Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come.” How much of our lives do we spend asleep? Literally, about a third. But practically speaking, a great deal more than that. Our routines dull our appreciation of life as we wander on autopilot through our responsibilities. We rarely “Chop wood! Fetch water!” in the ecstasy of Buddhist monks who practice making every act both a prayer and a celebration. We eat many meals without tasting our food, slump numbly in front of the computer or television hardly aware of what’s in front of us. Make a pledge this Advent season: to be aware, awake, and alive. Walk with a purpose, feeling the movement in your muscles and bones, body, and blood. Lift your graze and notice what’s around you. Listen to the person talking to you. Feel your feelings. Breathe. Consider keeping an Advent journal. Write down what you see, feel, and think with a renewed attention to the gift of life.

Advent We need four weeks of waiting. We need to make the Advent wreath. We need to embrace the darkness. We need to light the candles around the family table. We need to go and search the Scriptures about the meaning of the Savior. We need to read Isaiah again, and listen to the words of John the Baptist. We need to wait for four weeks with a sense of expectation, and to sing the songs of Advent. We need to tell of the longing in our hearts.

Novena for Our Lady of Guadalupe Starting Monday, December 4 through December 11th, we will gather in the Church to pray the Rosary at 6 pm. All are welcome.

Immaculate Conception December 8th is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mary is the centerpiece of Advent. The scriptures seem to indicate that Christ was conceived in Mary’s heart before He was conceived in her womb. Christ is to be born in our hearts. The Gospels do not focus on Mary’s perfection. The Gospels do not focus on Mary’s privilege. They say only she was ‘blessed among women.’ She is the woman of faith.

2018 Religious Art Calendars are available for handout today. There are six hundred each in English and Spanish. This should be adequate for one per household. These calendars are free to parishioners, compliments of St. Vincent de Paul Parish and Restlawn Funeral Home.

As we await the coming birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, grades 2-8 will be learning of God's saving grace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The 2nd year students will be finishing their preparations for the upcoming reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation on December 13th at 4:30 pm.

The Religious Education Program including all parents, children, catechists and staff will be in hosting the Simbang Gabi Mass and Posada on December 18th. We will need volunteers to hand out the programs and bags of candy. Please bring your donated candy on December 4th & 5th. Thank you for your support.

We will have our Christmas lesson on December 11th & 12th.

You are invited to join the Blanchet Fine and Performing Arts students in a beautiful Christmas program rejoicing in the ancient story of Christ's birth on Thursday, December 7 at 7:00 pm at the East Salem Community Center at 1850 45th Ave NE, Salem.

The music and drama departments will present nine scripture lessons which recount the Fall, the promise of the Messiah, the Incarnation, and the Great Commission to preach the good news. Each lesson is followed by music or singing. This Christmas tradition dates back to the 19th century and continues today in congregations throughout the world. The performance is free and all are welcome to join us in celebrating and sharing the beauty of the season.
