Celebrating Our Calling to Faith-Filled Stewardship

Our Members Make Our Mission Real THIS WEEKEND WE BEGIN a formal, organized stewardship renewal campaign within our parish community. About two years ago this kind of program successfully enabled us to stabilize our Sunday offertory income. (See the chart below.) Now we want to reinforce that achievement as well as make the effort to increase Sunday offerings. This will help us to balance our parish budget and in turn insure the future life and welfare of our parish.

I am most grateful— and often humbled—by the generosity of our parish members. Your giving— of yourself, your time, and your financial resources—makes our

mission real! And our being here makes Jesus Christ really present in this community.

The coming weeks will give us all many opportunities to deepen our understanding and practice of stewardship. Please join me as well in taking time for—

Prayers of Thanksgiving— Each of us and our whole parish community are blessed by God. And gratitude gives birth to generosity.

Prayers for Wisdom— Ask God for good judgment and peace of mind and heart as we all consider the meaning of “equal sacrifice, not equal giving”.

Tours & Open House OPEN HOUSE OFFERS students and their parents the chance to tour the Trinity Catholic High School campus and learn more about the Trinity Catholic community. Students and parents will lead the tours and also give prospective students and their families the opportunity to meet administrators, teachers, staff and parents. The Trinity Parent Organization (TPO) provides lunch to the visitors who will be able to learn more about Trinity Catholic in the areas of academics, extra-curricular activities, fine arts, athletics, etc.

Trinity's Open House will be held Sunday, November 8th, 2015 at Trinity from 12:00 pm—4:00 pm.

For more information about high school nights please call Kevin McKenna in the Advancement Office at 314-741-1333, ext: 223.

SHINGLES About one of every three people in the U.S. will develop shingles at some point. Of an estimated one million cases each year, about 1/2 of them occur in people over the age of 60. Half of the people that live to age 85 develop shingles. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection. This is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Singles can cause a painful rash anywhere on the body and usually appears as a single stripe of blisters that wrap around one side of the torso. Most people who receive treatment soon after the blisters appear will experience relief from pain and heal from the lesions within 3 to 5 weeks. What causes shingles? Anyone who has had chicken pox can get shingles, including children. The virus lies dormant, inactive, in nerve tissue near the spinal cord and the brain. If the virus reactivates, it can travel along nerve pathways to skin and cause shingles. The risk of shingles increases with age, which may be due to lowered immunity as we grow older. People with a greater risk are those with weaker immune systems. Shingles cannot be passed between people, but the virus can spread to people who are not immune to chicken pox. The virus usually spreads from person to person through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash when blisters are present. Once infected, the person will develop chicken pox, not shingles. If the rash is covered, the risk of spreading the virus low. However, chicken pox can be dangerous for some, including new-borns and pregnant women,. Until blisters turn into scabs a person is contagious and should avoid contact with those susceptible people. Remember to keep the rash covered, avoid scratching or touching the rash and wash hands often. If in doubt and over the age of 60, chick with a physician regarding receiving the Shingles vaccine. Have a wonderful week...and thank God for this beautiful season. S. Rose, SSND, RN

Twenty-Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time October 4, 2015

What the Catholic Church Teaches The scriptures for this weekend certainly lay the foundations for our Churches belief in and teachings about the sacrament of marriage and the indissolubility of marriage.

Jesus “flips” the conversation on the Pharisees by re-focusing their attention on the Law of Moses which actually protected women and established their freedom to remarry. The Law taught that men and women had a mutual duty to each other. Jesus then goes beyond the Law. God the Creator created male and female as interdependent, a teaching for couples, all disciples, and the whole community. No relationship on Earth is more valuable than that of those whom God has brought together.

As Catholics we should be especially proud of how well known we are for our beliefs

about marriage and for our care in helping couples to recognize that

God is calling them to marriage and to prepare well for this Sacrament.

Today’s readings also bring up the fact of divorce about which many Catholics have some misunderstanding. Hopefully these facts will be helpful for our parish members or others with whom you may choose to share them.

• Divorce is not always sinful. Can the decision to di-vorce be sinful? Yes. Anything that is done out of selfish-ness is always sinful. Divorce does belong on the list of options for what to do when a marriage is in trouble. How-ever, it should be at the bottom of the list, and should never be exercised as an option without a period of counseling and spiritual direction.

• A divorced person may receive communion. Very often a divorced person thinks or is even told that they may not belong to a parish, go to Mass, or even receive communion. This may be especially difficult for someone who now more than ever may need the support of a faith community and the sacraments. So if you are divorced or may know someone who is, please keep the following in mind:

• A divorced person who has not remarried may receive communion and may participate fully in the life,

ministries, and sacraments of the Church.

• A divorced person who has remarried without an annulment of their previous marriage (if required), may not receive communion and their freedom to participate in the life, ministr ies, and sacraments of

the Church may be limited.

Often divorce is a terribly difficult time in the life of a person or family. Priests, deacons, lay ministers of the Church, and all who are members should always strive to care for those who struggle emotionally, spiritually, and economically because of divorce. Divorced persons should never be marginalized, but rather should surely know that among us they will find the love of God and the care of Christ.

Holy Name of Jesus parishioner (and BN resident) Arthur Meinhardt will turn 100 years old later in October. He's faithfully in a front pew, right side, at 8:00 a.m. Sun-day mass.
