Ash Wednesday to Pentecost - Our 90 Day Journey of Faith
Parish Life – A Ministry of Mercy Our Catholic faith tradition is deeply rooted in Scripture and Tradition where our understanding of ‘mercy’ is defined and revealed to be ‘heartfelt compassion’. This is God’s constant attitude toward us and grace on our behalf. This is also the attitude and activity of the Church toward every person and place on Earth. Every generation is called to build upon the faith of every community of believers that has gone before them.
THE ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL begins in our parish this weekend. Join me in thanking and supporting our Parish Appeal Leaders, Sue Polis and Bruce & Ginny Saak. During the coming weeks, if they invite you to
volunteer to assist them in ways that will help to make the Appeal successful in our parish, please try to be generous with your time. As in all things the more we support and encourage one another the more we can achieve.
BE ONE / BE MORE! An Assembly of Parish Leaders will take place on Monday, May 1st at 7:00pm. This Assembly will review the viability of our parish for the coming year. Parish leaders will also consider whether or not we now need to begin to reorganize our parish using one of the two preferred alternative parish models selected in January 2016.
The purpose of this annual meeting is to develop recommendations that support sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish. You will find more information about this in today’s bulletin, including a list of our parish leaders. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to
contact any one of them before May 1st with your comments or ideas you would like to help plan and implement in our parish.
OCEAN OKOHSON-REB, a student of our Christ Light of the Nations School, has been selected as a finalist from our parish in the 2017 Respect Life Apostolate Creative Writing Contest. Over 1,000 8th grade students from every Catholic elementary school and Parish School of Religion of our Archdiocese submitted essays addressing the topics of chastity and abortion.
This contest allows students the opportunity to express their beliefs and their understanding of our Church’s teachings about chastity and respect for human life. The selection of essay and scholarship winners will be announced at an Awards Assembly on May 3rd at the Cardinal Rigali Center.
Join me in congratulating Ocean’s parents and the teachers of our school for their efforts to educate and form our youth about respect for God’s gift of life.
Tell Me Again … How Does The Annual Catholic Appeal Differ from Beyond Sunday
The ACA is an annual campaign in support of the Catholic ministries necessary to continue the day-to-day work of the Church—helping parishes, families, and individual people across our region with their immediate needs. The ACA and our Sunday Offertory collection are the ordinary ways our members support Church ministries and programs serving others in ways no one parish alone could accomplish.
The Beyond Sunday campaign is an extraordinary campaign to maintain and strengthen parishes and schools for future generations. Beyond Sunday supports long-term solutions that will —
• provide affordable, quality Catholic education for all students, and
• support our parish community.

O N E H E A R T I N C H A R I T Y
All contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal have already been designated for specific needs.
They are restricted for Education, Pastoral Programs, and Charitable Services and Ministries that assist parishes of the Archdiocese and many people throughout our community.
The Annual Catholic Appeal provides our Church with a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate our strength in solidarity. Together, we unite with all Catholics throughout the Archdiocese in a common mission of service. Your participation makes a powerful statement of support for all that is good about our Church and our parish.
When we give sacrificially to others, we create a stronger and more vibrant Catholic community. The good we must do, does not have to be an extraordinarily heroic act. In fact, our lives are made up of many small, simple acts of faith and charity. Your gift can be just that.
How Does The Appeal Benefit Our Parish?
Our Annual Catholic Appeal is rooted in our CATHOLIC TRADITION of mutual support and reaching out with generosity to those in need.
It is AN ACT OF FAITH on our part that the power of love is more powerful than any painful circumstance or difficulty in life.
It is AN ACT OF STEWARDSHIP, convincing evidence that there is a God who cares for people in their time of need.
In our parish we experience the benefit of this Appeal through—
the services of
Catholic Family Counseling,
the assistance programs of Catholic Charities,
the programs and support provided by Birthright Counseling,
the aid provided through our St. Vincent de Paul Society, and
the educational programs and religious formation for children offered by
Christ Light of the Nations School and Trinity Catholic High School.
All these ministries and services – and much more – are possible because of your generous support for the Appeal each year.
Last year alone our school received grants amounting to $295,000 from the Appeal made possible because of your support for the Annual Catholic Appeal.
What Are Our Goals for This Year?
The success of our effort to achieve the following goals depends on one thing alone – PRAYER.
Let us pray especially that God will help us to believe in the importance of what we are doing.
Let us pray that God will help us to know and experience the joy of giving as we see and hear more about how our generosity is a blessing on others.
We have THREE GOALS for our parish this year:
• To raise $57,529 in pledges and gifts
• To increase the level of participation in our parish.
If you have made a gift or pledge in previous years, we encourage you to recommit yourself to this year’s Appeal.
If you have never made a pledge or gift, we encourage you to do so this year. We have a goal of developing 47 new donors.
• To increase the amount contributed by each family or individual
participating in the Appeal by encouraging new donors and by reminding all donors that you can more
easily increase your gift by pledging your payments over several months or through the entire year.
What We’re Doing To Achieve in Our Goals!
During the coming weeks you will be receiving information about the Annual Catholic Appeal in the mail and through the St. Louis Review, our Archdiocesan newspaper. You will also be seeing and hearing about the ministries and services funded by the Appeal on television, radio, and outdoor advertising. We want our whole community to know about the good we are doing!
Our Catholic Church makes of big difference in this community!
In our parish –
Everyone will have an opportunity to make a pledge or gift in support of the Appeal before and after all weekend Masses in the Community Center or Vestibule of the Chapel of Our Lady —
Saturday/Sunday, April 22nd & 23rd Saturday/Sunday, April 29th & 30th
Saturday/Sunday, May 6th & 7th
This weekend Ms. Colleen Smyth will speak at Mass about the work of Catholic Charities, in particular, the Pathways to Progress Initiative soon expanding into our parish community — just one of the ways that so many people benefit from our generosity.
Finally, during the coming weeks a Video Presentation on the services and ministries made possible by the Appeal will be shown in the Community Center and the Chapel.

Our Future – Full of Hope An Assembly of Parish Leaders will take place on Monday, May 1st at 7:00pm. This Assembly will review the viability of our parish for the coming year. Parish leaders will also consider whether or not we now need to begin to reorganize our parish using one of the two preferred alternative parish models (below) selected in January 2016.
In March 2016 Archbishop Carlson’s greatest hope and concern was that the closing of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish and the continuing use of the parish church at that location should “promote a united vibrant parish community”.
As requested by the Archbishop parish leaders will evaluate his hope for outcome and will work toward recommendations and goals focused on sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish. They will utilize information gathered through recent surveys, interviews, and a parish assembly. They will need to consider –
• the roles and responsibilities of the pastor and parish staff;
• strategies for developing lay leaders and more volunteers for parish ministries, organizations, and activities;
• the financial stability of our parish that a balanced budget and planned capital improvements will help to achieve with on-going attention to:
• reasonable reductions in parish expenses and increased Sunday offerings, and the development of new revenue sources from capital fundraising, grants, and lease agreements with organizations and programs supporting our parish mission and the work of the Catholic Church in our parish; and
• the continuing use of the Chapel of Our Lady as a parish worship site.
O R G A N I Z I N G O U R P A R I S H L I F E F O R T H E F U T U R E
Based on the presumption that one full time priest would be available to serve our parish, in January 2016 parish leaders recommended these preferred ways of organizing our parish. Again presuming we will have one full time priest for the coming year, we must now review and decide on the best way to use our one full time priest and determine the model that will best support sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish.
Priest Pastor Model Our priest serves as Pastor of a vital and stable parish and is capable of pastoral leadership and administration, collaborative ministry, and community development, with the support of a committed staff and lay leaders to whom he can delegate authority and responsibility for the life and welfare of the parish.
Parish Twinning Model Our priest, with the support of well developed lay leadership, serves as Pastor of two or more parishes that are financially stable and whose members are capable of cooperating and depending on each other for most, if not all, parish ministries, organizations, and activities necessary for the life and welfare of each parish.
Parish Clustering Model Our priest serves with one or several other priests pastoring two or more parishes with a limited number of active parishioners; collaborating among themselves to share personnel, resources, and services; and striving to develop a close cooperative working relationship between Parish Councils and Finance Committees.
