As I reflect upon the accomplishments of IIMK in the last ten years, I am reminded of thequality practice that has allowed us to grow where we are today. The Institute has alwaysbeen aware of the fact that it has a critical role to play in providing leadership to everyindividual practitioner coming out of its portals of learning. Inspired by the many possibilitiesthat lie ahead, we move forward with new project initiatives, continuous improvement andtheir direct impact on management education. Aware that our expanding future holdsgreat promise we are constantly striving to find new and better ways to carry out thismandate. Leadership status comes out of quality practices which encompasses activitiesfar beyond those of a quality management programme. The team is building a dynamicrelationship with all its stakeholders as it tackles issues of professional importance. It ismy wish that IIMK is where innovation and creativity can find real purpose, where businessplanning is about enabling sustainable enterprise and where entrepreneurs can begroomed to take on the mantle of the effective management of profitable growth. It is onlya question of time before our Institute becomes a major learning resource centre in theAsia-Pacific region.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

(ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION)

IIM Kozhikode (IIM-K) has been rapidly growing in the last one decade. On growth, IIM-Khas perhaps evoked the envy of others. Despite being a late entrant in managementeducation, IIM-K became a pioneer in introducing trend-setting new managementprogrammes. Others followed what we successfully established. IIM-K’s delicate approachto picking students and faculty members had greatly paid off. Our faculty members had,in the past, a record of achieving the highest average number of publications amongsimilar institutions. IIM-K had achieved recognition as the top institute in India in terms ofGoogle Scholar web presence. IIM-K has excellent academic facilities, which form key toits achievements.

Our students have successfully established their reputation in the corporate sector. Thishas its implications. IIM-K could comfortably place all its students in advance even in atough placement season like March 2009. Companies choose to flock IIM-K campus. Anyvisitor to IIM-K Campus instantly falls in love with it. Its ambience is beyond anybody’simagination. This is understandable – among IIMs, only IIM-K can boast of being the‘God’s Own IIM’, partly by virtue of its association with the God’s Own Country. As part ofa city named one of the best to live in India, IIM-K has a vibrant campus life. With itsexistence in Kerala, which is one of the most peaceful places in India, Calicut (Kozhikode)offers an excellent city life and a nostalgic memory to an alumnus. IIM-K is in the vicinity ofnational institutions like NIT Calicut, Indian Institute of Spices Research etc and it enjoysthe visibility of a premier institution. IIM-K is also part of an exciting history. Vasco DaGama, the first European to arrive in India by the sea route, first landed in Calicut(Kozhikode). Calicut is well connected to cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin,Coimbatore, Mangalore, Mumbai, etc. Many tourist hotspots of Kerala are within arm’sreach.

IIM-K is a big force in India not only in PGP but also in executive education, executivetraining, developing the faculty of other institutions, doctoral programme, and consulting. Our Social Development Projects give a unique opportunity to every student to do livesocial projects involving NGOs and public organizations. IIM-K also provides a window tounderstand the Social Transformation of India against the backdrop of its influence onbusiness and management.

To be associated with IIM-K is, therefore, a lifetime opportunity. Nonetheless, if you are notlucky enough to join IIM-K as a student, you could still hope to be a lucky one visiting IIM-K as a participant in the wonderful academic events and games that its students organizefrom time to time. So, you could choose between being an admirer and the owner of thisgreat institution.

Be your own decision maker.

My good wishes are always with you.

PEDAGOGY

THE CASE METHOD

The case method creates a classroom in which students succeed by applying the theoreticalknowledge in the face of real-life managerial problems. Problem solving and analyticalskills are honed through case studies. The case method encourages students to express apoint of view, suggest hypotheses, and come to some conclusions even when faced withconsiderable uncertainty, akin to reality. The case method enables the students to think ontheir feet, listen, reason, defend, and work as a team. The cases used in the classroom arereviewed every year to ensure continuing relevance to today’s business environment.

LECTURES & DEMONSTRATIONS

Lectures and demonstrations are the primary means by which theoretical frameworks andtools of analysis are introduced and reinforced by the faculty. This methodology aims toproduce managers with cross-functional skills, teaching them to be effective team playersand develop an entrepreneurial approach to complex business situations

GROUP-WORK & PROJECTS

A major component of most courses, group work and projects allow highly capableindividuals to channelize their creative energies and work as a team towards a goal. Workingclosely with talented peers from different backgrounds and domain expertise enables thestudents to hone the vital skills of relationship building and team play. Projects are longerterm group assignments that develop the students’ ability to analyze larger problems andpresent plans and solutions. Special emphasis is placed on communication and presentationskills during the final presentation of the results of the project work.

ROLE PLAY

Role play is a very powerful pedagogical tool that allows students to get an understandingof another person’s views and biases. Role playing is used selectively and properly toenhance communication skills and the ability to empathize with different points of view.

CURRICULUM

The first year syllabus lays the foundation in functional areas of Marketing, Finance,Economics, Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management, Operations andInformation Technology along with unique courses like Social Transformation in India,Business Ethics and Environment Management that serve to expand students’ horizonsand sensitize them to social, ethical and environmental issues they would encounter in the

Page 11: Iimk Pgp Brochure 2011

business environment. In keeping pace with market trends and anticipating business’requirements, each year fresh subjects and new courses are introduced in addition tomodifying and updating existing courses based on feedback from students and industry.

The emphasis is on learning processes and learning outcomes for enhancement ofmanagerial competencies. The Management Development Programmes offered by theInstitute provide a link for updating the PGP curriculum so that the students are equippedwith the necessary skills to respond to the challenges posed by business and industry.

The course instructor decides the method of evaluation and communicates it to the studentsat the beginning of the course. Normally the evaluation consists of varying combinations ofthe following components: Assignments, Quizzes, Class Participation, Project Work, Mid-Term Examination, End-Term Examination and any other as decided by the instructor.

GRADING SYSTEM & GRADUATION

IIMK follows a 13 point grading scheme. The instructor awards Letter grades to the courseparticipants at the end of each course, with each letter grade standing for a particulargrade point.

The Term Grade Point Average (TGPA) is weighted average of the grade points in all thecourses in that term, weighed by the credits of each course. The Cumulative Grade PointAverage (CGPA) which is the weighted average of TGPAs is calculated at the end of theyear.

LIVE PROJECTS

IIMK students get good industry exposure by working on live industry projects during their2 year tenure which come up in practically almost all areas. The students are selected by ashort-listing of curriculum vitae and interviews involving the industry stakeholders.

The growing list of live projects is a testimony to the fact that leading industry playersrecognize the forte of IIMK students and faculty. This is a mutually beneficial system whereinthe students benefit by getting an exposure to industry conditions and the industry benefitsby the expertise of faculty and students. Some live industry projects are handled by thefaculty themselves and students assist them in different areas.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS

Summer Internships give the platform to students to relate management theory to practiceas it gives a hands-on experience in a true business environment. It also ensures that thecandidates get a detailed overview of the vertical they aspire to pursue further, as oftendecisions regarding the functional specialization and the type of organization they want tojoin are influenced by their summer internship. IIMK has Summer Internship as a compulsorypart of its course curriculum and every PGP participant has to undergo 8 weeks of internshipafter the completion of the first year.

The process starts with the interested companies conducting Pre-Placement Talk outliningthe various roles and the stipend being offered. Resumes of interested candidates are sentto the companies who revert back with a shortlist. The companies then arrive on campus toconduct the selection process and make offers to students.

The Summers Process at IIMK has always seen the best business houses participate andoffer some of the most challenging and lucrative roles across all leading B-Schools.

SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

A deep and unwavering concern for society and the environment is pervasive in all IIMKactivities. It is the only IIM to have a Social Development Project (SDP) as a mandatoryrequirement for course completion. The project spans over the 4th and 5th terms, and actsas an acid test for the students’ ability to provide viable solutions for the real world. Thisproject is a logical extension of the case method wherein the students themselves write thecase on a socially relevant problem, analyze it, design a solution, and go on to implementit in the field.

The central aim of the project is to sensitize the student to the social context that theyoperate in, and provide a base for making a real, tangible and positive contribution to thesociety. The SDP is exclusive of the summer training program. While the summer trainingintends to provide a structured exposure of a functional field in an actual businessenvironment, the SDP is perhaps a more challenging task since it involves understanding, conceptualizing and implementing a feasible solution for a challenge being faced by thecommon man solely by the students. The students are ably guided by appropriate facultytowards this end.

Noteworthy projects that have made a real difference to the society include

Helping P.T. Usha (acclaimed to be one the best female Indian athlete ever) conceptualizeand operationalize a sports academy for the lesser privileged sections of the society.

Bringing in new technology for coconut oil refinement converting it to very high grade oiland setting up a supply chain which helped the local firms increase their margins by upto 300%.

Working with NASSCOM to come up with a detailed strategic plan for making Kozhikodethe next IT destination (ongoing project).
