Codes and conventions of a film poster

•The poster aims to be appealing/eye catching.•To have a main picture that will be interesting and attract the target audience.•To display a large title that can be easily read.•Clearly displays the film genre.•Will attract the target audience.

The genre I have chosen for my film and ancillary products is ‘Horror.’ I will analyze film posters so that I can see what makes a good horror film poster.

This film poster is advertising the film 'Splinter.' I feel that this poster is very effective and straight away tells us that the genre of the film is horror as they have showed a disturbing image. The way that the producers have used the phrase 'it will get under your skin.' gets the audience involved in the poster and makes you feel lie you will be 'in' the film. The typography that the producers have used on the poster tells us straight away that the genre of the film is horror. The font colour is red and splattered like blood with small parts of the text missing, making it look like a murder scene. The colours that the producers have used work well with the poster. The way that the top of the poster is a light green, then gradually gets darker towards the bottom of the page, makes the poster look dark and scary which fulfills the genre of the film.

This poster is advertising the film 'Shrooms.' The film poster fulfills the codes and conventions of a horror poster by the colour choice used. The colours on the poster are dark and gloomy, straight away telling us that the genre of film is horror. The typography used by the producers also stereotypes horror films by the way that the producers have created and put the word 'Shrooms' in a white text with a shadowed background. In the background of the poster we can see the moon shining brightly onto the mushrooms, creating the image of a skull. This image shows us that the film is within the horror genre as it fits the repertoire of elements of a horror film (ghosts, ghouls etc.) The text at the bottom of the poster says 'get ready to get wasted.' This text is blunt and the way that they have used the word 'wasted' implies that death will be involved in the film.
