Now expanded to 70+ cities worldwide*The rules are really simple*When people first hear about Ignite, they think its ridiculous.

How can you condense an epic, 3 hour performance down to 5 minutes?*Theyre missing the point you dont condense the whole presentation, but distil the essence of it.

Treat your talk as an elevator pitch. You want to interest people enough that they ask you the details over a beer at the bar.

What do you want people to remember about your talk tomorrow? Not the details, but the overall message.

*What do you want people to remember about your talk tomorrow?

Not details, but the overall message.*Go analog, and start with Post-It notes

Most inexperienced presenters fire up Powerpoint and start immediately, but theres something about working on paper or a whiteboard which fosters clearer thinking.

Read more in Slide:ology and Presentation Zen about this idea.*Most presentations youve probably done before have been corporate in nature in a boardroom or at a conference.

This is what people are used to when they think of presentations.*The thing is, most of these presentations are really, really boring. And not very effective.*Most peoples presentations look like this. They stand in front of the screen and read the text, line by excruciating line

Its called Death By Powerpoint, and most people expect it.*Powerpoint (and even Keynote) almost forces the inexperienced presenter to use bullet points, but theyre the worst form of communication ever.*Think of the best stories or speeches in history Jesuss sermon on the mount, or Martin Luther King with I have a dream, or Barack Obama with yes we can.

How much less effective would they be with bullet points? Dont use bullet points for your Ignite talk*On the movie theme, lets make things more exciting and visual. James Bond films open with an explosion, not with an About Us slide.

Be more like James Bond, and open your presentation with something exciting and compelling. The details come later, if at all (who cares where you work?)

So where can you download legal images like this?*Go to the Presentation Zen website for some great links.

http://presentationzen.blogs.com/presentationzen/2006/01/where_can_you_f.html*Dont do this. Get legal images, and attribute them.

Its good karma.*We dont allow the use of animations, fancy transitions, sound effects, embedded videos, etc. The slides must be static.

This is because the slides are there to support you, not take the attention away from you.

With a 15 second time limit youre almost guaranteed not to be perfect with your timing. This doesnt matter with static slides but is immediately apparent when you use animations.*Ignite should be more like a circus than a conference its an entertaining show where exciting things are always happening.

This is why its held in the local pub rather than a boardroom. We work hard to make it fun and entertaining for the audience.

Theyre here unpaid in their own time, so we owe it to them to give them a good show.*Dont bury your head in notes youll lose your connection to the audience.

Your slides should act as your notes. Design them so that seeing the image prompts you. There will be a monitor facing the presenter so you wont need to turn your back to the audience.*Practise your talk a few times in front of an audience, or a webcam. Youre practising recovering from when it goes wrong, NOT trying to get it perfect. More details at http://userfirstweb.com/328/successful-ignite-presentations

You want to be familiar enough with your talk that you could give it without looking at the screen. The slides are simply there as a prompt to remind you of what to say.*Dont you dread that moment before the presenter hits F5, when you see the number of slides in the deck? Or when you get to see their desktop and the photos of their kids on holiday?

Its your indication that youre in for Death By Powerpoint As part of making Ignite more like a show, we never leave presentation mode.*This means we need to do a lot of work in the background. Dont turn up on the night and ask us to change your slides!*Since there are no animations or transitions, we may actually convert from one format to another but youll never know. In fact, some Ignites convert everything to PDF and run it using a Python script!

It doesnt matter since you never touch the laptop.*We set the projector at 1024 x 768 pixels resolution. You might think you need a higher resolution, but it wont be visible to people at the back of the room, or watching on YouTube.

Stand a few metres back from your laptop screen if you cant read it, neither can the audience.

Your slides are a billboard rather than a Word document.*Ignite is the antidote to boring presentations.

So make sure you have fun. Grab a beer, give a great presentation, and stick around to support the other presenters.*
