DESCRIPTION
Pre-rendering maps into a tile cache like those used by Google and Bing Maps is computationally expensive. How do you create one if you don’t happen to have have a million dollar data-center or rendering farm? By being smart and only pre-rendering where your users are likely to look. This talk describes building such a cache using open-data (OpenStreetMap, Natural Earth, TIGER/Line), and an open-source mapping software stack (Quantum GIS, PostGIS, Mapnik) running on a cloud-computing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS): Amazon Web Services (AWS) Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2).
