The name Braithwaite is synonymous with the storage of water. The company has gained an enviable reputation for quality and reliability, during the ninety year period in which it has manufactured and installed sectional water storage tanks. Advances in manufacturing and material technology have allowed the use of composite materials to become widely accepted in the engineering and construction industries. Braithwaite has taken advantage of these developments to provide Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) sectional water storage tanks manufactured by the hot press moulding process. Braithwaite GRP tank panels are produced using precisely measured quantities of Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) with a minimum glass content of 30% by weight. The Hot Press Moulding process features:- Controlled manufacturing conditions, panels pressed at pressures between 300 & 700 tonnes/m2 at a temperature of 150°C.

Matched metal moulds which ensure precise distribution of SMC and consistently high quality finished product.

Accelerated curing of materials with very low styrene emissions into the environment.

BENEFITS Uniformity of panel dimensions. Constant mechanical properties. Smooth surface finish on both sides of panel. Excellent resistance to ultra violet light. High strength to weight ratio. Trouble free installation and commissioning. Excellent quality of stored water. Low maintenance. Long service life.

Braithwaite GRP tank panels are designed using finite element analysis techniques with panels having a factor of safety of 8, which is in excess of the requirements of BS EN 13280: 2001 Braithwaite GRP Sectional Tanks are:- Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) approved for use with water stored at ambient temperatures.

Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) approved for domestic storage.

Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) and Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) approved for use on automatic sprinkler installations.

TANK BRACING SYSTEMS

TANKS UP TO 2 METRES DEEP Feature a clear interior, apart from intermittent vertical uPVC roof support posts. This allows virtually unhindered access during routine cleaning. Panel flanges are stiffened externally with pressed Galvanised stiffeners.

DEEPER TANKS (4 metres maximum) Feature a stainless steel tie rod system to provide strength and stability. Vertical uPVC posts support the roof of the tank. Panel flanges are stiffened externally with pressed Galvanised stiffeners.

TANK CONFIGURATIONS TANK SIZES The Braithwaite GRP sectional tank is based upon a metric panel module – The length and breadth of the tank can be increased in 0.5 metre increments, these dimensions are only limited by the space available for installation.

Tank depths range from 0.5 metres to 4 metres, again increasing in 0.5 metre increments.

EXTERNALLY FLANGED TANKS Wherever possible externally flanged tanks should be utilised because – Assembly bolts in the tank sides and base are external for ease of assembly, maintenance and inspection.

They feature a self draining base for total drainage. To install an externally flanged tank –

500mm clearance is required all round and underneath the tank for access.

900mm clearance above the tank is required in the vicinity of our standard hinged access manway.

Clearance in other areas above the tank top can be reduced as the cover of the tank is internally bolted.

All Braithwaite externally flanged tanks up to 3 metres in depth are full span as standard i.e. they only require supports at 1 metre centres. EXTERNALLY FLANGED TANKS DRAIN COMPLETELY The design of the Braithwaite externally flanged tank features a self draining base as a standard feature. The combination of convex base panels and a unique concave sump panel ensures complete drainage. This makes annual inspection and cleaning a simple task, as there is no need to pump out the contents of the tank base.

4

INTERNALLY FLANGED BASE TANKS Where storage requirements and restricted space dictate that an externally flanged tank cannot be accommodate, Braithwaite offers the option of a tank with an internally flanged base and externally flanged sides. This tank can be installed directly onto a level base. However, the base of this tank is not self draining, as water is retained in the upturned flanges of the base panels.

TANK COVERS Are self draining, cover panels being shaped in the form of a truncated pyramid. Cover panels are internally bolted. Braithwaite GRP sectional tank covers are rigid, close fitting and securely fixed. They are fitted with a sealed access manway and screened roof vent. Standard covers comply with the requirements of WRAS. DIVISIONS To enable maintenance of the tank to take place without interruption of the water supply, tanks can be fitted with divisions.

Divisions in Braithwaite tanks are structurally designed to allow the tank to operate with either compartment empty.

It is advisable for all tanks of 5000 litres and above to be fitted with a division.

TANK INSULATION & FITTINGS

5

PRE-INSULATED PANELS Braithwaite provides the option of having its panels pre-insulated with CFC free polyurethane foam. Pre-insulated panels have been successfully developed to ensure that the water within the tank remains at an ambient temperature, therefore complying with WRAS requirements. Braithwaite offers panels with pre-insulation 25mm or 50mm thick. The CFC free polyurethane foam layer is sealed beneath a plastic skin, as shown in the diagram below. The insulation covers the whole of the face of the tank panel.

STANDARD TANK FITTINGS Braithwaite GRP tanks feature the following fitting as standard – 600mm diameter access manway with sealed hinged lid.

Roof vent with insect screen. Durable uPVC plastic internal access ladder for tanks 1.5m deep and above.

OPTIONAL FITTINGS Galvanised external ladders to BS.4211 Stainless steel internal ladders Ballvalve boxes Contents gauges Anti-vermin screens for overflow and warning pipes to comply with WRAS.

Spill-over weir boxes to provide type ‘A’ air gaps. PIPE CONNECTIONS Pipe connections can be provided to suit all kinds of pipework, our standard types of connection are – BSP brass bosses up to 65mm in diameter for

screwed pipework. From 80mm to 150mm ABS plastic flanged stools are

utilised for flanged pipework to BS.4504 Table NP16.Other sizes and types of connection can be supplied to meet most requirements. When specifying, care should be taken to avoid the use of dissimilar metals, which can cause problems with bi-metallic corrosion.

TANKS TO COMPLY WITH WRAS Where tanks are specified to comply with WRAS,Braithwaite provide their sectional GRP tanks with – Pre-insulated panels, to protect against heat and frost.

Screens for overflow and warning pipes to exclude insects.

All Braithwaite sectional GRP tanks are fitted with sealed access manways and screened roof vents as standard items.

TANK SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS

6

EXTERNALLY FLANGED TANKS UP TO 3 METRES HIGH Dwarf walls in brick or concrete should be built in one direction only beneath each seam of the tank. They should exceed the length or width of the tank by 300mm overall (see detail A). An alternative method of support is by universal beams positioned on top of cross walls running in the other direction (see detail B). For tanks with half panels in either their length or breadth, and tanks above 3 metres in height please refer to our Technical Sales Department for support details.

* If only one span is required, ‘A’ must be increased by 20mm to 1040mm.

INTERNALLY FLANGED BASE TANKS This type of tank must be supported over the entire area of its base. If supported on a concrete slab it should be level to +/-3mm with no local high spots over 1mm. The overall dimension of the slab should be 300mm greater than the nominal plan size of the tank (see detail C). An alternative method of support is to lay a 25mm thick layer of marine plywood on top of universal beams, positioned to coincide with the tank seams at 500mm centres.

All capacities are nominal, no allowance being made for freeboard. 3. To maximise the capacity from a tank, a ball valve box can be used to raise the invert of the inlet above the top of the tank.
