I was lucky enough to watch our girls’ soccer team compete in the School Sports WA state soccer finals on Friday night. I am both proud and pleased to announce that Riverton won the championships! We are the state champions! Congratulations to all the girls on such a fantastic achievement, and especially to Clara who won the Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) for the whole championship. The atmosphere on the night was electric and really exciting. Our girls played their hearts out, supported enthusiastically by a large group of parents and family members who cheered constantly throughout the three games the girls played. Talented and enthusiastic, our girls, fresh from winning the regional interschool competition, competed strongly, played as a team and gained the ultimate reward for their efforts. Thanks so much to Mr Brooks for all his hard work in preparing, organising and coaching the girls, and to Mrs London for her support through the regional games. Finally, thank you so much to the parents who came along to support and helped make it a great evening for the students. Go Rivo! The National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) gets underway this week across all schools in Australia for students in Years 3, 5, 7and 9. Our Year 3 and 5 students will be completing the tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week, with catch-ups on Friday. The students will be tested in the areas of Writing, Language Conventions, Reading and Numeracy. The results of the tests and the accompanying data will be returned in mid Term 3. This data will be analysed by the school at a whole school, classroom and individual level and will be used to help inform our planning for future teaching and learning, with areas of need identified. Individual student reports will be sent home to parents. The Year 5 class in Room 7 spent some time learning about bike maintenance and safety yesterday, with an incursion by an expert. This subject is very important as many children ride bikes around the area near their home, as well as to and from school. Practical tips are an important way to help the students maintain their bikes and be safe when riding them along and around our roads. Thank you to Mrs Newman for organising this important incursion. You may notice our new flag poles in the front quadrangle of the campus this week. We have removed the old pole and replaced it with three new ones. We are now flying the Australian Flag, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Island Flag. These are the same as the flags we now have at our weekly assemblies in the Covered Assembly Area. This is in line with the protocols and requirements for public schools. Girls Soccer ndash State Championships Last Friday on the 11th of May the Riverton PS Girlsrsquo Soccer Team competed in the 12th School Girlsrsquo State Championships at Beale Park in Spearwood The girls played against some pretty tough opposition throughout the night The Quarter Finals match had us playing against Banksia Park We got off to a good start in the first half scoring a couple of goals and seemed to be in control of the match However in the second half Banksia lifted their game and scored a couple of times to make it a closer contest The game ended in a 3 - 2 win to Riverton Our next opponent in the Semi Finals was South Coast Baptist College (a specialist soccer school) We were unlucky to concede the first goal which was flagged for offside but overruled by the main referee Our girls then took control of the game creating lots of chances We equalised but South Coast scored again straight after our goal With two minutes left in the first half we managed to score again and tied the scores at 2 - 2 We reset at halftime and kept working hard Riverton scored another goal (midway through the second half) We then had to defend for the remainder of the match holding off the opposition to win a thrilling game 3-2 That result sent us into the Grand Final match to play Parkwood The Grand Final got of the best possible start with an early goal We then took control of the game for large periods of time finishing as the State Champions with a 4 - 1 win This was the first time Riverton has won this competition and was also the first time a team from the Eastern Region has won Congratulations to all the girls for all of their hard work and a special thank you to Mr Grundy and the parents family members who came down to support the girls Congratulations to Clara who also received the MVP award for Most Valuable Player of the Championships Girls Soccer ndash State Championships Results Quarter Final ndash Riverton won against Banksia Park 3 ndash 2 Semi Final ndash Riverton won against South Coast Baptist College 3 ndash 2 Grand Final ndash Riverton won against Parkwood 4 ndash 1 parkrun 100th Run Congratulations to Alex for completing his 100th parkrun last Saturday (120518) Alex is now the third student from Riverton PS to achieve this milestone Thank you to the Riverton PS community members who came down to support Alex on this great achievement Rhys Brooks Physical Education Specialist
