Stewardship and The Virtue of Humility

T he word stewardship comes from the Greek word oikenom-

ous, which means “someone who manages a household.” A

steward doesn't OWN the household, but manages it. When we

realize that all we have and all we have been given comes from a

loving and generous God, that is a humbling realization!

To be humble is to recognize that we are not the authors of crea-

tion, but stewards of that creation. When we make the decision to

live a life of stewardship, we grow in humility. A daily life of

stewardship offers many opportunities to grow in humility.

Humility is the most basic of all of the Christian virtues. In order

to serve God and others, we need to be humble. In order to love,

we need to be humble. Humility allows us to love God and our

neighbor above ourselves. A daily life of humility offers many

opportunities to grew in faithful stewardship!

You will find many opportunities to grow in humble stewardship

listed in this parish Ministry Directory. Please prayerfully con-

sider how God may be calling you to share your gifts of time, tal-

ent and treasure at Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Faithful Stewardship

Humbly Serving God And Each Other

H umility is a virtue—but what exactly is a virtue? The Cate-

chism of the Catholic Church provides this definition:

“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever

is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excel-

lence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

“A virtue is a habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It

allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best

of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his

sensory and spiritual powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in

concrete actions.” (CCC 1803)

We can see that stewardship can also be a virtue. Our prac-

tice of faithful stewardship at Immaculate Heart of Mary shows our

gratitude for all that God has given us, as well as our desire to give

back to God and others by sharing these gifts.

Our Parish Ministries

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And

behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19

At Immaculate Heart of Mary, we strive to fulfill Jesus’

commission, which calls us to make disciples of all nations

and invites us into the mystery of the Sacraments.

FAITH FORMATION/CATECHESIS

IHM CATHOLIC SCHOOL Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School offers a

quality, faith-based Catholic education to students in

Preschool through Eighth Grade. It is the primary

ministry of our parish, as our students are learning how

to become disciples of Christ and the future leaders of

the Church. To find out about stewardship opportuni-

ties at IHM School, contact Mrs. Callie Meiller, Princi-

pal: 608-222-8831 or [email protected].

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS Share your gifts with our students by reading to

them, assisting teachers, stuffing folders, preparing

food for functions, chaperoning field trips, and as-

sisting in the lunchroom. Volunteers may also be

needed in our Athletic program (coaching or work-

ing in our concession stand) or at Home & School

Association fundraisers. Volunteers must be in compliance with Diocese of

Madison Safe Environment guidelines.

TOTUS TUUS This program provides a week during the

summer for Catholic youth to learn the

message of the Gospel and grow in their

Catholic faith. Based on the motto of St.

Pope John Paul II, Totus Tuus (Totally

Yours) offers a program for elementary

students and a program for junior and sen-

ior high school students. Emphasis is

placed on Marian devotion as well as vocational discernment. Volunteers

are welcome. Contact: Laura Soldner, 608-221-1521, ext. 313 or

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION—CHILDREN/FAMILIES

Family Formation—Grades K-6: Offered for children who are not cur-

rently enrolled at IHM Catholic School, and their parents. This program is

designed to allow parents to grow in their faith along with their children.

Classes meet MONTHLY on Wednesday evenings from 6 PM until 7:30

PM. At least one parent comes with his/her child/ren. Parents gather to

hear a presentation from an adult faith formation leader while the children

go to their grade-level classrooms for an age-appropriate lesson. Parents

work with their child/ren to complete the rest of the weekly lessons at

home at their own convenience before the next monthly gathering.

Contact Laura Soldner at 608-221-1521, ext. 313 or

[email protected].

Religious Education—Grades 7-11: Middle and High School (Grades 7-

11) classes meet 3 times per month (typically in small groups) on Wednes-

day evenings from 7:00-8:15 p.m. Faith formation continues to build from

year to year on what students have been learning and putting into practice.

As students go through their teen years, they are beginning to face many

new challenges and stronger peer pressure. By continuing to grow in their

faith and their relationship with Christ during these years, they are becom-

ing equipped to make good choices that will help them as they move into

adulthood.

Contact Shane Reinbold—608-221-1777 or [email protected]

Volunteer Catechists and Classroom Aides are always needed. Must be a

Confirmed, practicing Catholic. Background Check and Virtus training

required.

Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion:

Preparation for these two important Sacraments begins in First Grade and

is typically completed in Second Grade. Sacramental preparation includes

students from both IHM School and our Family Faith Formation program.

Preparation for Confirmation: The Sacrament of Confirmation is

typically received in the 11th Grade. Preparation for Confirmation is a

major part of the 11th Grade curriculum, but continues to build on what

has been learned through the younger grades.
