“All the power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” Among the most magnificent passages in the New Testament is the hymn in Paul’s Letter to the Philippians. Jesus Christ is described as one who surrenders equality with us. It’s an awe-inspiring exchange. Who would do it but God alone? Yet here at the close of Matthew’s gospel, on the far side of the empty tomb, Jesus returns to his disciples to tell them that all power has been restored to him. He who once emptied himself and bowed as low as a slave, has now been lifted up to the highest place. Jesus has become the demonstration of his own teaching. The meek one inherits the earth, the lowly one surpasses the wealthiest, and the despised outcast now rules the world’s kings. In our most morose news cycle, there’s comfort in knowing no name is greater than Jesus. Even better is the revelation that Jesus remains with us until the end of time: your time, mine, and everyone’s. We meet a lot of people who think they’re in charge. Only one authority is worthy of that claim. Power is an attribute of God, but earthly authorities also wield a hefty amount. How do you use the power that’s in your hands?

A message from Fr. Heuberger / Mensaje del Padre Heuberger
Farewell Weekend June 2 – 3 Next weekend there will be cake served after all the Masses. Moves that will affect St. Vincent’s:
Gigi Wolf is the new school principal, effective July 1st. Sr. Flor will be returning to her Mother House in Mexico City, leaving June 11th to help take care of her ill Father. Fr. Fredy will be leaving June 11th, assigned to Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church in Central Point. Fr. Heuberger leaving June 30th, assigned in Portland to be “in residence” at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish on SE 52nd & Woodstock. Fr. Manuel Becerra is assigned to St. Vincent’s as pastor, arriving June 29th.
“May the Lord protect our going out and our coming in, from this time forth and for evermore.” (Psalm 120:8).
Memorial Day For our men and women who have died in service to our country, may the Lord keep in His mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into His Kingdom of justice and peace. There will be Mass at St. Barbara Cemetery on Monday at 2 pm.
Trinity Sunday “Truly you are a God of Mystery, O God of Israel.” (Isaiah 45:15). This is why even those who say they do not believe in God have a St. Christopher medal. We still need to have mystery in our lives, even if we do not believe in God. God made us this way. Nothing makes sense unless we see God as mystery. The prayer of the Church today on this Trinity Sunday is that the God of mystery lead us into His mystery. Our faith and our hope rests in the mystery of God.

Dear Faithful of the Archdiocese of Portland, Beginning on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ this year (June 3, 2018), Archbishop Sample has determined that during the celebration of Holy Mass, after the Lamb of God, the faithful will kneel. This change will unite us with the Universal Church, the majority of the Dioceses in the United States and the other diocese (Baker) in the State of Oregon. More importantly, it will aid in the reverent participation of the Holy Mass and increase our devotion to the Holy Eucharist. The current General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states under the section regarding Movement and Postures that: “The faithful kneel after the Agnus Dei unless the diocesan Bishop determines other-wise.” [43] After the Lamb of God, the faithful should remain kneeling until they move from their place to receive Holy Communion. The tradition of remaining kneeling after the reception of Holy Communion until the priest has returned to his seat is to be commended. Those who cannot kneel due to infirmity or other impediment should be seated so as to not impede the view of those who kneel.

Congratulations to the children who received their Sacrament of First Communion over the last two weeks. We had 5 beautiful Masses to celebrate all of these children. Banners, group photos and First Communion Certificates are available in the Gathering Area to be picked up this weekend only. They are arranged by the dates the children received, then in alphabetical order by the children's names. Please keep the stacks as neat as possible. The group photos will be in the envelopes with the certificates. If your child did not make a banner, just look for the envelope with their name.
We will be open limited hours this last week; and will close for the summer on Thursday, May 31 at 5 pm. We will reopen on August 1 at 10 am. All banners and certificates not picked up this weekend will be taken to our office and you can pick up in August.
