Ash Wednesday to Pentecost - Our 90 Day Journey of Faith
We Are The Bread of Life JOIN WITH ME IN CONGRATULATING the children of our parish who are making their First Communion this weekend. With their families and teachers they have been looking forward to this day all year. I would especially invite our parishioners to take some time this weekend to remember and reflect on the experience of your own First Communion. Then think about its meaning and importance for you. Finally, in your own words pray for these children to experience and understand what you already know to be true about this central Sacrament of our Catholic Christian faith. Thank you for practicing your faith. It’s a great support for our children and their families.
BE ONE / BE MORE! An Assembly of Parish Leaders will take place on Monday, May 1st at 7:00pm. You’ll find more detailed information about this in today’s bulletin, including (to the right) a partial summary of the results of our recent viability survey.
Eternal Father, at the Last Supper your Son prayed
that all who bear His name might be one.
Send the Holy Spirit upon us to make us one in Christ.
Unite our service to our brothers and sisters.
And join us together as we build your Church in our midst.
Gospel of John the Evangelist 17: 20-21 Archbishop Carlson’s greatest concern is that closing of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish and the continuing use of the parish church at that location has “promoted a united vibrant parish community”. This meeting will focus on our parish’s viability for the future using these questions:
Are we a vital parish? Does our parish have sufficient staff, parish leaders, and volunteers to sustain the ministries, organization, and activities needed for our parish to accomplish the work of the Church in this part of North County?
Are we a stable parish? Does our parish practice good stewardship of our human, financial, and material resources?
Partial Summary of Results Parish Viability Survey
About a month ago through the parish bulletin we invited all parishioners to take and return this survey. Eighty (80) surveys were returned representing 16.5% of our average total weekend Mass attendance (486) and 4.6% of our total number of registered parishioners (1,728).
Of the respondents most interested in the five characteristics necessary for the viability of our parish, on average across all characteristics 33% are already now committed and encouraging others and 57% either want to or now participate in our parish for the sake of its viability. This represents 70 respondents, 4.1% of our registered parishioners.
For Catholics nationwide 80-90% of volunteering and giving is coming from only 7% parish members, with the majority coming from the Baby Boomer Generation. As this group ages, it will be replaced by the numerically smaller Generation X, who have a much smaller percentage currently practicing their faith.
It may also be important to note that our average total weekend Mass attendance (486) represents 28.1% of our total number of registered parishioners (1,728). Currently, Mass attendance in the United States is below 30%.
Many survey respondents also shared their experiences of parish life over the past 9 months. These have been compiled and sent to all parish leaders.

Baptism Empowers Us to be A Light to the Nations
Our Future – Full of Hope In March 2016 Archbishop Carlson’s greatest hope and concern was that the closing of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish and the continuing use of the parish church at that location should “promote a united vibrant parish community”.
On Monday, May 1st our parish leaders will meet -
• To review the viability of our parish for the coming year,
• To consider whether or not we now need to begin to reorganize our parish using one of the two preferred alternative parish models selected in January 2016 and described in last week’s bulletin, and
• To develop recommendations that support sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish.
We are presuming that our parish will have one full time priest for the coming year. The organizational models we have selected for our parish will help us to answer
these two questions: What is the best way to use our one full time priest? and Which model will best support sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish?
Parish leaders will evaluate Archbishop Carlson’s hoped for outcome and will work toward recommendations and goals focused on sustaining the long-term strength and unity of our parish. They will utilize information gathered through recent surveys, interviews, and a parish assembly and consider –
• the roles and responsibilities of the pastor and parish staff;
• strategies for developing lay leaders and more volunteers for parish ministries, organizations, and activities;
• the financial stability of our parish that a balanced budget and planned capital improvements will help to achieve with on-going attention to:
• reasonable reductions in parish expenses and increased Sunday offerings, and the development of new revenue sources from capital fundraising, grants, and lease agreements with organizations and programs supporting our parish mission and the work of the Catholic Church in our parish; and
• the continuing use of the Chapel of Our Lady as a parish worship site. Parish Balanced Budget Initiative
Adjusted Total Income
Our parish financial report for the first three quarters of this fiscal year show an
actual total income of $652,628. However, this number includes
extraordinary income that we cannot count on receiving every year.
Therefore, for purposes of tracking our progress toward a balanced parish
budget, our actual total income has been adjusted to $512,905.
These adjustments include an estate gift ($104,669.34), the remaining cash assets of
Our Lady of the Rosary Parish ($53,682.45); and the to-date
unexpended revenue previously allotted for Sister Rose’s position ($18,629).
Our goal is to have a balanced budget in place by July 1st, 2018.

The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry needs your help! We are in need of canned and dry foods (ie, canned soups & stews, macaroni & cheese, cereal, etc.; no glass containers, please).
If you are able to help, please deposit your canned and/or dry food items in the large St. Vincent de Paul containers located at all the church entrances at the Ashbrook site. Thank you in advance for your faithful generosity!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some monks and nuns trace their community origins back a thousand years or so, before it became customary to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in tabernacles. In their rules of life, which evolved from the lifestyle and prayer of their predecessors, the core experience of Christ’s presence is at the altar itself, and in the symbol of assembly for prayer. To this day, when the monks or nuns file into their church in procession, they march two by two, and then bow profoundly to the altar before turning and bowing in reverence toward the brother or sister at their side. It is probably more difficult, in practice, to revere the presence of Christ in a person who irks you by taking the car keys, shirking a work duty, or burning the toast! We can trace in these religious orders’ enduring customs the ancient appreciation for the altar as the center of the church building, and of the community of the faithful as the Body of Christ. Usually, a monas-tery today will reserve the Blessed Sacrament in some quiet corner of the monastic church, in a fairly small space, more suitable for private prayer than for the gathering of the whole community. In a cloister, the architecture may allow the public limited access to this space. Liturgical law tells us, in both monasteries and parish churches, that there is no need for more than a few hosts in the place of reservation, just enough for viaticum, the “food for the journey” that is the final
