Friends, the memories of the 19 th International Cytology Congress at Yokohama, Japan are still persistent in our minds. It was heartening to see a mega delegation from India. The enthusiasm of the participants and the academic content of oral papers, posters and talks in the Companion meeting, reflected the quality and commitment of Indian Cytologists. I deeply appreciate the vital contributions of the members of IAC. I sincerely hope that, in near future, we get the opportunity to host the International Cytology Congress in India and we leave no stone unturned in showcasing all our organizational and academic skills! The regular Cytology State Chapter activities, all over India, in the form of CMEs & Workshops, are enhancing the usefulness of cytopathology, not only as a screening and diagnostic modality, but also emphasizing the potential for new developments in cyto-diagnosis made possible through the merging of various new technologies derived from a variety of fields in medical science. It was a humbling experience, during my teaching visits to different states, to see the desperation and desire of participants, to learn cytology from basics to advances. The Annual National event of IAC, of course, the biggest forum for sharing the experiences and research achievements of all IAC members, covers all fields of Cytology. The invited International faculty: Dr Roberto Dina, Dr Moosa Khalil, Dr Ashish Chandra, Dr Kusum Kapila and our own national stalwarts will give you all, life time memories in the context of teaching and learning cytology. With the dynamism of Dr Rasika Gadkari and commitment of the entire organizing team, I am confident that CYTOCON-2016 will be an impressive event. I urge upon all faculty, residents and practicing Pathologists to attend this conference with the workshops & CME in large numbers, so that the knowledge gained through these deliberations can be disseminated to every part of the country and bring standardization in cytology concepts & reporting formats. I am eagerly looking forward to welcoming all the participants in an exceptional capacity of ‘Double host’!! Jai Hind! Secretary’s scribble Dear Friends, Having participated in the recently concluded International Congress of Cytology at Yokohama, Japan, I have come back happy with the realisation that future of cytology in India is good. Importantly, there is an X-factor to the cytology practiced in India and that is Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology. In the West and Japan, the focus appears to be more on gynaec cytology. If HPV vaccination succeeds in its mission, there will be a dramatic shift in the workload pertaining to gynaec cytology. Also, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology practice there is perceived in a different way. There was one gentleman who in his plenary lecture showed his method of practice of FNAC in USA. He showed in a video that he drapes his patients for FNAC in just the same way as you do for a surgery. While there may be legal implications relating to a given procedure, the basic strength of FNAC is its simplicity - the ability to do it with almost no instrumentation, no aid, almost anywhere and in almost any setting. Here in India, we have the ability to do aspirations rather well and interpret the smears satisfactorily on morphology before going in for ancillary tests. This double strength of a strong clinical ability and appropriate use of resources for ancillary tests will go a long way in keeping the science and art of FNAC alive and kicking in India. That brings to my mind, why can we not develop one or more centres for this art where students from world over can come to learn and carry back our style of FNA? Two new awards are being introduced this year. One is Dr Panna Choudhury Memorial Award for the first author of the best original article published by a resident Indian in the Journal of Cytology in past one year. The other is Col. D. B. Nayar Memorial Award for best oral proffered paper on oncology presented during the annual national conference of Indian Academy of Cytologists by an MBBS doctor, less than 35 years of age, who is doing or has done post- graduation in Pathology in India, in a special session designated for this award. Dr Kamal and Dr Rasika Gadkari along with their dedicated team have planned all year to offer us a scientific feast at CYTOCON 2016 at Nagpur. We have known international and national experts delivering lectures on varied topics in cytology during the conference. Do make full use of these interactions to enrich oneself and also the Academy. Till then, my best wishes to all.

Thought’s from the editor….

‘Diagnosis is not the end but the beginning of practice’

Martin H Fischer

The quote epitomises the importance of pathologists in modern day medicine, and cytopathology has made great strides in providing the ‘Vital’ definitive diagnosis to a clinician / surgeon by minimally invasive procedures and methodologies. The Indian Academy of Cytology has endeavoured to encourage this unique branch of diagnostic pathology. The recent participation by the Indian cytopathologists at the World congress held at Yokohoma, bears testimony to the vast experience shared by our colleagues at the highest stage. It is heartening to see the spurt in the number of CMEs and workshops on Cytology and the overwhelming participation by pathologists from all parts of the country. The half-yearly newsletter is a medium which gives a snapshot of the events which have culminated in the last quarter and also gives an opportunity for the members to peep into what is in the offering in the coming months. The increasing list of new members - ‘Joining the flock’, spilling into 3 pages is encouraging for the academy. The design of the newsletter has been changed to incorporate a water mark of Papanicolaou stained cervical smear – which thanks to Dr George Papanicolaou remains the most important discovery in cancer screening and a watershed period in terms of heralding the importance of cytopathology to the world. The editorial team would be happy to accept constructive ideas and inputs to further refine and improve the coming issues of the newsletter. Regards and best wishes
