect unused, outdated, unwanted, or extra food from area restaurants or businesses to deliver to Epworth’s food pantry.

The Initiative has been very successful in rescuing food that would otherwise have been thrown out. During 2018, more than 100,000 pounds of food was donated to the Food Rescue Initiative. As of mid-June, more than 88,000 pounds of food has been rescued this year.

If you would like more information about the Initiative or to volunteer, contact Hank Smith at 302-644-1581 or Reba or Barry Novich at 301-922-8414. Food Bank Volunteers

A group of 13 volunteers from Seaside worked at the Delaware Food Bank on June 18, following up on the success of Mitzvah Day at the Food Bank in April. We sorted and packed 1,600 pounds of food. We also assembled bags for the summer nutrition program to provide children with healthy meals to take home.

Volunteers included the grandchildren of members Helen and Ron Vederman. What a gratifying way to spend a summer afternoon!

Our next volunteer day at the food bank will take place in the fall. To sign up for the email list for this program, contact Emily Eider at [email protected] or 610-781-4175.

Mitzvah Opportunities Helping Hands Volunteers:

The Chesed Committee is looking for additional volunteers to provide meals, run small errands, or visit with members who need temporary support. Contact Ellie Flanzraich at 561-504-7922 to sign up.

Delaware Food Bank Volunteers: We held our second volunteer day at the Delaware Food Bank on June 18 with a dozen participants, including two grandchildren learning about Tikkun Olam. Thank you to a great crew! Our next date will be announced in the fall.

Food Rescue: Volunteer to collect food donations from area restaurants and businesses to deliver to the Epworth food pantry. Contact Hank Smith at 302-644-1581 if you would like to help.

Epworth Soup Kitchen (ongoing): The next date is Sunday, July 7, with food preparation on Friday, July 5. Contact Dill Patz at [email protected], 302-537-4368.
